Pailón del Diablo (Devil’s Cauldron) waterfall in Baños de Agua Santa
The Pailón del Diablo or “Devil’s Couldron” waterfall is formed when the Río Verde plunges some 80 meters over a sheer cliff, creating one of Ecuador’s most impressive waterfalls and a sight you will not want to miss when visiting Baños de Agua Santa.
The Pailón del Diablo is easily accessible by car, bicycle, or bus. If you are visiting, the easiest way to get there is to take a “chiva” bus from Baños on the “Ruta de Las Cascadas” tour that also offers zip lines (known locally as “Canopy”) and bungee jumping. Once you arrive, the Pailón del Diablo waterfall is accessed by an easy 1 km walk on a very well-maintained trail. The area is beautiful and the hike in and out is one of the highlights!
The facilities at the Pailón del Diablo include a restaurant, a suspension bridge, and a system of stairs and observation platforms built right into the sheer rock cliffs. We also hiked, or rather climbed up the “Grieto del Cielo”, which is a walkway accessing the top of the Pailón del Diablo waterfall. While not a particularly easy climb, the walkway is very well built, and like the lower observation platforms, building it was a truly impressive feet of engineering!
The Pailón del Diablo waterfall is one of Ecuador’s most impressive waterfalls and is truly an impressive sight and should not be missed on your next trip to Baños de Agua Santa! For more information, be sure to check out “What to See and do in Baños, Ecuador” at the Intentional Travelers Blog.

ECUADOR: Devil's Waterfall (Pailon del Diablo, Banos)
“DEVIL’S WATERFALL” – “PAILON DEL DIABLO”, BANOS, ECUADOR
Obviously – regarding waterfalls – after 7 summers living in Iceland and before that spending almost the whole year in Norway I’ve presumed I have seen it all about what waterfalls can offer us...but wait not so fast with your conclusion.
During my “Ecuador Trip 2016” I spend 2 days in Banos – 2 days of raining basically 24 hours a day. And even there was certainly much more to see in Banos, travel along Waterfall Cascade from Banos to Puyo was probably best alternative how to spend a rainy day. There it did not matter whether you god wet from the sky or from the waterfalls. Actually 2 days rain definitely helped with amount of water in the river and in all waterfall. But “Pailon del Diablo”- Devil’s Pan which I call Devil’s Waterfall was really outstanding between all these others. Not only it was scenic but mainly powerfull beyond any comparison – partially thanks to the fact I could get so close to it. Obviously there were even bigger nuts around the Devil’s Waterfall and some of them steped far too close to waterfall for my comfort. Just see the movie and judge by yourself.
Devil’s Waterfall was definitely one of 5 (or even 3) best experiences during this trip and with consideration that there was so many stunning places in Ecuador and Galapagos it shows you level of my impression from this place.
Enjoy
Jiri
Pailon de Diablo (Devil's Cauldron) Waterfall - Banos, Ecuador
Walking on suspension bridges at Pailon del Diablo (Devil's Cauldron) near Banos, Ecuador
Forgive the terrible camera angle (this is what happens when you give a boy the camera), but this short video will give you an idea of what it's like on the suspension bridges at Pailon del Diablo (Devil's Cauldron). It is a waterfall at the end of a route starting in Banos, Ecuador, that passes multiple waterfalls (ruta de las cascadas). We rented bicycles in Banos and then made the mostly downhill trip ending in a town containing this main waterfall. Here we are walking on suspension bridges to get closer to the waterfall. Be sure to bring rain gear!!!

Pailón del Diablo Waterfall near Baños, Ecuador
This is the fourth video of my trip to Ecuador during August 2016. Ecuador road trip continues near Baños, Ecuador as we journey to the waterfall, Pailón del Diablo (Devil's Cauldron)! This is one of the most impressive waterfalls in the world! You can feel the power! The hike down is beautiful! The stairs you climb down are steep and wet. There is also a cave where you have to crawl on your hands and knees, and climb through a hole and steep staircase in order to get to a place where you can literally touch the back of the waterfall!

El Pailón del Diablo - the Devil's Cauldron FLOW 10 Day Ecuador & Amazon Adventure (Day 7, May)
At 11:45AM, we stopped to visit the WATERFALL located on the Pastaza River... not far away from the town of Baños --
Cascada El Pailón del Diablo (the Devil's Cauldron).
It was RAINING cats & dogs that Wednesday (May 28, 2014)!
First, we find shelter at a little shop to enjoy a hot tea/ hot chocolate!
Then, we walked for about 10-20 min on the paved road up to the Waterfall's Main Entrance (a nice stroll IF the sun was out, but bit longer in the rain).
Entrance fee: $USD 1.50/ person
From the entrance, we walked uphill along a narrow footpath that weaves through beautiful cloud forest until we reached a suspended bridge.
On a sunny, day, this is great spot for bird-watching and one can see a variety of butterflies and orchids along the way.
The Paílón del Diablo is a fairly large waterfall located just 30 minutes away from the town of Baños in Ecuador, in the parish of Rio Verde.
Considered one of the biggest attractions in the area, his name is similar to the formation of a pan and also when viewed from the suspension bridge, one can see on the rock... the face of the devil!
The Pailon del Diablo -- approximately 100 feet high.
