Day 8 in the Philippines!! Pagsanjan Falls and shooting rapids day tour! This was such an amazing way to spend the day. In nature, meeting tons of new people -- and animals. I will say, this was my first taste of Filipino Traffic -- and I do not think anyone is exaggerating anymore -- it was horrendous. hahaha I highly recommend shooting rapids for an quick escape from Metro Manila!

It's a shame growing up in the province of Laguna and actually seeing this famous waterfalls for the first time. Pagsanjan Falls, currently known as Cavinti falls (which is technically where it is located) is one of the main tourist attraction in these towns. We took the more challenging way going there which is through the jump off point. Trekking the pathway is not a walk in the park as well. This activity is a must-have for those seeking adventures and beautiful places to lay eyes on. Let's go!

Up the rapids and under the falls - Pagsanjan, Philippines
Well, you sit in the middle of a canoe (bangka) and go UP the river, against the current and over the rocks, towards the falls. This takes about 45 minutes. It's a beautiful trip, scenically, and the journey itself is physically thrilling. The skill and athleticism of the boatmen (bankeros) - one at the front and one at the back - is fantastic: imagine what might happen if any of them slipped or got a foot or hand caught between the boat and the rocks or a boat going in the other direction. Not having seen anyone guide a boat through rapids by kicking at the passing rocks, it comes as quite a surprise when the lead bankero suddenly stops paddling, stands up and sticks his foot out...
When you arrive at the falls, you get out of your canoe and climb onto a raft, which is pulled across the lagoon with ropes, and takes you under the falls and then into the cave beyond.
The trip back down the river is possibly even more exciting, because you are going with the current, and therefore travelling very much faster. There are fourteen rapids in all. As you will see, our bankeros were determined to overtake everyone else - which gave things a nice competitive edge!
The Pagsanjan Falls were the location for the closing scenes of Apocalypse Now. So it was a shame that Marlon spent so much time inside that building, in the dark, mumbling.
My thanks to the kind Australian lady with the waterproof camera who provided the stills of us all sitting on the raft as we headed through the falls and into the cave.

Bangkero Festival Pagsanjan, Philippines
