Paigah Tombs : Hyderabad
Paigah Tombs or Maqhbara Shums Ul Umra, are the tombs belonging to the nobility of the Paigah or the Shums ul Umrahi family. They are located in Hyderabad, India, at Pisal banda suburb.
This style of architecture is unique to the Paigah tombs.
The tombs were constructed in the year 1787's by Nawab Taig Jung Bahadur and later by his son Amir e Kabir I (In the 1880s some additions were made by Sir Asman Jah, Sir Khurshid Jah and Sir Vikar Ul Umra). The tombs of several generations of the Paigah nobles include Abul Fatah Khan Shums ul Umra I to shums ul Umra v, Sir Asman Jah, Sir Khursheed Jah, Sir Vicar-ul-Umra, Sultan ul Mulk, Lady Vicar ul Umra, Lady Khurshid Jah, Lady Asman Jah, Moin ud Dowla, Zaheer yar Jung and other members of the Paigah family.

Hyderabad Shaan - History of Paigah Tombs
Paigah Tombs which is also called as 'South Taj Mahal' that exhibits the nobility of Shums ul Umrahi family which are located in Hyderabad. These tombs were constructed by Nawab Taig Jung Bahadur and later by his son in 1787's. The architecture with magnificent structures which represent the Moghal, Greek, Persian, Asaf Jahi, Rajasthani and Deccani style of architecture.

Paigah Tombs or Maqhbara Shams al-Umara, are the tombs belonging to the nobility of Paigah family, who were fierce loyalists of the Nizams, served as statespeople, philanthropists and generals under and alongside them. The Paigah tombs are among the major wonders of Hyderabad State which known for their architectural excellence as shown in their laid mosaic tiles and craftsmanship work. The Paigah's necropolis is located in a quiet neighbourhood 4 km southeast of Charminar Hyderabad, at Pisal banda suburb., down a small lane across from Owasi Hospital near Santosh Nagar. These tombs are made out of lime and mortar with beautiful inlaid marble carvings. These tombs are 200 years old which represent the final resting places of several generations of the Paigah Nobles.
At first, Paigah Tombs may look deserted and totally uncared for, but on a closer look you will find the place quite enthralling. With marvelous carvings and motifs in floral designs and inlaid mosaic tile-works, the tombs are exquisite to walk around. The tombs and their walls are delicately carved and enclosed in pierced marble facades, some of them in rows and some with beautifully carved screens and canopies.
The place is easily approachable and is set amidst a labyrinth of concrete houses built around the 30 acres of property in which the tombs are nestled. They are almost obscure and a marvelous piece of artistry in marble lost in time. The Indo-Islamic architecture is a mix of both the Asaf Jahi and the Rajputana styles of architecture. You will also see décor in fabulous stucco work, representing the Mughal, Persian and Deccan style too. The geometrical designs with their perforated screens are unique in their make and craftsmanship.
Restoration of 150 year old Paigah Tombs begins
Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) which is working on the restoration of Qutb Shahi Tombs has now taken up the renovation of Paigah Tombs, also known as the Taj Mahal of the Deccan.
The nearly 150-year-old necropolis is located near Santosh Nagar.
Paigah Nawabs were next only to the Nizams in military, political and economic power who ruled Hyderabad State from 1724 to 1948.
Though Paigah Tombs are part of the historical and architectural heritage of Hyderabad they have been lying in a state of neglect for several decades.
Looking at the impressive work being carried out by the AKTC at QSTs, the Telangana State Department of Archeology and Museums requested it to help out in restoring the world famous necropolis.
The Trust has mapped out the work at Paigah Tombs and began working on the landscape of the tombs so that the people who visit it would have a place to rest and enjoy the atmosphere.
Speaking to siasat.com, Ratish Nanda, CEO of AKTC said, “The first phase of the work involves landscape. We have begun to plant fruit and flower-bearing and other trees.”

Which has been constructed by Amir e kabir I (Details of which are available in the diary of the Viceroy and the letter written by the then Resident J.C Bayley to Nawab Salar Jung the then prime minister Informing him about important details regarding tombs on 10 March 1882 after the death of the Co Regent and Amir E Kabir III Nawab Rashid uddin Khan Bahadur informing Sir Salar Jung that all the three Amirs wanted to perform the Urs of their Grand Father and Great Grand Father on the same day,he advised The Prime minister to see to it that all three Paigahs perform the Urs ceremony at the same time to maintain protocol and to avoid a situation in which who would perform first could be discussed)Nawab Sir Asman Jah Bahadur, Sir Khurshid Jah and Sir Vikar Ul Umra later made some additions which included the chowkhandis of marble added by Sir Khurshid Jah (this was taken up when Sir Khurshid Jah ordered 18 Chowkhandis over the shrines of Important holy saints all over India.The last addition was made by Lady Vikar ul Umra for herself and her son Nawab Sultan ul Mulk Bahadur Beside the tomb of Amir e Kabir III Nawab Rashid uddin Khan Bahadur.It is in Hyderabad.

Distributed over an area of 30 to 40 acres, the origin of the Paigah tombs dates back to the late 18th century. One of the most popular tourist attractions in Hyderabad, the Paigah Tombs are known for their excellent architecture. One among the best examples of Indo Saracenic architecture, the tombs presents a beautiful mix of Asaf Jah and Rajputani architectural style. Built in white marble, Paigah's tombs captivate visitors with intricate interiors.
Paigahs who married girls from the Nizams were the highest nobles in the princely state of Hyderabad after Nizams' family. Paigahs was the only noble family that had been authorized by the Sultan to have his private army.
Paigah Tombs History:
The nobility Paigah was founded by Abdul Fateh Khan Tegh Jung who had served the 2nd Nizam. The title of Shams-ul-umra which means that the sun among the masses was granted to him by the Nizam. Abdul Fateh Khan Tegh Jung was then buried at the entrance of the complex in the year of 1786. Teng Jung's tomb displays fascinating architecture with exquisite trellis work with a massive canopy. It was renovated by his son Amir E Kabir. It was called Paigah Tombs, which became the last resting place for the rest of the family.
The tombs of Paigah have graves of many members of the family. These members also had a primary nobility in the Nizams court. Some of the tombs are of Sultan-ul-Mulk, Asman Jah, Shams-ul-Umra, Sir Viqar-ul-Umara, Zaheer yar Jung, Sir Khursheed Jah and others.

The tombs of the members of the Paigah family, who were prominent in the court of Nizam, are located in Riyasat Nagar. The tombs of all the family members are adjacent to the tomb of Nawab Taig Jung Shams Ul Umra Bahadur, the first Nawab of their family. There are tombs of Nawab Rafiuddin Khan, Nawab Sir Asman Jha, Nawab Sir Khurshid Jha, Vikar ud Umra, Jasher Jung Bahadur etc.. It is noteworthy, that the tombs of third Nawab Shamshul Umra and Begum Khurshid Jha Bahadur, are very beautiful. All the Paigah tombs are between the trees. There is a two storied entrance to this wide area. This entrance was called 'Naubhat Khan' and drums were sounded here at regular intervals. The tombs are magnificent structures with stucco work on the walls of the entrances and they stand benchmark to the Hyderabadi architecture. These are under the control of Archaeological department now. The tombs which were in a ruined state were repaired with an expenditure of 16 lakh rupees. The most precious Falaknuma Palace was built by Nawab Vikar Ul Umra.
