THE VOYAGE
by JOHNNY DUHAN
I am a sailor, and you're my first mate
We signed on together, we coupled our fate
Hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail
For the hearts treasure together we set sail.
With no maps to guide us, we steered our own course
Rode out the storms when the winds were gale force
Sat out the doldrums in patience and hope
Working together we learned how to cope.
Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled water that keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us we have our own crew.
And together we're sailing this ship
We built it with care to last the whole trip
Our true destination is not marked on any charts
We're navigating to the shores of the heart.
Life is an ocean and love is a boat
In troubled water that keeps us afloat
When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
Now gathered round us we have our own crew.

Tour on the Suir
August 2016 and rumour of a heatwave, saw Lir Canoe Club & friends, head off on an Irish Canoe Classic, the River Suir Blueway. Three days paddling and two nights camping, along the Suir, from Cahir to Kilsheelan, in County Tipperary.
Using the access from Inch field, beside Cahir castle, we paddled past Swiss Cottage, within sight of Galtymore and onwards to Ardfinnan, where a break in the weir provided our first spot of entertainment (it's amazing how you build things up, if its been a while since you've had a good paddling). Under the bridge, another small weir, then we passed under the shadows of the Knockmealdowns and on to our first campsite of the trip. Wild camping can be difficult, with all the land on the riverbank being in private hands, but we were made welcome to camp in a field belonging to Kilmaneen Farmhouse and Accommodation, hopefully something can be developed of this to really help open up the Blueway.
Toasted marshmallows on the campfire, a bit of a sing song and a wonderful nights sleep followed, before launching again Saturday morning. As messages filtered through, from home, of the heatwave our families were enjoying, we endured a misty drizzly morning, before respite for lunch by a steep sheltered bank. Weather cleared up again in the afternoon and we continued our journey to Camp 2 , following the watery borderline between Waterford and Tipp, viewing old country piles through the thick undergrowth and chatting to the livestock along the way.
A mixture of paddlers came and went over the duration, in Canadian canoes, creekers and touring kayaks. Our final day was a leisurely affair, enjoying the route below the Nire Valley and the Comeraghs. Navigating river left of the island in Clonmel the canoes had to portage a weir - the fish slide was blocked with some debris. River right of the island, would've brought us into the construction site for the new slalom course, opening end of September, 2016.
Admiring the (not so) beautiful, but highly practical flood defences along the quays before paddling back towards the open countryside, Slievenamon looming beyond. A brief pause, before the final stretch, meadows, bridges, ruins, (Bulmers) orchards and a few rapids taking us to our destination by the bridge in Kilsheelan.
A wonderful weekend with friends and (paddling) family and a great location with so much to offer and more to come!

Barrow Boating - James and Phil Canoeing
Phil and Myself went to Barrow Boating in Loughborough - Great service and lovely people - Really well priced too at £7 per hour.
We really recommend this place as its along a rive so you can keep going, unlike it being in an enclosed lake.
We enjoyed it that much, we are thinking of getting our own one
