Visiting Amazing Molokai, Island in Hawaii, United States
Molokaʻi or Molokai (/ˈmɒləkaɪ/; Hawaiian: [ˈmoloˈkɐʔi]), often called the Friendly Island, is an island in the Hawaiian archipelago. It is 38 by 10 miles (61 by 16 km) in size at its extreme length and width with a usable land area of 260 square miles (673.40 km2), making it the fifth-largest of the main Hawaiian Islands and the 27th largest island in the United States.[2] It lies east of Oʻahu across the 25-mile (40 km) wide Kaiwi Channel and north of Lānaʻi, separated from it by the Kalohi Channel. Hawaii Insider - Kalaupapa (Molokai)

Hiking Down from “Topside” Molokai to Kalaupapa National Historical Park in Kalawao County, Hawaii
I’m here along Hawaii 470 on the island of Molokai at the trailhead for the Kalaupapa Trail into Kalawao County – the smallest county in the United States by land area and the least populous with an estimated 88 residents. I’m going to be hiking down into the county, which doubles as the Kalaupapa National Historical Park. This is an area set aside in the mid-1800s for patients in Hawaii with Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy).
Altitude at the upper trailhead is 1,726 feet. The Kalaupapa Peninsula is not accessible by road – only by this hiking/mule trail as well as by sea and airplane. As I begin the trek, I can see the enormous seacliffs, or “pali” as they are called in Hawaiian. There is my destination visible down below.
8:05 a.m.: I’ve passed one mile into the descent on the Kalaupapa Trail. Been seeing some National Park Service numbers; trying to figure out what they mean. Think they are numbering the 26 switchbacks on the trail. Haven’t seen all of the switchbacks numbered. Some seem to be missing. Making progress downhill – now at 1,000 feet altitude and passing Switchbacks 12 & 13. This should be the halfway point of the hairpin turns.
8:34 a.m.: I’ve completed all 26 switchbacks. A nice view of the waves crashing ashore 233 feet below me. Hiking through a thick and rocky forest.
8:43 a.m.: I’m just about down to sea level. Beach coming into view on my left. There’s a great look back at the seacliffs towering above the north shore of Molokai island. Trail is now adjacent to the beach.
9:13 a.m.: I have reached the trail’s end in Kalawao County and Kalaupapa National Historical Park. The hike down was 2.61 miles and took me 1 hour 23 minutes (average speed 1.88 mph).

Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline Trail
One of Hawaii's beautiful state parks, the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline features stunning views. Located between Waimanalo and Hawaii Kai along Kalaniana'ole Highway (Hwy 72), the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline attracts many visitors. Amongst them are those eager to catch a glimpse of the migratory humpback whales or Makapu'u Point Lighthouse. The whale watching season along the Ka Iwi State Scenic Shoreline runs from November to March. Over 10,000 whales can be observed close to this shoreline each year, with numbers peaking from January to March. Whales arrive in the waters of the Hawaiian Islands to mate, give birth and nurse their calves. Bring your binoculars to be able to spot the whales better. The hike along the shoreline is a short one (1 mile up, 1 mile back) along the paved, former lighthouse access road. This takes you up to a lookout spot above the lighthouse (the lighthouse itself is not accessible) where you are treated to sweeping views of Koko Head and Koko Crater along Oahu's southeastern shoreline. Offshore islets can be seen from various points along the trail, as well of course, as the 1909 Makapu'u Lighthouse with its red roof burning bright against the deep blue of the sea behind it.
Spectacular Scenery Flying along the North Coast of Molokai Island, Hawaii
This is Mokulele Airlines Flight 744 from Molokai (MKK) to Maui (OGG). Departing at 11:39 a.m., 16 minutes ahead of schedule. Takeoff at 11:42 from Runway 5 to the northeast. There’s 6 passengers aboard this 9-seat Cessna Grand Caravan single-engine propeller aircraft. We turn left and head for the north shore of Molokai.
Fly along some of the world’s highest sea cliffs. Spectacular. Will be flying over the Kalaupapa Peninsula, former home of an isolation zone for patients with Hansen’s disease (also known as leprosy) that is now a national historical park. I hiked down to the peninsula and took a guided tour yesterday.
Mile after mile of amazing sea cliffs. We soar over Kalaupapa. There’s no road access, only a trail used by hikers and mules to access the peninsula from a 1,700-tall cliff. Kalaupapa also has a small airport and receives a sea barge once a year. The peninsula contains Kalawao County, the smallest county in the United States (both by land area and population). Population 88 in the most recent Census update: 7 former patients (ages 77-95) and 79 National Park Service and Hawaii Department of Health workers.
We fly above the peninsula’s tiny volcanic crater. Then the tall sea cliffs on the northeast coast are shrouded in clouds. They reach up to 3,000 feet high! What a phenomenal coastline.
After heavy cloud cover, the eastern end of the island (Halawa Bay) comes into view. Now start the crossing to Maui, which is already in sight across the channel.
