Fishing BC Presents: Vancouver Fishing Charters with Pacific Angler
From urban culture to the wilds of the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver has it all ‘Like stepping back in time’
The beauty of B.C. is that few places are far from the ocean and salmon. Vancouver is no different, and visitors to the province’s largest city have the chance to experience the best of urban culture and wild sport fishing in a one-stop destination.
Jason Tonelli developed his love for fishing with his family — his grandfather taught him to fish for trout on B.C.’s interior lakes — and his business is a family experience as well. He operates Pacific Angler with others in his family, including his sister. His team of guides also becomes part of the family, making the experience of going to work more vacation than chore.
His boats and guides prowl the straights and islands off the southern coast, connecting anglers to the millions of migrating salmon that pass by en route to the rivers of their birth.
“Within five to 25 minutes of leaving the City of Vancouver, it’s like stepping back in time. What a great place to carry out the passion of fishing,” he says.

Saving Wild Salmon in British Columbia's Pacific Northwest
- Saving salmon in British Columbia's Pacific North West is a mission that local residents are incredibly enthusiastic about. Learn how they nurtured 80,000 baby Chinook salmon in a race against time to save an endangered spawning river, located in Quatsino on Vancouver island. British Columbia's salmon farmers stepped in to provide technical support, food and equipment so the volunteers could get the job done, in part 1 of 2 in this series - Born to Be Wild.

Fishing BC Presents: Salmon Fishing with Squid in Ucluelet
A highway for Pacific salmon and a thriving fishery for Halibut and bottom fish, Ucluelet offers a remarkable fishery on British Columbia’s Pacific Rim. Bill von Brendel has a different paradigm than most when it comes to saltwater fishing for the multitude of species swimming off the coast of Ucluelet, using productive techniques such as fishing live squid for salmon and swimbaits for bottom fish.
“Not many people know how to squid fish”, says Bill as a live squid is immersed in a bucket of clean water. “It doesn’t happen all the time, on a 6 to 8 year cycle the squid come in thick and the salmon follow.”
Bill also displays light tackle fishing with swimbaits as his preferred method for targeting bottom species. “There’s a lot of different species, you never know what you’re going to get” Bill describes his swimbait techniques as more sporting and interactive than traditional methods. Fishing aside, it is the beauty of Ucluelet that attracts so many to this area.
“How could you ever get sick of a place like this, even after decades?”
