Jackson C Folio Westgarth Story
Westgarth Story
For nearly ninety years the iconic Westgarth Picture Theater has graced High Street, Northcote. As the cities oldest operating movie house it holds a special place in the hearts of Melbournians and has played its part in my own family's story.
The heritage art deco building opened in 1921 has had a number of alterations, upgrades and reincarnations throughout its history but retains the wonderful period features that speak of its past.
My mother grew up in the area and as a child, surrounded by her siblings, spent many Saturday afternoons in the front stalls of the theater, her allowance spent on the price of admission and her favorite lollies.
As she grew up the Flicks at Westgarth held another fascination as it was the destination of choice for her suitors, including my Father, to escort her to for (chaperoned) evenings.
In 1987 the Westgath Theater became the new home of the iconic Valhalla Cinema, showing cult and art house classics. Its themed nights including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Blues Brothers and 24 hour science fiction marathons were very popular with my generation. Friends who were locals at the time tell stories of dancing in the isles and on the stage while the movie played and illicit substances were consumed on the grungy couches up the back.
The Valhalla closed its doors in 1996 and the Westgarth had lean times until 2006 when it was purchased by Palace Cinemas and given yet another update. Two more screens were added along with a digital upgrade to the image and sound systems. These days it is once again a thriving Cinema complex, showing a mix of arthouse and general release films to crowds of patrons of this trendy inner city neighborhood.
In the seven years I have lived in Northcote, my partner, friends and I have spent many nights and wet afternoons in the Westgarth and every time the history of the place flows over me as I contemplate the beautiful surroundings and am pleased to know that a few gems of this kind have weathered the years for future generations to enjoy.
