I'm happy to invite you to discover the most recent field video on my new YouTube Channel:
In this short video you will discover the ruby and sapphire deposit around Pailin in Cambodia that I visited in April 2017 to collect reference samples for the Bahrain Institute for Pearls & gemstones (DANAT). The area is fascinating for people interested in the way gemstones are mined for many reasons: First, the legend about the discovery is presents an interesting link between gem mining and conservation. After many years of mechanized gem mining at the end of the 20th century when the area was disputed between Khmer Rouge and Pro Vietnamese troops, the region has become plagued with land mines.
Today thanks to the gems found in rivers, many survivors from these terrible years are making a living mining rubies and sapphire in a very unusual way as they work season after season the same gem traps they dig in the river beds. Indeed during each rainy season these traps get refilled in heavy mineral and thus they can be mined again. Working in these pits is great for them as there the fact that they lost a leg or a foot is not too much of a burden.

Sapphire and Ruby Mine in Pailin, Cambodia, by GIA. What is a ruby gem and how are they mined? In this video, learn about ruby mining, as Vincent Pardieu explains how local miners use one of the two main rivers in Pailin, Cambodia, to mine for small sapphire and small ruby gems. The miners can find precious stones such as sapphire, ruby and garnet in this area. Cambodia ruby rough can be very expensive, so cutters try to conserve as much weight as possible. Most often, river mining and local mining produces small ruby in Pailin. However, a single source never consistently yields gems that are all the same color and quality.

Searching for Gemstones under Tuol Lvea Bridge at Pailin Province | Ruby Mining Area in Cambodia
My first time to see people searching for ruby, gemstones along the stream under Tuol Lvea bridge in Krong Pailin, Pailing Province in Cambodia. We can see men get in the hole in water to get out some stones, pouring them on a flat bamboo bucket, shaking them to get out dirt, throw away bigger stones to find smaller gem or ruby or whatever valuable so they can keep for sale to middlemen at the market for real cash. They can make at least 30000riel (USD 7.25) a day or maybe more or less or sometime nothing. Ms. Kunthea is our MC trying to introduce and asked the men for information about gemstones mining and others. She's telling about life of men here searching for gemstones. It's really hard for them but that's what they can do to support their families and to survive.

River Mining in Pailin, Cambodia, by GIA. Have you ever wondered what are ruby gems? This video discusses both ruby and sapphire as varieties of the corundum mineral species. The Cambodian ruby is found in a river next to a previously volcanic area. Miners can recover ruby gemstone, where local mining is very popular. Vincent Pardieu describes the Pailin, Cambodia sapphire and how river mining works to find small ruby gems and small sapphire.
