The Paklenica karst river canyon is a national park in Croatia. It is located in Starigrad, northern Dalmatia, at the southern slopes of Velebit mountain, not far from Zadar. It has two canyons: Mala (Small) and Velika (Big) Paklenica. I filmed the canyons in 4k with my DJI Mavic pro drone.

Nacionalni park Paklenica - jednodnevni hiking kanjonom Mala Paklenica
Paklenica National Park is located slightly inland from the coast of North Dalmatia, situated about 47km north (northeast) from Zadar. The nearest coastal town to the park is Starigrad Paklenica.
The Park is south of the Velebit range of mountains (the largest in Croatia) and covers an area of just under 100 square km. It had a mixture of high peaks with stunning views, deep gorges and beech and pine forests.
The Park is an ideal place to visit for the adventurous – there are several challenging hiking trails, and climbing is also popular here. For those who like things a little more laid-back, there’s more gentle walks available too, with just as much to explore.
Paklenica is well known for its two canyons, Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica. (Big and small Paklenica!) Velika Paklenica is 14km long and between 500 to 800m wide. Mala Paklenica is, unsurprisingly, smaller but is still 12km long and between 400 to 500m wide. The Park’s highest peak is Vaganski vrh, which is 1,757 metres high.
A number of caves also exist in the National Park of various sizes.
The Park is well known for its numerous geological highlights, and contains a wide range of plant and animal species. Amongst the wildlife in the park are various types of bird (including falcons, eagles and owls). There are also deer, wolves, bears, foxes, wild cats, and lynx.
The Park is very suitable for hiking, and a number of trails of different difficulty and length exist. Hiking is probably the best way to explore and really get a feel for the Park. If you’d prefer not to go off on your own, organised excursions are available. For those who are keen to go a little faster, cycling trails are also available.
For the more adventurous, climbing is a very popular activity in the Park, which draws climbers from all over Croatia and further away. Again, there are a number of climbing areas for varying levels of difficulty. Climbing in the Park is really only recommended if you’re an experienced climber, however.
Mala Paklenica canyon is known for its wilderness and preserved nature. It is smaller than Velika Paklenica. The torrent that runs here is much smaller too. The springs of Mala Paklenica and Velika Paklenica are the only permanent streams on southern, karstic slopes of Velebit. Mala Paklenica is 12,5 km long.
The Mala Paklenica usually has water in its bed upstream from the branch trail to Njive Lekine. It rises from Vlaški Grad, also from several springs. A left tributary of the Mala Paklenica, called the Orljača, is also a torrent-flow that dries out in summer. In the damp part of the year the path is impassable when water runs down the gorge.
Eight kilometres downstream from its spring, Mala Paklenica has shaped a two kilometre long canyon with cliffs that reach up to 300 metres in height and are in some places just 10 metres apart or even less.
In ancient times a lot of water fowed from the mountain tops into the gorge digging out, with the help of the material it brought with it, several large half-caves and caves. Some contain dripwater.
In order to preserve the authenticity of petrophilous ornithofauna in Mala Paklenica climbing is strictly prohibited.
This was a one-day hiking (March 23, 2019) through the canyon of Mala Paklenica in Paklenica National Park, Croatia.

The Paklenica karst river canyon is a national park in Croatia. It is located at 44°22′N 15°26′E / 44.367°N 15.433°E / 44.367; 15.433 in Starigrad, northern Dalmatia, at the southern slopes of Velebit mountain, not far from Zadar. It has two canyons: Mala (Small) and Velika (Big) Paklenica. Today there is no water flowing throughout Mala Paklenica. Near the entrance into the Velika Paklenica there is an artificial basement/cave complex that had been built for Josip Broz Tito during the tension between Yugoslavia and the USSR in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Der Nationalpark Paklenica ist ein Nationalpark im Velebit-Gebirgsmassiv 30 km nordöstlich der Stadt Zadar an der kroatischen Adria und ca. 1 km entfernt von Starigrad-Paklenica. Er wurde bereits im Jahre 1949 zum Nationalpark erklärt. Die höchsten Gipfel sind Vaganski Vrh mit 1.757 m. i. J. und Sveto Brdo (1.750 m. i. J.)
Paklenica bedeutet im Kroatischen „kleine Hölle. Der Name entstand vermutlich aufgrund der rauen und steilen Karstfelsen, die zahlreiche versteckte Höhlen beherbergen und von der Sonne angestrahlt die Assoziation mit der Unterwelt erwecken. Eine alternative Erklärung führt den Namen auf die im Park häufig vorkommenden Schwarzkiefer zurück, deren Saft (Paklina) früher zur Imprägnierung von Booten verwendet wurde.
Die Gesamtfläche dieses Nationalparks beträgt 96 Quadratkilometer.

Der Nationalpark bietet Lebensraum für zahlreiche seltene und geschützte Tierarten: Braunbären, Luchse, Schlangenadler, Gänsegeier leben im Nationalpark. Daneben leben auch zahlreiche Reptilien im Velebit: giftige Hornvipern und Kreuzottern kommen im Karst Kroatiens relativ häufig vor. ( source Wikipedia )

Croatia with its beautiful places on the Adriatic is one
popular holiday destination. We like to go there.
By car we drove about 8 hours. Of course we also take breaks. Our holiday trip to Croatia (Starigrad) started here in Bavaria. Then we went over Austria to Slovenia. Here we have fresh fruits and vegetables shopped. Then we went to Croatia's motorway
until almost to our resort. It was a beautiful vacation.
Croatia, we will be back.
Kroatien mit seinen wunderschönen Orten an der Adria ist ein
beliebtes Urlaubziel. Wir sind gern dort.
Mit dem Auto fuhren wir zirka 8 Stunden. Natürlich machten
wir auch Pausen. Unser Urlaubsfahrt nach Kroatien ( Starigrad)
startete hier in Bayern. Dann ging es über Österreich nach
Slowenien. Hier haben wir frisches Obst und Gemüse
eingekauft. Weiter ging es dann auf Kroatiens Autobahn
bis fast zu unserem Urlaubsort. Es war ein wunderschöner Urlaub.

Mala Paklenica Kanjon - Little Paklenica canyon Velebit - Outdoors Croatia
We climb trough the Little Paklenica canyon to the first view of Sveto Brdo peak. Mishka proved she is waterproof. By the driftwood I can tell that there could be more water here, much more!
Special thanks to for supplying our adventures with first class equipment. I took Millet Fitz Roy jacket and Zenith 30 rucksack. Jacket turn out to be worthy of its Patagonian name and showed to be perfect for the sunny lees and strong north gust. I would write also something about the rucksack but I didn’t even notice I was wearing it :)

Kanjon Male Paklenice poznat je po svojoj „divljini“ i očuvanoj prirodi.
Potoci Mala i Velika Paklenice su jedini stalni vodeni tokovi na južnim, krškim obroncima Velebita. Mala Paklenica skromnijih je razmjera od Velike Paklenice, i bujica što teče kroz nju je znatno slabija. Potok Male Paklenice je 12,5 km dug, a izvire ispod Vlaškograda, iz nekoliko izvora. Mala Paklenica u pravilu ima vode u koritu uzvodno od odvojka staze za Njive Lekine, dok u donjem dijelu presušuje. Lijeva pritoka Male Paklenice, Orljača je također bujični tok koji ljeti presušuje. U vlažnom dijelu godine kad kanjonom teče voda, staza je neprohodna.
Osam km nizvodno od izvora Mala Paklenica oblikuje oko 2 km dug kanjon, obilježen strmcima visokim i do 300 m. Kanjon je mjestimično širok svega 10 ili manje metara.
Erozija nekad obilnih voda koje su se slijevale s planinskih vrhunaca u kanjon, uz pomoć materijala koji su sa sobom vode nosila, oblikovala je nekoliko potkapina i špilja većih dimenzija, a u nekima ima vode nakapnice.
Zbog značaja Male Paklenice u očuvanju izvornosti petrofilne ornitofauna penjačke aktivnosti se ovdje najstrože zabranjuju.
