Tafraoute Morocco: Giant painted rocks & hiking Jebel el Kest. Ep. 11.
The journey from M'hamid to Tafraoute was eventful, to say the least. Being met at the village gates by our guesthouses son, the most adorable 7yr old guide ever, put things in perspective. It was worth the hassle to get here.

Jean Verame, Painted Rocks, Tafraoute, Morocco
In the rugged Anti-Atlas just 4km south-west of Tafraoute, in Aoumerkt, are the famous (and now faded) blue rocks. In 1984, the Belgian artist, Jean Verame, and a team of Moroccan firemen teamed up to create this unique art installation. Armed with 18 tonnes of blue, red, violet and white paint, they sprayed it all over the boulders and small hills of the Anti-Atlas mountains over the course of three months. Fortunately, King Hassan II thought it was a good idea, so it looks like they are there to stay until the paint wears off. Although they have lost their sharpness of colour, the fusion of art and nature is still mesmerising and quite surreal.
BLUE PAINTED ROCKS / LES ROCHES BLEUES TAFRAOUT تافراوت MOROCCO/MAROC
I took the bus from Tiznit to Tafraout تافراوت the journey went really quickly, with those stunning views to be seen for miles. Once I had checked in, I decided to take a bicycle and go on an adventure to the blue painted rocks. The scenery was stunning! ENJOY!!

Painted Rocks of Tafraoute
The pink quarzite rocks of Tafraoute in Morocco's Anti Atlas mountains were painted by a Belgian artist some 20 years ago. This video was taken in 2009, the rocks were given a fresh coat of paint in 2010.
OurTour look out over The Painted Rocks artwork near Tafraoute in Morocco
In 1984 Belgian artist Jean Veran took 18 tonnes of paint and painted some huge rocks in Morocco. Love it (like I did) or loathe it, The Painted Rocks artwork is now part of the already amazing landscape near the town of Tafraoute. Being in a motorhome meant we could sleep the night there and watch the sunset, turning the unpainted rocks a vibrant orange. Have a look for yourself and see what you think.

Painted Rocks Valley - Morocco
In the dry desert landscape with its characteristic red soil, we suddenly discover blue, pink and green formations. The landscape just outside the small town Tafraoute in Anti Atlas in Morocco is amazingly beautiful.
OurTour cycle to Tafraoute from The Painted Rocks in Morocco
We took our trusty BSA bicycles for a spin up to The Painted Rocks just south of Tafraoute in Morocco. On the way back it was downhill, so we gave our Go Pro a test and recorded the trip back and through the town.

South Morocco is NOT just desert. One of our favorite destinations to test a TWIKE is the Anti Atlas region of Tafraoute.

MAROKKO Tafraoute - Ait Mansour
Kleiner Vorgeschmack, sind gerade 3 Monate in Marokko. Heute haben wir einen Ausflug von Tafraoute in die Oase Ait Mansour unternommenen.
Time-Lapse of the Painted Rocks in Morocco ('Les Rochers Peints')
We took this time-lapse of the Painted Rocks in Morocco. The site is just 4 km outside of Tafraoute, which has a lively local market. The rocks were painted by the Belgian artist Jean Veran, who made his stunning art project a reality in the stark Moroccan landscape. The painted blue stone formations come as a surprise, and are a complementary contrast to the landscape's own natural golds and reds. It was also a very serene and quiet area, not at all over run by a lot of tourists. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Tafraout, Morocco in a Selfie
Over the span of several days, I shot and edited this film using only a GoPro Hero and a boom pole to capture the unique town of Tafraout, Morocco...all in a selfie.
The Blue Rocks near Tafraoute in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco
helped us discover the Blue Rocks, just outside the small town of Tafraoute in the Middle Atlas Mountains. In 1984 Belgian artist Jean Verame and a group of local firemen unleasded 18 tons of paint over a collection of boulders to create a surreal landscape work of art.

Anti Atlas, Morocco (Lkst, Tafraout, Ait Mansour, Painted Rock)
