Stage Drama ‘Jungle Mangal' Part-II at Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) Islamabad
Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA) staged ‘Jungle Mangal’ on Tuesday here at PNCA auditorium which will be staged for the coming two days as well. The play was specially produced after a well-researched and rehearsed for the public with a aim to promote and project serious and thematic theatre.
‘Jungle Mangal’ is a multi-layered allegorical play intended to educated, inform and entertain, set in a jungle, where animals and birds live in harmony until a monkey’s conspiracy results in the exile of erudite snake and peaceful lion. The monkey then invites a rogue elephant from outside the jungle to help him take over but the plan backfires due to elephant‘s tyrannical tactics. This leaves the animals with a challenge to re-establish peace and order in the jungle. The play appeals to children for its simple messages of peace, struggle and unity but also embarks upon power politics and the relationship between the rulers and the ruled in democratic and dictatorial system of governance.
The play has been written by Dr. Fouzia Farooq who is a researcher and faculty member at History department, Quaid E Azam University, Islamabad and directed by ace director Dr. Waqar Azeem, who is working with PNCA since 1999 and have produced numerous plays all over Pakistan.
The director showed his craftsmanship by dramatization of feelings of the characters in highly professional manner. Depth and details in double story set with accurate use of music, witty sentences and impressive dialogues have made the play worthwhile to come up to the aesthetics taste of the audience.
The story was told by veteran TV and stage artist Afzaal Latifi. The drama maestro Asif Shah and Sabir Khan played the lead character in the play masterfully with numerous professional, amateur and students adding colors to their respective characters. Stage was managed by Ms.Fazia Akhtar while set was designed by Samina Jamshed and Sobia Rehman and costume designed by Irfam Hakeem. Music was directed by Khalid Saddique.
