The city is today known as paithan, giving fabric its modern name.
The fabric woven in traditional ways even after many centuries, is renowned as the great fabric not only for Maharashtra but also from India. Even in today's advanced world the methods of weaving Paithani have not changed at all , the reason why its not lessened by a whisker. Paithani Weaving
Paithani gets its name from the place to which this craft belongs- 'Paithan'. Paithan is a town in Maharashtra, located in Aurangabad district. Paithan known as 'Pratishthana' was capital of Satavahana Empire in times of Ruler Shalivahana. This was the time when cotton and textiles were greatly exported from his empire to foreign countries and is also said to be the time when Paithani saree developed.
Major contributors to flourish of Paithani are Peshwas, Aurangzeb, and Nizams. A major incident in history of Paithani is the shift in its manufacturing centre from Paithan to Yeola in Peshwa period.

Documentary on Paithani saree
Paithani (Marathi: पैठणी) is a variety of sari, named after the Paithan town in Aurangabad Maharashtra state where they are woven by hand. Made from very fine silk, it is considered as one of the richest saris in India.
Paithani is characterised by borders of an oblique square design, and a pallu with a peacock design. Plain as well as spotted designs are available. Among other varieties, single colored and kaleidoscope-colored designs are also popular. The kaleidoscopic effect is achieved by using one color for weaving lengthwise and another for weaving widthwise.
