America's West Coast by Train | Amtrak Pacific Surfliner | Business Class | San Diego - Los Angeles
In this travelmentary or trip report I review Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner on my trip from San Diego (Santa Fe Depot) to Los Angeles (Union Station). I booked a business class ticket and filmed my travel experience in California. Business Class can be seen as First Class - it‘s the highest booking class on this train.

Amtrak California (reporting mark CDTX) is a brand name used by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Division of Rail on three state-supported Amtrak rail routes within the US State of California, the Capitol Corridor, the Pacific Surfliner, and the San Joaquin.
It also includes an extensive network of Thruway Motorcoach bus connections, operated by private companies under contract. The three lines shared the use of Amtrak California branded Thruway buses and trainsets.
The National Railroad Passenger Corporation (Amtrak) assumed operation of almost all intercity passenger rail in the United States in 1971. Service in California, as in most of the United States, was basic and infrequent. In 1976 California began providing financial assistance to Amtrak.
At the same time, Caltrans Division of Rail was formed to oversee state-financed rail operations and the brand Amtrak California started appearing on state-supported routes.
In 1990, California passed Propositions 108 and 116, providing $3 billion for transportation projects ($5.6 billion after inflation), with a large portion going to rail service. As a result, new locomotives and passenger cars were purchased by the state, and existing inter-city routes expanded.
A more distinct image for Amtrak California, such as painting locomotives and passenger cars in California Color of blue and yellow, was established with the arrival of new rolling stock.
In 1998, while still funded by the state, the management of the Capitol Corridor was transferred to the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority (CCJPA), formed by local jurisdictions of the line serves. In 2015 the management of the San Joaquin and the Pacific Surfliner were similarly transferred to the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority (SJJPA) and the Los Angeles-San Diego-San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency (LOSSAN), respectively. As a result, the Amtrak California brand become less prominent in the websites and marketing materials.

Los Angeles Union Station (LAUS) is the main railway station in Los Angeles, California, and the largest railroad passenger terminal in the Western United States. Union Station is located on the original site of the Tongva village of Yaanga, which was believed to have been the largest of the Tongva villages. It opened in May 1939 as the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal, replacing La Grande Station and Central Station, and celebrated its 80th birthday in 2019.
Approved in a controversial ballot measure in 1926 and built in the 1930s, it served to consolidate rail services from the Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific Railroads into one terminal station. Conceived on a grand scale, Union Station became known as the Last of the Great Railway Stations built in the United States. The structure combines Art Deco, Mission Revival, and Streamline Moderne style. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Today, the station is a major transportation hub for Southern California, serving almost 110,000 passengers a day. It is Amtrak's fifth-busiest station, and by far the busiest in the Western United States and the tenth-busiest in the entire country. Four of Amtrak's long-distance trains originate and terminate here: the Coast Starlight to Seattle, the Southwest Chief and Texas Eagle to Chicago, and the Sunset Limited to New Orleans. The state-supported Amtrak California Pacific Surfliner regional trains run frequently to San Diego and also to Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. The station is the hub of the Metrolink commuter trains, and several Metro Rail subway and light rail lines serve it as well, with more in construction or planning.
The Patsaouras Transit Plaza, on the east side of the station, serves dozens of bus lines operated by Metro and several other municipal carriers.

The Southern California Coast shot by Tampa Aerial Media
We feature Pacific Beach, Torrey Pines Golf Course, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, and Santa Barbara in this video of the Southern California Coast.
Pacific Beach in San Diego is bordered by La Jolla to the north, and Mission Bay to the south. The boardwalk, a pedestrian walkway that runs approximately 3.2 miles along the beach from the end of Law St. in the north down into Mission Beach. There are numerous local shops, bars, hotels, and restaurants along the boardwalk, and it is generally crowded with pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers, and shoppers. For more info see
A fly over Torrey Pines Golf Course provides an amazing view of the rich greens overlooking the rocky cliffs of the Pacific Ocean.
Newport Beach, is known for its large, boat-filled harbor as you see on this video. It has become a popular tourist destination with its wine tastings and sunset crusises. For more info see
Huntington Beach located in Orange County is known for its long 9.5-mile stretch of sandy beach, mild climate, excellent surfing, and beach culture. The ocean waves are enhanced by a natural effect caused by the edge-diffraction of open ocean swells around Santa Catalina Island. Swells generated predominantly from the North Pacific in winter and from a combination of Southern Hemisphere storms and hurricanes in the summer focus on Huntington Beach, creating consistent surf all year long.
Santa Barbara is a city on the central California coast, with the Santa Ynez Mountains as dramatic backdrop. Downtown, Mediterranean-style white stucco buildings with red-tile roofs reflect the city’s Spanish colonial heritage.

I rode the train in California from Orange County to San Diego County
Amtrak Coast Starlight, in a Sleeper Car Bedroom
The overnight 14 Coast Starlight (Amtrak) from Los Angeles to Seattle.
--3 states
--1,377 miles
--36 hours
--29 stops (a few afford a chance for some fresh air, for a few minutes)
--incalculable jaw drops at the beauty seen from along the ocean coastline to the snowy mountain ranges and backdoor views of towns and cities.
I can't recommend this enough! What an experience! What a way to see the country! The whole ride was smooth, quiet, and tranquil. Whether you enjoy a book in the glass-domed car while sipping on some coffee, or nurse a beer through the passing majesty outside your window, you are rocked gently into a relaxation that is unlike any other. The staff was ever ready to accommodate needs and/or wants. Guest speakers rode along, regaling passengers with tales of the flora, fauna, and history of the areas. Fellow passengers were in equal states of awe and wonder, evidenced by the acknowledging head tilts complete with twinkling eyes and hearty grins. Childhood fancy was stirred together with an aged appreciation and I found that though we were moving northward, time had stood still.
Note: Yes...I have since learned to refrain from filming in portrait mode, when using a phone. ????
Note: Thank you, all, who have clarified that it's a Lounge Car featured in this video, not an actual Parlour Car. I did not intend to mislead anyone; during our ride, the staff and fellow passengers were calling it the Parlour Car, and I was at fault for following the flock in my understanding. Our train's Parlour Car must have been undergoing maintenance, at the time. I did find, however, the Lounge Car to be quite enjoyable. Nevertheless, I imagine riding with an official Parlour Car would enhance the experience, greatly. Thank you all, for clarifying this, for me and for others.
Note: for mobile device viewers, annotations don't appear on-screen. At the 2:28 mark, it should be noted that There is a traditional door on this bathroom; it's just not visible, here.

Evening Rush Hour at Los Angeles Union Station - Endless Metrolink & Amtrak Trains
In the begining of November, I hopped aboard Metrolink and headed up to the Los Angeles area for the day. Towards the end of the day, around 2 hours before my train departed, I hung around Union Station for some rush hour Metrolink and Amtrak trains. During the 2 hours I was there, over 20 trains arrived and departed from the 13 tracks that Union Station offers.
Usually refered to as the last of the great railway stations built in the United States, Union Station still stands after 77 years. Opened to the public on May 3, 1939, this place sure has seen many trains and changes over the years. In its heyday, passenger service was provided by the Santa Fe Railway, Southern Pacific Railroad, Union Pacific Railroad, as well as the Pacific Electric Railway and Los Angeles Railway.
Today Metrolink, Metro Rail, and various local and long distance Amtrak trains call Union Station home. Destinations can be as close as Glendale, as far as Chicago, or anywhere inbetween.
Caught typical Metrolink and Amtrak action there, including RBRX 18520 and RBRX 18522 on different Metrolink trains. BNSF and Metrolink's PTC test train was also parked on the far east tracks of the station, waiting for the evening rush hour to end. Busy place to be at this time of day, that's for sure!
Thanks for Watching! Watch in HD, 60 FPS!

Amtrak's Last Great Dome Car Travels The Pacific Surfliner - New Year's Day 2018
This is Amtrak's very last vintage ‘Great Dome’ car. Built in 1955 by the Budd Company, for the Great Northern Railway's 'Empire Builder' service, this vintage car was refurbished by Amtrak in 1985, and more recently in 1999. The Great Dome car now tours various Amtrak routes around the United States, including the Pacific Surfliner along the California coast. With it’s large Vista View windows, the Great Dome Car is perfect for taking in the beautiful coastal views and California sunshine - nothing beats traveling by train!
In this video, Big Engineer celebrates New Year's Day 2018 with a ride on this fascinating piece of classic American rolling stock. Traveling from San Diego to Oceanside California, BigEngineer enjoys the beach and ocean views, while also passing through rolling hills, rock canyons, and wet lagoons.

Trains in San Diego, California (Pacific Surfliner, Coaster, Trolley)
This short film shows the different types of trains that are present in San Diego, California.
The Pacific Surfliner is a train line operated by Amtrak between San Diego and San Luis Obispo. The Coaster is a local commuter rail line (yet served by gigantic rolling stock) running between San Diego and Oceanside. Finally, the San Diego Trolley is a light rail tram system serving San Diego and its suburbs.
This film briefly shows all three types of transport. Note that the last scenes at San Ysidro are filmed directly by the United States–Mexican border.
I will soon upload a longer film dedicated to the tram.
Index to the film:

Taking public city bus from San Diego Airport to downtown train & trolley stations
HOW TO REACH DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION HUBS FROM THE SAN DIEGO AIRPORT
• Follow the signs inside the airport to Ground Transportation.
• At the curb outside the airport, look for the bus stop sign for MTS bus 992. As of 2015 bus ticket purchase is $2.25 fare payable on board. Exact change needed. info
• Depart the bus at the Santa Fe Depot Station stop. Then walk North across Broadway across the trolley tracks just west of Kettner Blvd. You’ll see the Santa Fe Depot station from the bus stop.
Once at the Depot you have the choice to:
1. Purchase a COASTER ticket at the NCTD ticket vending machine on the platform.
2. Purchase tickets for Amtrak inside the depot ticket counter
3. Walk to adjacent American Plaza Station and purchase tickets for the San Diego Trolley, an inexpensive light rail service with three lines that serve multiple areas including Downtown, the Convention Center, SDSU, Old Town, and even the Mexican border. Although the trolley doesn’t stop directly at the airport, the blue and orange lines connect with MTS Bus route 992 at America Plaza Station adjacent to Santa Fe Depot
4. Uber, taxi, bus or walk to your San Diego area destination
