Snorkelling at Padangbai, Bali
Recently we spent the day snorkelling in the blue, clear waters off Padangbai in Bali, Indonesia. We found ourselves surrounded by 100s of colourful fish who were only too happy to say hello - especially when we were offering then slices of bread to munch on.
It was all going so well until one rather large local - that we'll affectionately call ' Jaws' - showed up and shook things up a little.
( Jaws makes his entrance at the 0520 mark)
It was an amazing day. It truly felt like we were inside a massive aquarium and it was one of the many highlights of our trip to Bali and Lombok, Indonesia.

The east of Bali is mainly known for the US Liberty, a war II wreck that lies close to Tulamben. But this is by far not the only thing to be see here. There are many rare animals living in the small reefs and sandy areas close to the wreck. The excellent diving in this area makes it well worth an extended visit, specially for photographers interested in critter diving. Further south around Amuk Bay are several dive sites, very varied, from easy diving on a slope to current swept islands like Gili Selang, Gili Biaha or Tepekong with a good chance to see sharks, Mola Mola sunfishes and other really large animals!

Dive Site:
Padangbai, Blue Lagoon.
Blue Lagoon is most people's favorite dive site in Padang Bai. You dive around a shallow white sand lagoon with a variety of corals and reef fish. Turtles, Cuttlefish, octopus, Crocodile fish and baby White or Black tip reef sharks are sometimes seen here. The shallow depth makes this site enjoyable by snorkelers. The visibility is usually good, depending on conditions. The waters here are sometimes warm, sometimes very cold (low 20's C / 70F). This is a shallow dive, with the best corals and marine life not deeper than 12m / 40ft.
Padangbai, The Jetty.
This pier is enormous (200 + metres long) and can not be covered in just 2 dives.
Only skillful experienced divers should attempt this site due to lots of discarded fishing line, unpredictable currents and a silty bottom that disturbs easily thus pissing off your fellow photographers and videographers.
Tulamben, USAT Liberty Wreck.
USAT Liberty is convenient wreck dive, just meters away from the shore. The wreck starts at about 10m, with most over the wreckage between 10m-20m, and the deepest at 30m.
Tulamben, Dropoff.
The reef edge lies at a depth of 5 to 10mtrs after which the reef drops down steeply to approx. 60-70mtrs. The wall captivates with its wonderful growth of corals as well as many gorgonian sea fans and sponges. Special mention must be made to the huge shoals of mackerels and the bumphead-parrotfish which can be seen here very frequently. Also, in the early morning hours and with the right current, whitetip reef sharks, sunfish, grey reef sharks and occasionally even hammerhead sharks can be observed.

Padang Bai Hut walk through
This is a quick walk though of the Beach huts at Padang Bai in Bali, Indonesia.
They are located just across the street from the Beach.
Video taken in October 2013.
At a price of only 15$/night including breakfast they are a very unique way to stay in tropical Bail.
The room was clean and equipped with a fan. Warm water was available during daytimes.
At breakfast we had a choice of 5-6 different meals and Bali coffee or tea.
Although I wouldn't recommend the Beach for swimming and snorkeling, as there is a lot of boat traffic in the bay.
There are beautiful beaches just in the next bay either side of the main Padang Bai bay beach with great snorkeling spots, beach restaurants and bars, and cool shore breaking waves to play around.
On the ground level is a seating area including several chairs and a couch. In the rear room is a bathroom including a western style toilet, shower and wash basin.
During my visit, there were a couple roaches in the bathroom, which is totally normal for this tropical climate.
The first level however was very clean and tidy.
On the first level is another small seating area and the lockable bedroom, including a double bed with fly screen and a ceiling fan also several european style power points, which is typical for Bali.
Snorkeling At Blue Lagoon In Padangbai, Bali
This is my first attempt at using a GoPro underwater, and as such I made a few mistakes so this footage is not as good as it could have been!
One mistake was setting the video quality to 4K, which meant my frame rate was a low 12 fps, which along with my shaky handling resulted in a very choppy, shaky video - although YouTube stabilizing helps a fair bit!

Hidden Bali : Fishing Plastic in Padang Bai
Hi Wanderer! You know that one of the best places to dive and snorkel in Bali is Padang Bai. But do you know, turns out, beside diving and snorkeling we could also COLLECT TRASH? The truth is, inhabitants of the ocean are not only fish or coral reefs, but also plastic monsters that destroy the marine ecosystem. So, DOES PLASTIC MAKE OUR OCEAN BEAUTIFUL?? CERTAINLY NOT. Then how can we reduce this phenomenon? Of course we can change small things of our life with less or zero waste lifestyle.
HOW TO MAKE A CHANGE?
Find ways to make everyday #EarthDay - whether by saving water, picking up rubbish on the street, reducing waste at home, or simply appreciating the beauty of the Earth that surrounds us, we should all do our part to protect our only home! We received so much from this planet and there are ways to honor the Mother Earth. Take some time today to appreciate all that nature provides us by using reusable bags & cups, avoid single-use plastics, and use public transportation.
LET US MAKE A CHANGE FOR BETTER EARTH!!

Padang Bai & Blue Lagoon
Padangbai is noted for its diving and the friendly dive centres are right on the beach with their own bars for after-diving refreshments.
Padang Bai is often overlooked by scuba diving visitors to Bali, yet it has white and golden sandy beaches and very nice diving. The main Lombok - Bali ferry services departs / arrives here hourly, but except for this Padang Bai is a pleasant sleepy place.
The Padang Bai dive sites have healthy corals and usually calm conditions (though possible currents some days) and clear bright visibility. The dive sites are reached in a local boat, a few minutes from the beach.
THE JETTY, PADANG BAI, BALI, INDONESIA 1280x720p
The Jetty is a little known dive site just out of Pedangbai harbor on the East Coast of Bali. The Jetty is home to a plethora of macro life including Hairy, Painted, and Giant Frog fish, Ornate Ghost Pipe fish , Stick Pipe fish, a huge variety of Nudibranchs, Octopus, Snake Eels, Soles, Lion fish, various Scorpion fish, Crocodile fish and even Weedy and Paddleflap Rhinopias.
This pier is enormous (200 + metres long) and can not be covered in just 2 dives, I recommend going the week before or the week after full moon when the currents are at their weakest and do at least 2 dives on it.
Only skillful experienced divers should attempt this site due to lots of discarded fishing line, unpredictable currents and a silty bottom that disturbs easily thus pissing off your fellow photographers and videographers.
