Electronic bicycle parking in Utrecht (Netherlands)
Local authorities in the Netherlands face a constant challenge: where is the space to place racks to park all the bicycles Dutch cyclists bring into the centers of cities and towns. In an attempt to free more spaces the Railways built an electronic system near the railway station of Utrecht. It monitors the time bicycles are parked so bicycles that are parked too long (more than 14 days) can be removed to make much needed room for other bicycles. This is a trial in Utrecht and Groningen.
A Traditional Dutch Street Organ in Utrecht
I had to feel a little sorry for these two guys because hardly anybody put any money in their tins. Operating a street organ (draaiorgel) seems like a hard way to make a living.
utrecht: stroming
Among major cities in the Netherlands, Utrecht has the highest cycling mode share with over half of all trips by bike. Its central train station, the hub of an intercity rail system that functions like the world's longest metro system, lies just west of its car-light historic core. For a city that sits at the intersection of Rhine-fed, river-sized canals to the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, this may seem to have been fated by the Romans.
But it almost didn't happen. Between the core and station, the western arm of the city's moat was converted into 12 lanes of freeway and frontage road in the 1960's. As increasing motorization threatened to drain and decant the heart of Utrecht, it found cracks in the old lines of fortification and trapped the city's bus network in eddies on the sides of a new Vredenburg.
Reclamation, as in the rest of the country, started around the 1970's. Oddly, the start was marked by a new parking garage, but by the late 1990's the path car traffic had found through the core was remade into a path for through bike and bus traffic, sparing the rest of the old centre even of that. To the east, it branches north and south of the university, and to the west lies the largest bike parking garages and a limited number of rail crossings to the suburbs.
Into this funnel flow around 30,000 bicycles and 3,000 buses per day, and out into a seemingly ever-expanding train station - with the world's largest bike parking garage and, nearby, its runners up. Meanwhile, the city's been marching cofferdams southward, water pouring back into the old moat, restoring the Catharijnesingel name and releasing the pressure into new parks and public spaces. The massive outdated mall, almost North American in its original relationship to downtown, has been entirely reshaped by these flows - the moat now passing quite visibly through it - into what now just seems to be an entirely appropriate extension of the train station concourse given the latter's new scale.
As the tide of bikes continues rolling in, the feeders to the busiest bike path in the Netherlands are being reworked - the dikes on Voorstraat long having overflowed, cars have been mostly displaced and separation for the bikes is being removed. It's now a dramatic and seemingly unstoppable flood, and Utrecht is better for it.
Hier komt de stroom.

We're back from a sabbatical in the Netherlands and excited to share experiences through a series of videos.
Fietsstraten: Part 4 – Utrecht
The often-overlooked, ancient Dutch capital of Utrecht boasts a truly multi-modal landscape. Its central location makes it an important transportation hub, with high quality light and heavy rail, articulated buses, and world-class cycling facilities, including a number of innovative bike parking structures.

Amsterdam Bouwt Special: Update Sluisbuurt

Dutch Street Organ
Recorded on June 11, 2009, our 47-key Prinsen Street Organ plays for a charity event at the residence of the Italian Ambassador in Washington, DC. This organ was built about 1991 by Arthur Prinsen of Belgium. The front was carved by Albert Timmerman of Holland and decorated by Sarah Kirkpatrick on a Delft Tile theme. The tune is Amsterdam, arranged by Tom Meijer. We can hand crank the organ, but we are lazy today and use a DC motor. Enjoy!
Draaiorgel Het 'Blauwfrontje' in het pakhuis - 52 key Dutch street organ
(HD) Playing a selection of tunes here is the Dutch street organ 'Het Blauwfrontje' (literally: 'the blue front'), which recently came into the ownership of Cerena Roos. It is homed in the Gelderland region of the Netherlands, and is now a regular sight on the streets of the towns in that area.
We were very kindly allowed to go and see and hear it playing in its storage shed (pakhuis), where Cerena Roos, Patrick Versteeg and Johnny van Eijk played us a selection of books, some of which you can now enjoy in this video. The organ plays on the 52 key Limonaire scale.
