Kunjaru is a hamlet in Kurkaal grama, situated 6-7 miles (approximately 11kms) to the south-east of Shree Krishna’s Udupi.
This small village is reputed for its sanctity owing to the celebrated Durga Temple on a high hillock popularly known by the names: Kunjarugiri, Durgabetta and Vimanagiri.. This potent Durga Saannidhya, which was installed by none other than Lord Parashurama.
The high hills, abodes of Shree Durga and Lord Parashurama, look like “Kunjara” (Elephant) for which the place is known as “Kunjaragiri” or “Kunjarugiri”.
It is also reputed as “Vimanagiri” because the Gods and Godesses came by “Vimana” to offer floral tribute, when Jaganmatha Durga was installed on the hill by the Lord Parashurama.
Sacred association of Vishwaguru Shri Madhwacharya – gives it a prominent place in the spiritual sphere.
The ancient Durga temple stands on the top of Vimanagiri amidst the lush green groves of hilly serenity. This very serene location of the temple, its antiquity and the divinity of the magnificent idol of the Goddess, at once creates a memorable feeling of long lasting devotion and piety in the hearts of the devotees. It has been the experience of every devotee who visits the temple for worship. The devotees feel the spiritual solace and the potent protection at the feet of Durgadevi. The holy atmosphere in and around the shrine, the holy Theerthas, the Lord Parashurama Temple and the nearness to Paajaka Kshetra makes it an important place for the pilgrims.

Udupi - Sri Madhvacharya
Shri Madhvacharya – Proponet of Dvaita (1238-1317 A.D.)
Udupi emerged as a great centre of vedantic philosophy after the advent of Shri Madhvacharya. He was the exponent of ‘Dwaita Vedanta’
Shri Madhvacharya was born in a place called Pajaka at the foot of-a hill called Kunjarugiri or Durga betta, with a Durga temple on its top. The Acharya was born in fulfillment of the prayers offered at Ananteshwara temple by his parents who were Shivalli Brahmins. He was initiated into ascetic renounced order in his sixteenth year. He traversed the length and breadth of the country many times with his trusted disciples. Badrinath in the Himalayas was his favourite spot, where he is reported to have visited the hermitage of his Guru, the divine sage Shri Vedavyasa and received directions for writing his commentaries on ‘Brahmasutras’ and the Mahabharatha epic composed by the divine sage. In all he has written 37 works, 4 on Brahmasutras, 10 on Upanishads, 2 on Shri Bhagavadgita and the rest on various topics of philosophy.
The ‘Dwaita’ philosophy highlights that the Lord and the living entity are always different. Salvation (Moksha) is possible through pure devotion (Bhakti), which is eternal bliss. In several of his works the great Acharya has disclosed his identity as the third incarnation of Lord Vayu, the earlier incarnations being Hanuman and Bhima. He disappeared from human sight in 1317 .A.D. while delivering a discourse on Aitareya Upanishad at a particular spot in Ananteshwara temple.

Udupi - Life of Srila Madhvacharya
Life of Madhvacharya
For twelve years Madhyageha Bhatta would regularly travel the eight miles north from his village of Belle to Udipi. There at the Ananteshvara temple he would pray for a son. One day a devotee in a trancelike state climbed the temple flagpole and announced that to reestablish the purest principles of religion, a male child, an incarnation of Vaayu, the demigod in charge in air, would soon be born. Madhyageha understood within his heart that this would be his own child. Soon his wife, Vedavati, gave birth to a son. The happy couple named him Vaasudeva.
From infancy Vaasudeva showed extraordinary intellect, so much so that he was given brahminical initiation at age five, three years early. Whatever he heard of read, even just once, he could remember. His body was unusually strong, lustrous, and beautiful. At age eleven, Vaasudeva left home for Udipi, to live with Acyutapreksha, an ascetic widely respected for his scholarship and saintly character. After one year, despite strong protest from his father, Vaasudeva renounced the world. Acyutapreksha named him Purnaprajna.
Less than forty days after taking sannyaasa, Purnaprajna defeated Vaasudeva Pandit, a famous wandering scholar, in a public debate. The Pandit was known for his hair-splitting dialectical ability, but he was no match for young Purnaprajna. The Pandit spoke for three days and then dared anyone to refute his conclusions. Purnaprajna shocked the crowd when he accepted the issues, he repeated almost verbatim the Pandit’s arguments. Then, one by one, he smashed them all. His victory was the talk of Udipi. Acyutapreksha gave him the title AAnandatirtha, in recognition of his mastery of Vedaanta.
Word spread far and wide about the debating skill of the young ascetic in Udipi. Challengers and admirers converged on the town. Buddhisaagara and Vaadisiàha, two Buddhist monks who had converted many to their fold, challenged Anandatirtha. After a day-long skirmish, they promised to return the next day. That night, however, they secretly fled from Udipi.
Anandatirtha went on a tour of South India. The most notable events on this tour were two encounters with Vidyaashankara Svaami, the lineal successor to Shripaada Shankaraacharya, who was the original propounder of the monistic theory of the Absolute Truth. Some basic tenets of Shankaraacharya’s philosophy are as follows: God and the soul are identical; the formless, senseless, impersonal Absolute is the only reality; all else is illusion; and the incarnations of God are all products of illusion. Anandatirtha was thoroughly familiar with this doctrine, so he knew all its weak points. With firmness and courage he challenged the venerated Vidyaashankara, and a fierce debate ensued. Vidyaashankara could not defeat his opponent, yet he refused to accept defeat. They met again, in Rameshvaram, during the monsoon season, at which time Vidyaashankara taunted and harassed Anandatirtha. But the young saint tolerated the abuse.
On his return journey, while addressing an assembly of learned men, Anandatirtha stated that every Vedic utterance conveyed a triple meaning, that each verse of the Mahaabhaarata had ten meanings, and that each of the thousand prominent names of Lord Vishnu had a hundred meanings. When the astonished assembly demanded he prove his statement, AAnandatirtha explained a hundred meanings of Vishva, the first name of Vishnu. Before he could proceed further, however, they begged him to stop, admitting they didn’t have the intelligence to comprehend his elaborate explanations.
Back in Udipi, Anandatirtha, who was now known as Madhva, wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad-gitaa and gave a copy to Acyutapreksha for his approval........

Udupi - Places close to Udupi
Places close to Udipi
1) Malpe Beach:
There is a temple at Malpe which is known as odabhaandishvara. This temple of Lord Balaram at Malpe is well worth a visit and appears to be of great vintage. This is the deity which was acquired by Madhavacharya alongwith Udipi Krishna. It is only a short distance to the beach from the temple and so it is possible to walk to where Sri Madhva saved the ship carrying the deity of Sri Krishna from being wrecked during a storm.
2) Pajaka Kshetra:
It is at a distance of 12 kms from Udupi. It was at this place that Lord Parashurama created 4 ponds namely Gadathirtha, Parashuthirtha, Banathirtha, Dhanushthirtha and installed goddess Durga atop the hill. The house where Shri Madhwacharya was born is at the foot of the hill. Even to this day one could see the spots where the Acharya spent his childhood and performed miracles.
Some memorabilia of the seer can be found here, like the huge banyan tree and the two stones he lifted and the pond from where he used to fetch water.
Reaching pajaka: it is around 12 km from Udupi. One can go to Katapady by bus(whichever bus goes towards Mangalore go via Katapady) and from there we can take another bus (frequency is less) or we can go by auto riksha(distance is around 6km from Katapady to Pajaka)
Prasadam @ pajaka: if we inform the residents (descendants of madvacharya) then they prepare delicious south Indian prasadam but there is no prasadam distribution otherwise.
Staying facility @ pajaka: the temple has a guest house adjacent to the temple. (may accommodate 200-250 but not sure.)
Places in Pajaka:
1. The same house in which Madhvacharya lived,
2. Anathapadmanabha Swami temple inside the house,
3. The stone on which Madhvacharya started aksharabhyasa,.
4. Gurukul,
5. Tamarind tree which came out from the seed given by Madhvacharya to his father in order to clear the debt of his father,
6. Pushkarini which was constructed by Madhvacharya (by inviting all the holy rivers together) for his old parents who were unable but wanted to go on a pilgrimage to take bath in all the major holy rivers,
7. Banyan tree (a beautiful place to have class. Can easily accommodate around 100)
8. Guest house.
3) SRI MAHABALESHWARA TEMPLE, Gokarna
Gokarna, 180 kms from Udupi, is famous all over India for the Atmalinga of Lord Shiva in its ancient Mahabaleshwara temple. This temple is considered as important as the famous Kashi Viswanatha temple in Benares. According to the legends, Ravana obtained the Atmalinga from Lord Shiva whom he worshipped through great penance. He was, however, told that the Linga should not be put on the ground till he reached his place. While Ravana was on his way back home, Lord Ganesha, in the guise of a small boy, offered to hold the Lingam on his palms, when Ravana had to answer the Nature's call, on the understanding that the boy would call him thrice and if Ravana failed to come, he would put it down. Ravana did fail to come when called, and the Atmalinga got embedded in the earth. Ravana could not extricate it with all the effort at his command. In doing so, one part, which came off, had the shape of a cow's ear (Gokarna). Hence the place came to be known as such. The Lingam at Gokarna came to be known as Mahabala since it could not be lifted from the ground.
It is said that the second part of the Lingam got twisted around and came to be known as Murdeshwar. Overlooking the sea, there is a lovely temple constructed over this part of the Lingam. This place known as Murdeshwar is situated between Bhatkal and Honnavar, on the west coast highway. There is a Guest House nearby for the convenience of the pilgrims.
The remnant of the Atmalingam which came off like a blade, is known as Dhareshwar (Dhar means a sharp edge) and is at a place called Dhareshwar nearby.

TEERTHA PRABANDHA
Thirtha Prabandha is one of the main Sanskrit works by Sri Vadiraja Swamy, the 16th century Dvaita philosopher and saint. The document is written in the form of a travelogue and contains descriptions of pilgrim centers throughout India.
The work comprises 235 shlokas and is divided into 4 chapters, one for each direction. Sri Vadiraja Swamy composed this document during his extensive pilgrimage throughout India. The shlokas, in addition to describing the places, also provides information on the sacredness of the places and praises the deities.
The chapter covering North India mentions important places such as Pandarapur, Prayag, Kashi, Gaya, Mathura and Ayodhya. The chapter on South India covers Rameshwaram, Kanyakumari and Trivandrum. The chapter on West India covers Pajaka, Udupi, Gokarna and Kolhapur. The chapter on East covers Puri, Ahobila and Hampi. A total of about 100 places are covered in the document. In addition to holy places, a lot of rivers, including Ganges, Yamuna, Kaveri and Godavari are mentioned.
Thirtha Prabandha is held in high esteem amongst practising Madhvas and a recitation of all the shlokas is considered equal to an actual pilgrimage covering all the mentioned places.
