Driving Our ATV In Santa Teresa Costa Rica - Quad Riding
Driving an ATV in Costa Rca Is super fun!
There are ATV tours you can book and explore roads you would normally not come.
Or really going offroad... The ATV will get you there.
When you live in Costa Rica, like we do I can really recommend you to buy an ATV, even if you have a car.
Cars break down regularly because of the condition of the roads here in Santa Teresa.
This also counts for a lot of other parts in Costa Rica.
An ATV or Quad as we call them in Europe are made for the rough roads of Santa teresa on the peninsula of Costa Rica.
In this video I share one big tip that you should not forget when you ride an ATV inCota Rica or any where else in the world :-)

Santa Teresa Beach - Golfo de Nicoya
Santa Teresa is a booming travel destination in Costa Rica which attracts especially surfers and the younger crowds to its scenic beaches and great surf.
A broad strip of forest lines the beach of Santa Teresa and as there are no high-rise buildings the coastline still looks pristine, backed by jungle covered hills and with a long sweep of white sand beach washed by the pacific surf.
Behind the beach forest Santa Teresa's main drag extends parallel to the coast along a potholed and dusty dirt road. The last years the village has seen a huge spike in devolopment and constructions now spread up the hills inland from the coast. Many tourists who had just been on a surf vacation in Costa Rica got hooked and made Santa Teresa their new home. The cross-cultural residents created a multitude of new restaurants and hotels in Santa Teresa, with lodging options ranging from low-key surf hostels to some of the most luxurious boutique hotels in Costa Rica.
For most people surfing is the main pursuit and many visitors receive their first surf lessons in Santa Teresa. Apart from challenging waves for the experts there are also the easy-going breaks of Playa Carmen for novice surfers. Many hotels offer surf instructions and surf camps in Santa Teresa for all ages and levels of experience. See: » Surf in Santa Teresa and Mal Pais
There is however still more to do than surfing. Playa Santa Teresa and Playa Carmen rank among the most beautiful beaches of Costa Rica and you can make long hikes along the picturesque coastline, bathe in tide pools or find a nice place under a palm tree for loafing and reading your book. See » The Beaches of Santa Teresa.
For venturing a bit farther along the shoreline or into the country side you can make a tour on horseback, or rent an ATV to check out nearby attractions like the waterfalls in Montezuma. Nature lovers should not miss a visit of Cabo Blanco, Costa Rica's oldest Nature Reserve.
Many activities are available in the neighboring community of Mal Pais where you can embark from the small fishing port on a tour by boat around Cabo Blanco for snorkeling, fishing or watching whales, manta rays and sea turtles. Another tour option is SUP paddling along the coast of Mal Pais, or zip through the treetops next to the Cabo Blanco reserve on the Mal Pais Canopy Tour. And of course you can always do yoga, which is offered by several hotels in Santa Teresa.
When it comes time for Santa Teresa's spectacular sunsets over the Pacific Ocean, everyone seems to gather at the beach to enjoy the cool breezes, while watching the surfers and making plans for the evening. Santa Teresa offers plenty of nightlife, especially during high season, from January to March, and even more so over the Christmas holidays. A Baile in the local dancehall La Lora often features a life Costa Rican band where you can dance Salsa and Cumbia. Or hit Santa Teresa's other nightspots with international DJ's spinning electronic dance music.

Santa Teresa, Costa Rica- Surfer's Paradise
A bit off of Costa Rica's tourist super highway is the quiet and still-undisturbed beach of Santa Teresa. Near the tip of the Pacific's Nicoya Peninsula, Santa Teresa is not completely off the radar -- it won Best Beach in Central America for 2012 and Top 10 in the World for 2011 in Trip Advisor's Traveler's Choice Awards. Nonetheless, Santa Teresa retains its charm as a small fishing village and intimate collection of international boutique hotels and vacation homes. for more info and to find out more about amazing retreats in Santa Teresa, visit foodloversretreats.com

Driving Down Route 160 in Costa Rica (The Impossible Road)
We wanted to drive from Tamarindo to Playa Mal Pais and the only route is an inland highway taking about 2 1/2 hours - that's the recommended way to go and the only one that shows up on Google Maps or on GPSs ... but where's the fun in that?
Route 160 is 200km of dirt road that hugs the Pacific coastline of the Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica.
Unfortunately, the road is not really a road. There are a lot of points blocked off by crocodile infested rivers that simply don't have a bridge or a way to cross. We were told by locals and longterm American visitors that it can't really be driven, and that all the time people try and end up abandoning their cars .... but I think that just made us want to do it more.
We drove the Route 160 the entire way to the Southern most tip of the Nicoya; along the coast and up into the mountains, stopping briefly along the way to navigate around wild fires burning up in the jungle due to the dry season, the tires precariously dangling inches (not feet) from 400 foot vertical drop cliff edges, a couple wrong turns, a quick stop to check out some grunting howler monkeys, dogs chasing our car, plenty of other wildlife crossings with some near misses, getting stuck behind trucks, busses, scooters, ATVs and pickup trucks filled with live chickens and of course the croc infested river crossings in our rented Toyota Rav4 which we paid a lot of money to insure so we could mess it up as much as we wanted.
The trip took about 4 1/2 hours and we just made it before sundown (which would have stopped us dead in our tracks, the road could not be driven after dark).
It was well worth the time and the risk as we got to see parts of the country side barely any 'tourists' get to see and it gave us bragging rights to all the people we met along our trip. And people were genuinely impressed, some didn't even believe us.
Here is a time lapse of the journey.
Enjoy!
