Drakenstein Paarl - South Africa Travel Channel 24
Only 56km from Cape Town, Paarl offers historical charm, culture, architectural heritage, wine and fruit farms, breathtaking scenery and many cycling and nature trails. The magnificent countryside, good wines and friendly people welcome you to a town where a feeling of tranquility still transcends modern day living.
Paarl offers many attractions - from visits to the Afrikaans Language Monument, the youngest language in the world and Paarl Mountain, with its rocks which are remains of granites which rose and broke through slate and sandstone formations about 500 million years ago, to sampling some local olive oil.
Opening in late 2008, the first phase of Paarl's exciting new heritage tourism venue, De Poort Heritage Village, is almost complete. Visitors can observe heritage artisans; see a forge in operation; try out the skill of the blacksmith and watch a cooper or farrier. The Drakenstein Heemkring archive is housed in De Oude Woning in Paarl. The collection includes valuable manuscripts, photographs, books, genealogical records and research on original Huguenot farms.

Took my drone up to Paarl Rock for some Arial shots. Paarl Rock is the bulbous granite outcrop that is part of the larger Paarl Mountain, standing out from miles away for its smooth, flawless appearance, from where it gets its name.

PAARL – AN INTRODUCTION
The scenic beauty of Paarl compels visitors to explore the many cultural and historical attractions in the Drakenstein Valley, together with some of the most bountiful nature reserves in the surrounding mountains.
Paarl takes its name from the huge granite outcrop that stands proudly on the crest of Paarl Mountain. The town was founded in 1687, is the third oldest settlement in South Africa and has a rich cultural and historical heritage.
The birth of Afrikaans as the world’s youngest language is celebrated by the iconic Afrikaans Language Monument that stands prominently on the southern slopes of Paarl Mountain.
The town has many fine examples of Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and Cape Dutch buildings that compete for space with a wide variety of fine restaurants and coffee shops spread out along the twelve kilometre-long Main Street.

Paarl Mountain & Rock Hike - Things to do in the Cape Town Winelands
Is hiking in Paarl mountain better than hiking up Table Mountain.
Well the answer is always YES & NO.
Paarl Mountain is easy access and has nearly no tourists.
Nothing like Table Mountain that can take 2-3 hours to hike up because of the amount of tourists, yes its iconic and we are not saying don't hike up Table Mountain .
What we are saying is hike Paarl Rock, its any easy hike has great views and is easy for the whole family.
If you are the people who try and stay away from the crowds then we definitely recommend this hike in Cape Town, bring a picnic basket and hangout in the beautiful gardens.
Travelvids joined up with the Cape Town Twins to tackle a Paarl Rock hike in the Rain.
It's an easy hike to and from the peak of this massive boulder, but its slippery when wet.
Besides this Monster Rock we explored the Paarl Taal Monument which stands to honour the Afrikaans language. Afrikaans is the youngest language on earth BTW.
Then we also popped into the Meulwater Botanical Gardens.... the sun popped out to play for some radically cool flower Macro shots including the King Protea.
