The Kameng River in the eastern Himalayan mountains, originates in Tawang district from the glacial lake below snow capped Gori Chen mountain on the India-Tibet border in South Tibet and flows through Bhalukpong circle of West Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh and Sonitpur District of Assam, India. It is one of the major tributaries of the Brahmaputra River, joining it at Tezpur, just east of the Kolia Bhomora Setu bridge.The Kameng River is about 264 kilometres (164 mi) long. Its drainage basin is about 11,843 square kilometres (4,573 sq mi) large.The Kameng forms the boundary between East Kamemg District and West Kameng Districts and is also the boundary between the Sessa and Eaglenest sanctuaries to its west and the Pakke tiger reserve to the east. The Dafla Hills are east and the Aka Hills (home of Aka tribe) are west of the Kameng River. The entire stretch of forest along the Bhalukpong-Bomdila highway on the west bank of the river in West Kameng has vanished in the last few years though the forest across the river continues to be in a healthy state.

Amazing Snow View in Arunachal Pradesh

Driving to the remote part of Arunachal Pradesh in the north east corner of India was an exhilarating experience . Colours change with every curve in the mountains and so does the scenery. bright yellow mustard fields merge ith some brilliant orchids that suddenly morph into dense forests with rivers gliding past them to snow clad mountains and conifers kissed by snow flakes to frozen lakes to a valley of clouds that wrapped mountains…

If there is heaven on earth, this is it . A valley of clouds that hid everything from mountain peaks to grasslands , flowers and birds and touched our cheeks gently as we got down to capture it on our lens .

Tawang set high in the Eastern Himalayas The mountains curved as River Kameng . It had just snowed. All of a sudden, it was white all around. Snow,ice and clouds – all around. A glacier , snow clad mountains wrapped in a valley of clouds was all you could see till you came to a gate guarded by dragons with bright coloured flags fluttering all around.

At Sella Pass , where history and romance meet at 13700 feet. At the height of Indo-China war in 1960s, Sella was a local maiden who had fallen in love with Jaswant Singh , an Indian soldier . She died a martyr and the pass was named after her and was marked as a boundary between India and China. Jaswant Garh,a memorial for the soldier is also close by.

Tawang is a town which sees the first rays of sun in India, but ironically the sun never shines . The temperature was many numbers below zero. Tawang is famous for its monasteries,gompas on one end, a war memorial on the other .Its a town ravaged by war and was once in possession of the Chinese. The home of the Mompas, Tawang is known for the lakes and waterfalls.And we set out looking for them. This is the road that takes you to Tibet and China.

Snow was snow scattered all over , carpeting a mountain here and there , while the lake was frozen. There were several lakes , a mix of water and ice ;some with coloured flags fluttering high,some dotted with a small temple .

Getting there Tawang is in Arunachal Pradesh and you need a permit to visit AP. You can get one at Gauhati. A long journey by road via Tezpur and a stop over at Bomdila or Dirang is a must .Ideally break the journey into two days . A commonly-used route is Tezpur to Dirang by road. During this journey, one comes across the check post at Bhalukpong. To do this, tourists usually hire a Tata Sumo, which are readily available near the bus station in Tezpur and the only model available for tourists. A seat in a Tata Sumo will cost you around Rs 600/-. These old war horses do a great job running over roads which are sorely in need of an asphalt surface.

Bhalukpong is the entry point of Arunachal Pradesh, located in West Kameng District and is 60 km from Tezpur. This small town is a mesmerizing place for wildlife enthusiasts as it is close to the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary. The mighty river Kameng enters Bhalukpong after completing turbulent courses. This mountain river provides rare opportunity for adventure tourism.

Passing Bhalukpong, Tenga Valley and Bomdila, you will reach the fabulous stone village of Dirang after nine hours of journey.

Driving near the Orchid Research centre in Tipi, Bhalukpong area

Tipi is a town that is located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and it is famous for its orchid farms, near Bhalukpong and close to the Assam border.

The town has the third largest orchidarium in Asia and this is the main attraction of the place. The research center that is located in the town is visited by many tourists and there are many different varieties of the flower that are grown here. The center was first established in the year 1972 and there are 20 species of endangered orchids that can be seen here. In total there are over 500 varieties of orchids that are present here and some of them are artificially created by scientists.
The place is located near the River Kameng and this is a perfect place for fishing and other similar activities. One can also opt for river rafting in the rapids of the river. Some of the other activities that are possible are trekking and hiking. There are various spots that are located around the place that are ideal for this. One can also visit the Pakhui Game Sanctuary that can be reached by crossing the Kameng River using a canoe. The park is covered with evergreen forests and lush green vegetation.

Pakke Tiger Reserve ranger gives introductory lecture on safety

Pakke Tiger Reserve is one of the finest yet one of the least visited tourist destinations in India. Not very far from the usual Kaziranga-Nameri-Eaglenest-Tawang route is the option of visiting PTR. PTR is a two and a half hour drive from Kaziranga National Park and an hour and a half away from Nameri National Park.

Once you reach PTR, you are guaranteed of a wilderness experience. You will most likely encounter wild elephants along the way, sometimes the occasional charge by a makhna (tuskless male elephant). Also commonly seen along trails are four species of squirrels, capped langurs and Assamese macaques. Along the banks of the Khari, Upper Dikorai and Pakke Rivers, there are plenty of signs of riverine species such as the crab-eating mongoose, at least two species of otters and regular sightings of the Assam roof turtle.

PTR is a paradise for viewing and photographing four species of hornbills. The experience of watching hornbills flying to their roost is a must for every wildlife enthusiast. Every evening, just before sunset you will be lucky to witness more than a hundred hornbills flying above the horizon to their roost sites. In addition, PTR harbors other specialties such as the ibisbill and the White-winged wood duck. Nestled among hills and criss crossed by rivers, Khari is only 13 km away from the park headquarters at Seijosa. white-winged wood ducks are often sighted in Khari Lake, which is a 10 km trek from Khari Beat.

The location of bhalukpong in itself is breathtaking.is situated on the border of dense forest of pakhui wildlife sanctuary and shores of river kameng...though tourist spots are not many,the entire place in itself is an amazing bundle of entertainment with spectacular views and various outdoor activities.

Kameng River and Vast Green Forest of Bhalukpong in Arunachal Pradesh.Bhalukpong is a small town located along the southern reaches of the Himalayas in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh in India. The town is located at 213m above sea level, 100 km from Bomdila, 52 km from Tezpur and 5 km from Tipi. It lies along the Kameng river and is the headquarters of Bhalukpong circle. A road leads to Bomdila via the Tipi Orchidariurm, and the inner line check post is located at Bhalukpong. Bhalukpong was governed by local tribal Aka rulers, with occasional political dominance from Bhutan and Assam. Ahom rulers of Assam did not interfere with the local tribals, except for retaliatory raids into the tribal territory. In 1873, the British had declared the area around Bhalukpong as off-limits.

Fish angling and river rafting are the principal tourist activities in Bhalukpong. Tourist attractions in Bhalukpong include the Pakhui Game Sanctuary and Tipi Orchidariurm, which hosts over 2600 cultivated orchids from 80 different species.The annual festival Nyethidow of the Aka tribe is celebrated in january at Bhalukpong,Thrizino . Bhalukpong is inhabited by members of the Aka Tribes.


Arunachal Pradesh attained its statehood on 20th February 1987. It is situated in the North-Eastern part of India with 83743 sq. kms area and has a long international border with Bhutan to the west (160 km), China to the north and north-east (1,080 km) and Myanmar to the east (440 km). It stretches from snow-capped mountains in the north to the plains of Brahmaputra valley in the south. Arunachal is the largest state area-wise in the north-east region, even larger than Assam which is the most populous.It is situated between latitude 26° 30' N and 29° 30 ' N and longitude 91° 30' E and 97° 30' E. Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh and located at an altitude of 530 meters above MSL. It is named after Itafort meaning fort of bricks built in 14th century A.D.

Pakke Tiger Reserve and its surroundings

Pakke Tiger Reserve is one of the finest yet one of the least visited tourist destinations in India. Not very far from the usual Kaziranga-Nameri-Eaglenest-Tawang route is the option of visiting PTR. PTR is a two and a half hour drive from Kaziranga National Park and an hour and a half away from Nameri National Park.

Once you reach PTR, you are guaranteed of a wilderness experience. You will most likely encounter wild elephants along the way, sometimes the occasional charge by a makhna (tuskless male elephant). Also commonly seen along trails are four species of squirrels, capped langurs and Assamese macaques. Along the banks of the Khari, Upper Dikorai and Pakke Rivers, there are plenty of signs of riverine species such as the crab-eating mongoose, at least two species of otters and regular sightings of the Assam roof turtle.

PTR is a paradise for viewing and photographing four species of hornbills. The experience of watching hornbills flying to their roost is a must for every wildlife enthusiast. Every evening, just before sunset you will be lucky to witness more than a hundred hornbills flying above the horizon to their roost sites. In addition, PTR harbors other specialties such as the ibisbill and the White-winged wood duck. Nestled among hills and criss crossed by rivers, Khari is only 13 km away from the park headquarters at Seijosa. white-winged wood ducks are often sighted in Khari Lake, which is a 10 km trek from Khari Beat.

Dense green vegetation in Tipi

Tipi is a town that is located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh and it is famous for its orchid farms.
The town has the third largest orchidarium in Asia and this is the main attraction of the place. The research center that is located in the town is visited by many tourists and there are many different varieties of the flower that are grown here. The center was first established in the year 1972 and there are 20 species of endangered orchids that can be seen here. In total there are over 500 varieties of orchids that are present here and some of them are artificially created by scientists.
The place is located near the River Kameng and this is a perfect place for fishing and other similar activities. One can also opt for river rafting in the rapids of the river. Some of the other activities that are possible are trekking and hiking. There are various spots that are located around the place that are ideal for this. One can also visit the Pakhui Game Sanctuary that can be reached by crossing the Kameng River using a canoe. The park is covered with evergreen forests and lush green vegetation.
