Damien Hirst's 'Verity' statue divides Devon town
'Verity', a controversial 65ft statue of a pregnant woman by artist Damien Hirst, is unveiled in the seaside town of Ilfracombe, Devon, and is greeted with a mixed reception by residents.
Hundreds of residents looked with a mixture of emotions today after a sculpture of a huge, naked, heavily pregnant woman with a sword arrived in their seaside town on a flatbed trailer.
It was their first glimpse of the controversial statue by Damien Hirst which has stirred up controversy since he announced plans earlier this year to loan it to Ilfracombe, Devon, until 2032.
The council has received more than 100 complaints from locals who have described the work of art as obscene and disgusting.
It is now being kept in a temporary compound on site at the entrance to the harbour while contractors continue to work on the sculpture.
It is understood the statue will be hoisted into place on October 17-18, dependent on weather conditions.

Damien Hirst 達米恩·赫斯特 (1965) Painter Sculptor British
tonykwk39@gmail.com
British artist Damien Hirst has shocked and surprised the art world with his unusual works, including glass displays of dead animals and medicine cabinet sculptures.
A successful and controversial artist, Damien Hirst was born in Bristol, England, on June 7, 1965. He emerged as a leading figure in the Young British Artists movement in the late 1980s and 1990s. His works, which include dead animal displays and spin-art paintings, have sold for exceptionally high prices. Hirst is one of the wealthiest artists living today.
Raised Catholic, Damien Hirst grew up in Leeds. His early religion education would later factor into his artwork. He showed an interest in the grisly and gruesome aspects of life early on. His mother would later describe him as a morbid child.
As a teenager, Hirst liked to look at illustrated pathology books, fascinated by the images of disease and injury. He also showed an interest in drawing, a passion his mother supported. His father, a car mechanic, left the family when he was only 12 years old.
Hirst got into trouble as teenager, and was caught shoplifting twice. Despite his sometimes wild behavior, he made his way to college. Hirst studied art at the Goldsmith's College at the University of London. While there, he put together a ground-breaking exhibit entitled "Freeze" in 1988. The show featured the works of Fiona Rae, Sarah Lucas, and others, as well as his own.
Hirst and his fellow students became part of an emerging movement known as the Young British Artists. They were known for their unusual materials and for their challenging art concepts. One of Hirst's early works, "With Dead Head," illustrates his interest in death and shaking up the art establishment. In the photograph the artist, with a huge grin on his face, poses next to a severed head in a morgue.
While not everyone was enthralled with his work, Hirst received support from Charles Saatchi, advertising titan and art collector. Saatchi lent financial assistance to Hirst, and also started collecting Hirst's pieces, which also advanced the artist's reputation. Saatchi bought two of Hirst's medicine cabinet sculptures, which one critic later said constituted "a constellation of still lifes that express and reflect the human body as a field of vulnerabilities and of hopeful medical interventions."
In 1991, Hirst had his first solo exhibition at the Woodstock Street Gallery in London. He also participated in the Young British Artists show at the Saatchi Gallery the following year. There he displayed "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living," a 14-foot-long glass tank with a shark preserved in formaldehyde. The shark had been bought from an Australian fisherman.
Hirst continued to set the art world on fire with his work at the 1993 Venice Bienniale, a renowned international art exhibition. There he showed "Mother and Child Divided," an installation piece that featured a bisected cow and her calf displayed in four vitrines, or glass cases, filled with formaldehyde. With his controversial and sometimes gruesome works, Hirst soon became one of the best known artists in Britain. He won the prestigious Turner Prize in 1995. "It's amazing what you can do with an E in A-Level art, a twisted imagination and a chainsaw," Hirst said in his acceptance speech.
他的標誌性作品就是《生者對死者無動於衷》(The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living), 一條用甲醛保存在玻璃櫃裏面的18英尺長的虎鯊。

Damien Hirst's Verity (Enhanced Version)
Same as my previous Damien Hirst's Verity video , but tweeked to give a sharper and slightly brighter picture.
Damien Hirst's Verity.
A 66 foot bronze-clad sculpture named Verity created by world famous artist Damien Hirst has been loaned to North Devon Council for the next 20 years .
On Tuesday 16 October 2012, Verity was hoisted into position giving residents and visitors their first glimpses of her standing tall on Ilfracombe's Pier.
The statue of Verity pregnant holding a sword aloft and standing on a base of legal books is meant to be a 'modern allegory of truth and justice'
The figure's stance is taken from Edgar Degas' late 19th Century Little Dancer of Fourteen Years and is referenced by Damien Hirst in his earlier bronze Virgin Mother from 2005.
The title 'Verity' is from the Italian word of Truth, while she holds the traditional symbols denoting justice -- a sword and scales.
Filmed with a DJI Phantom Quadcopter , a cheap brushless gimbal and a GoPro Hero3
Black Camera.
Shot at 1080p , 60 fps.
Finally managed to get out filming again :-)
Due to the really bad weather over the winter and work , it has been hard to find a good day to get out filming.

Two Damien Hirst Works Stolen From London Gallery
Two signed Damien Hirst works of art worth £33,000 have been stolen from a west London gallery four days after being displayed.
The pieces were taken from the Exhibitionist Gallery in Notting Hill in the early hours of Monday.
The stolen works, called Pyronin Y and Oleoylsarcosine, feature multi-coloured dots.
Police believe the artworks were specifically targeted and want witnesses to come forward.
'Take us under'
Gallery Manager Nathan Engelbrecht said his heart sank when he received a phone call from the police informing him of the break-in.
He said: We opened in September and it was a bit of a coup to get the Hirst artworks. We had them for four days and then they were stolen.
We wanted Hirst to be in the Christmas show and to help raise our profile and to show people we can get the big names in, so it's a big hit and here's hoping insurance will cover it, if it doesn't it will probably take us under.
It took us a few weeks of negotiations and to have them stolen is really disappointing. They [Damien Hirst's representatives] have been understanding that these things do happen.
Pyronin Y is the larger of the two measuring 40in (1m) by 46in (1.2m). It was produced in 2005 and is worth £15,000.
Oleoylsarcosine was created in 2008 and is worth £18,000. Its dimensions are 26in (67cm) x 35in (89cm).
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said just one person carried out the theft and he may have left in a car.
Det Sgt Jon Lightfoot said: It appears the suspect has specifically targeted the two pieces.
The items would have been visible in the back of the car and we are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to please come forward.
Mr Engelbrecht said: We think we were specifically targeted because on Monday we're closed, and they went for the specific paintings. There were other Hirst works and other big-named artists downstairs.
At the moment, we're literally on the phone trying to find some new artwork for the Christmas season.
Hirst rose to fame as part of a group known as the Young British Artists and is probably best known for a series of works in which he preserved animals, including a shark and a sheep, in formaldehyde.
He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1995.
Hirst's more recent works include Verity, a 66ft bronze-plated statue of a pregnant, naked woman wielding a sword, which was unveiled on Ilfracombe harbour in north Devon in October 2012.
A spokesman for the artist said: This is a police matter and I'm afraid we cannot comment.

Damien Hirst at the Tate Modern
Arguably the most famed artist of this generation, and undoubtedly the most controversial, this month see Damien Hirst exhibit twenty years of work at the Tate Modern. The exhibition's curator Ann Gallagher explains to us why 2012 is the optimum year for such a show, and how the art world has changed in the twenty years since Hirst and the YBAs first took it by storm.
