San Jose Vacation Travel Video Guide
Vacation Travel Video Guide about the destination San Jose.
The capital of Costa Rica, San José not only boasts an idyllic location in the heart of Central American’s coffee country, but also an enviable climate, and is a prosperous and vibrant metropolis. The Avenida Secunda is the name of the main artery that runs through its centre, a wide road usually crammed with taxis and buses. At first glance the city is anything but beautiful. Noisy, smelly, and the hectic traffic travcls threateningly along its streets and alleys making it a serious challenge for those pedestrians who dare to cross the road. However, a glimpse beyond San José’s chaotic façade soon reveals its inescapable charm. The more that the coffee producers from the surrounding slopes prospered, the more the city blossomed bringing parks, squares, mansions and magnificent buildings, including the attractive Edificio Metalico, a building that consists entirely of prefabricated metal parts. The items were made in Belgium, shipped to Costa Rica and then welded together in 1892. Music and dance are to be found throughout Costa Rica and in song and dance the South American temperament is plain to see. The music of the Central American countries is strongly influenced by a native African xylophone-like instrument, the marimba, along with punchy brass and lively rhythms. San José has a relatively short but turbulent history, punctured by several devastating earthquakes, but its irresistible charm lives on!

Costa Rica Pt 3 - Pacific Coast Beach Day & Casados at a Soda
Part 3 of our Costa Rica Travel Series.
For our third day in Costa Rica we decided to leave rainforest the interior of the country and head west on a road trip towards the Pacific Coast.
... For a much easier read, check out my full blog post here: ...
This not only rewarded us with a fun beach day, but it also gave us a great excuse to get out of the resort area and explore the rest what the country had to offer. After an early rise, we grabbed some sunscreen, a few towels, and hopped in our rental car for a cruise through Central America.
Itinerary for Day 3
Wake up around five thirty and admire the bright, tropical skies.
Skip breakfast, in the sake of time, and hope to find something along the way.
Hop in the rental car and head southwest from our hotel at the La Paz Waterfall Resort (about an hour north of San Jose)
Attempt to find a ATM / cash machine at a couple gas station and stores.
Fail at finding an ATM while slowly realizing that they aren’t very widespread in Costa Rica compared to Europe or the U.S. Oops.
Grab some oatmeal cookies and yogurt for breakfast at a small grocery store. They weren’t aware of any ATM’s nearby, but they did take Visa.
After some bumpy surface roads (quite barron of ATM’s I might add) we suddenly found ourselves at the entrance to the toll highway. To our relief and surprise, they happily took credit cards. Pretty cool, considering most tolls in the U.S. won’t even do that. They’ll also take American, although I would recommend avoiding that. We did that once at another toll, and realized later that the conversion the clerk gave us was waaay off. Probably an accident, but we learned our lesson a paid more attention on subsequent tolls.
Continue to drive through the mountains and towards the Pacific coast. In terms of general direction, the largest town near where we were head was the popular beach town of Jaco, although our actual goal was a white sand beach called Playa Blanca, 30 minutes north of Jaco.
Find some glorious ATM’s at a strip mall not too far from our destination and withdrawal some Costa Rican Colones. Finally, success for the unprepared travelers!
Grab some snacks and sandwiches lunch from the Supermarket at the strip mall for our upcoming beach picnic.
Arrive at the small parking lot at Playa Mantas This was a beautiful grey sand beach with calm waters, due to it’s cove shape. It wasn’t, however, our ultimate destination. By parking here, we were able to do a short walk and a slight climb over an embankment. This lead us to Playa Blanca, which is otherwise inaccessible, due to a resort blocking it from road access. Fret not though, all Costa Rican beaches are public land, so once you’ve made it over the embankment you’re all set to relax and enjoy the Costa Rican breeze. For detailed instructions on visiting yourself, check out this blog post that we found and used to get there ourselves.
Say hello to the friendly “security guard”. We knew in advance that we would need to pay to park here, although unofficially (around $3-$5 USD from what we read). I’ve read reports that people had to pay upon arrival, but we were told that there was no payment required, but we may “tip when we left” if we desired. Wink, wink.
Have an amazing Costa Rican Pacific coast beach picnic and afternoon of relaxation.
Tip our friendly security specialist $2,000 colones (which was around $4 USD at the time) on the way out. Seriously, though – he was quite friendly. I don’t want to know what happens if you don’t tip him though…
Head back in the direction of San Jose.
Stop for dinner at Soda el Guacimo, outside the town of Tarcoles, on the way home. Soda’s are small, family owned restaurants with delicious traditional Costa Rican food at great prices (because this is what the locals actually eat). This particular soda was had an open air layout (as many sodas do), friendly staff, delicious food and an amazing view.
Dine on some tasty food. I had casado de bistek (beef) and Sara had casado con pollo (chicken). Casados are a traditional Costa Rican dish consisting of rice, black beans, plantains, salad, a tortilla, and often a protein as well.
Drive back home to our hotel for a nightcap of Cafe Rica (Costa Rican coffee liquor)
Stay tuned for Part 4 where we visit a local farm for a hearty Costa Rican breakfast & return to San Jose for a reluctant flight home.

Travel video about destination Costa Rica.
Costa Rica is a fascinating country in Central America bordered by Nicaragua and Panama, a natural paradise between the Caribbean and the Pacific.Located at more than a thousand metres above sea level, San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, not only boasts an idyllic location in the heart of Central America’s coffee country, but also an enviable climate. The extent to which Costa Rica joins with European tradition can be seen in the Teatro Nacional. The coffee barons, to whom the glorious development of San José is owed, created taxes for the export of coffee beans and thus funded the construction of the magnificent building. In a fertile mountain valley at the foot of a volcano, is Turrialba, a town that radiates a serene calm but once was an important station on the route of the Jungle Train from San José to the Atlantic coast. The crater of the Poas Volcano is surrounded by the dense green of a rainforest and overlooks the north western Meseta Central. Although it is one of the country’s most active volcanoes, it is the most visited, as visitors can go by car almost to the edge of the crater. The Rain Forest Aerial Tram is Costa Rica’s most popular tourist attraction, a ride on an open gondola through the jungle. A journey of discovery amid a canopy of trees, hovering at treetop level through the solitude of nature. Fascinating nature, joie de vivre and colonial history are omnipresent on this land bridge between North and South America, Costa Rica is surely one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Wilderness Travel’s “Costa Rica Adventure” is a seven-day trip beginning and ending in the capital city, San Jose. It is an ideal tour for adventurous nature-lovers, combining energetic activities like sea kayaking, hiking volcanoes and zip line canopy tours with naturalist-led wildlife-viewing excursions. The first destination after San Jose is the Nectandra Cloud Forest, a biological preserve, then it’s on to Arenal Volcano National Park. On the fourth day, head for Manuel Antonio National Park and stop off for a canopy zip line tour along the way. At the park, hike through the forest to the beach, and check out monkeys, iguanas and colorful birds. In the evening, enjoy a sunset catamaran ride. Also, an extra one- or two-day white water rafting extension is available.

Stay in a private reserve near Ballena Marine National Park and enjoy snorkeling, hiking, swimming or spotting whales and dolphins. Days seven-to-nine are spent exploring the isolated tropical rainforest of the Osa Peninsula and the town of Palmar Sur, and kayaking among the mangroves of the Gulfo Dulce. On day 10, head for Drake Bay to take a boat ride; stop by Manuel Antonio National Park; then lodge near Carara National Park for two nights. The remainder of the tour is spent around Arenal Volcano, where you may soak in the hot springs and hike, then return to San Jose for departure. Costa Rica Scenery And Crocodile Bridge - San Jose to Manuel Antonio
On my last trip to Costa Rica, we drove from San Jose to Manuel Antonio. The drive takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and the scenery and views along the way are truly beautiful. As you get closer to the Pacific Coast there is a bridge referred to as 'Crocodile Bridge' or 'Croc Bridge' and it is over the Tarcoles River. The crocodiles gather here in large numbers and people from around the world stop and walk out to the center of the bridge to observe them down below. After you cross the bridge, you make your way to Jaco, which is a small beach town. Continue on for about another 30 minutes and you arrive in Quepos, Manuel Antonio which is truly spectacular.
