Fishing BC Presents: Vancouver Fishing Charters with Pacific Angler
From urban culture to the wilds of the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver has it all ‘Like stepping back in time’
The beauty of B.C. is that few places are far from the ocean and salmon. Vancouver is no different, and visitors to the province’s largest city have the chance to experience the best of urban culture and wild sport fishing in a one-stop destination.
Jason Tonelli developed his love for fishing with his family — his grandfather taught him to fish for trout on B.C.’s interior lakes — and his business is a family experience as well. He operates Pacific Angler with others in his family, including his sister. His team of guides also becomes part of the family, making the experience of going to work more vacation than chore.
His boats and guides prowl the straights and islands off the southern coast, connecting anglers to the millions of migrating salmon that pass by en route to the rivers of their birth.
“Within five to 25 minutes of leaving the City of Vancouver, it’s like stepping back in time. What a great place to carry out the passion of fishing,” he says.

Fishing BC Presents: Port Hardy with Tides and Tales Sport Fishing Adventures
There’s few places on the West Coast that can put an angler onto fighting salmon just seven minutes from the dock.
That’s the allure of Port Hardy, a small community tucked into a deep inlet on the north coast of Vancouver Island. This is the last stop on Highway 19 and the wildness is apparent. Diving eagles and breaching whales blend with old-growth forests and steep rocky shores to paint an unbelievable picture of nature at its best.
For Mike Kelly, the owner of Tides and Tales, the allure of the place is also about its variety.
“You leave the dock early in the morning and head out into Queen Charlotte Straight, and that’s where the predictions end. Every day is totally different,” he says. “It’s the variety that keeps me coming back.”
From salmon to halibut, the opportunities to connect with wild fish abound.
“This really is a fish highway,” he says. “It’s one of the best salmon fishing spots on the West Coast.”

Catching Giant Chinook Salmon in Beautiful Vancouver — Barstool Outdoors Ep. 6
Flew Across the Country to Catch This Fish — Barstool Outdoors Ep. 6
I flew across the country, from New York to Vancouver, to catch a chinook salmon in the beautiful Vancouver Bay.
Salmon are a fish of great cultural importance. They have been a huge part of the culture in the Northwest for a long time and their life cycle sustains animals from so many different backgrounds. We arrived in beautiful Vancouver BC and set off to the dock which was literally right in the middle of downtown.
Captain Derek Puri of Pacific Angler Sportfishing greeted us with a smile but with bad news. No matter what the conditions, he agreed to try and make it happen. We idled out as two other boats from the same charter company were returning after barely running and turning around. I started to wonder if maybe this was a questionable choice, but since we only had one day here, I was down for whatever.
The water was pretty big, especially for Vancouver harbor, but we eventually got to the spot alive and fished in peace while we only saw one other boat the entire day. The fishing was definitely much different than what I was used to. We were trolling along using mooching reels and found our way to some gorgeous Salmon. They fought so hard and had a gorgeous coloration that I will never forget. It doesn’t hurt that there were absolutely stunning mountains in every direction and Bald Eagles flying through the air. BC is truly heaven on Earth.
Fishing BC Presents: Exploring BC's Central Coast with Shearwater Resort
The sheltered waters on British Columbia’s Central Coast near Shearwater Resort are a highway for Pacific salmon. All five species of salmon are found migrating through the numerous passageways formed by a bounty of small islands along the coast, creating prime structure for schooling baitfish and their predators alike.
Shearwater is a gateway into the Great Bear Rainforest, one of British Columbia’s most renowned ecosystems. Bears, wolves, eagles, humpback whales, orcas and much more call this beautiful area home.
Not only does this provide ample opportunity for eco-tourism, but adds a unique dynamic to Shearwater’s fishing program. It is easy to get lost in the surrounding beauty of this untouched coastline.
Shearwater and the Great Bear Rainforest are dripping with both history and authenticity; a true mark of what saltwater fishing on British Columbia’s Central Coast is all about.
