Paddle Steamer DVD | A documentary history of Australian paddle steamers...
Paddle Steamer | DVD | SOURCE TO SEA - The Story of the Murray Riverboats.
Australia's Centenary of Federation's 'Source to Sea' event took more than three years to plan and three months to complete.
It was one of the most memorable journeys ever undertaken down Australia's greatest river - the Murray - from its source in the Kosciusko high country to the sea at the Murray mouth town of Goolwa.
To celebrate this event and document the valuable role paddlesteamers and riverboats played in the development of Australia a television crew was part of the flotilla that undertook the 100-day journey that took these boats from 'source to sea'.
This documentary celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Murray River trade and brings to life the colourful history of Australia's old paddlesteamers, riverboats and barges. It shows the dedication of an increasing number of 'passionately mad' wooden boat restorers.
The one-hour TV special on Australia's paddlesteamers includes the story of steam, the hard work, the humour and the romance of the river trade.
At times the fleet included more than 200 heritage and leisure craft, paddlesteamers and riverboats, some of the paddle steamers were more than 100 years old. Never before had such a flotilla ever been assembled on the Murray River, or anywhere else in the world.
In the late 1800s, several hundred paddleboats and barges opened up much of inland Australia along the Murray, Darling and Murrumbidgee Rivers. Today Australia has more original paddleboats than anywhere else in the world.
It's a story about passion and love - passion for old paddleboats and love of a river,
executive producer and South Australian documentary maker Ian Doyle said. Compared to the stories of drovers, shearers and squatters, very little is known about the important role these boats played in the history of Australia. Things would have been very different had Australian explorers like Lawson and Patterson written about the Murray and her riverboats, as Mark Twain wrote about the Mississippi river, her paddlesteamers and riverboats. This would have placed the Murray more in the centre of Australians' consciousness and the current problems facing the Murray would have been less serious than they are today. The documentary tells the wonderful story of these boats, Ian Doyle said. The documentary also includes never before seen private family archival footage and historic photographs and celebrates the unique story of the Murray riverboats.
Directed by Paul Williams, the documentary features memorable vision and the stories of many of Australia's historic paddleboats that took part in Centenary of Federation's event including the PS Oscar W, the PS William Randell and the PV Akuna Amphibious.
SOURCE TO SEA -- the Story of the Murray Riverboats was made with the assistance of Peter and Jan Teakle from Akuna Station and the SA Tourism Commission.
Proceeds from the sale of the 68-minute director's cut video of 'Source to Sea - the Story of the Murray Riverboats' and 104-minute interactive DVD are in support of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The Paddle Steamer Capital of the World! - Echuca, Australia HD
In the 1860s to the early 1900's, Echuca was a bustling port with paddlesteamers ferrying people and goods all through the the Murray, Darling and Murrumbidgee River systems.
By the early 1970's, the port was derelict and unused. The council of the day decided that its paddlesteamer heritage was unique and started restoration of the port.
Today the paddlesteamers are making a comeback. Many old sunken boats are being repaired to their former glory.
Kevin Hutchinson is a Shipwright who has played a large role in the paddlesteamer revival.
Echuca is a great example of how rural towns can use their heritage to establish tourism.
