Hello. Today we're going to be riding the Turkey Creek Sanctuary in Malabar, Florida. For those of you not familiar with the area, Malabar is a small town in Brevard County, part of the Melbourne/Palm Bay area of the Florida Space Coast.
Turkey Creek is a multi-use trail that is shared by bikers, hikers, trail runners, and - in some parts - horses. The trail system is divided into the North and South Red Loops, the Blue Loop (sometimes called the Root Loop, because it is full of tree roots), and the Yellow Loop, also known as Malabar Scrubs due to the scrub vegetation in the area.
We're starting out on the south Red Loop, a trail with lots of tree cover and some exposed roots. Though it can be slow-going through the rooty sections, there's also plenty of fast single track with good flow.
Turning off of the Red Loop, which we'll rejoin later, we'll head towards the Blue (Root) Loop. This involves navigating a short bridge and a rooty section, before the tree cover disappears and we start the Blue Loop.
Crossing over this fire break starts the Blue Loop. There's been some controlled burns in this area. When I filmed this, parts of it still smelled a little burnt.
There's not much elevation change on this trail. Elevation probably varies between 0 and 20 feet, or about 7 meters for those of you on the metric system.
Heading back towards the Red Loop, we have to cross a fairly long bridge. Just try not to run off the edge.
I love this part. Nice and fast.
Taking a right at the information sign, we'll start heading towards the scrub trails. This part is quite well marked. Just follow the signs marked East and on the way back we'll follow the signs marked West.
This guy has earbuds in. I yelled at him a few times and he never turned around. Pro tip: if you have to run the music, just use one earbud and try and be aware of your surroundings.
This is the trailhead behind the fire station on Malabar Road. A lot of people start their ride here since there's plenty of parking and also restrooms. Interesting point: this abandoned looking road that crosses through the trail system is Corey Rd. It was part of a development that never happened.
Coming off of the Yellow Loop, we're going to pass by the nursing home on Briar Creek Rd, but only for a few seconds, then it's back onto the trail. This section is my favorite part of the Turkey Creek system. It has great flow, so kudos to whoever is maintaining it.
Now we're back where we started from, but instead of stopping we're going to cross over Briar Creek Blvd and head onto the north part of the Red Loop. This is very similar in style to the section we were just on.
I had to stop and change the battery in my GoPro here. This is a picnic area right by the kayak launch which you'll see me ride by in a few seconds.
Thanks for riding with me. Check out the Strava link in the description if you want to see the GPS data from this ride.

Kayaking In Florida Kayaking The Withlacoodhee River From Hwy 48 To Bonnert Lake
For more kayak stories subscribe to my channel
This was a short afternoon trip on the beautiful Withlacoodhee River. Daniel Boone, yep that's his real name and yes he is related to the original, my paddling buddy and I launched from the Wynnhaven park on hwy 48 between Floral City and Bushnell.
We got on the water about 3:30 on a hot November, Thursday afternoon. Our goal was to paddle downriver about 3/4 miles to Lake Bonnet and then enter both the Orange State Canal and the Leslie Hefner canal.
We were able to get into both canals but the Orange was heavy with floating plant life so we did not go far. We went back out into
the lake and entered the Leslie Hefner canal which was clear. Both canals and the river are very beautiful and do a great job of
displaying a Florida which can not be seen from land.
We enjoy kayaking on streams and canals that are less traveled and are remote. The bird life and scenery make the effort to reach
these places well worth the effort.
I made the mistake of using my iPhone to video the trip instead of my usual video camera and the audio was not good and I
lost some of the best views along the river. However I hope there is enough here to encourage others to make this trip.

blessed to live in an area where within 20 minute drive i can paddle in many different environments. The skinny waters of the Gulf of Mexico with a variety of sharks, stingrays, sea turtles and crabs. The fresh water springs like Weeki Watchee and Three Sisters Springs where your sure to meet a manatee, to the salt water springs and mangroves where i'll always see some exotic birds, otters and an occasional dolphin hunting mullet.
