Le Corbusier & The Palace of Assembly
Le Corbusier was a celebrated architect, painter, urban planner and designer and one of the forerunners in the field of modern architecture. He was born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret-Gris in Switzerland on October 6, 1887. In 1917, he moved to Paris and assumed the pseudonym Le Corbusier. He received many awards in his lifetime and a foundation honors him today.
Throughout the years Le Corbusier developed a set of architectural principles that dictated his technique, called the Five Points of a New Architecture. He followed them closely in his design of the Building of Assembly.
The design was to house governing body of the Punjab and Haryana regions. The two legislative buildings were conceived as free standing curvilinear forms enclosed within a rectilinear shell with an entrance portico on one side and offices on the other.
Le Corbusier pushed for a sense of prefabrication, imitating the assembly line concept in manufacturing. He ensured that the Building of Assembly displayed the characteristics by which the architect had defined modern architecture.
Elements such as support pillars that raise the structure above the ground, a roof terrace, an open floor plan,
an ornamentation-free facade and horizontal windows in strips for maximum natural light.
The interior featured the multi-level spatial contrast between open areas and cell-like offices.

Palace of the Assembly / Parliament Chandigarh, India - Le Corbusier - 1955-1963
Palace of Assembly is a legislative assembly designed by noted architect Le Corbusier and located in Chandigarh, India. It is part of the Capitol Complex, which comprises three buildings — Legislative Assembly, Secretariat and High Court. This building was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016.
After the partition of Punjab, in 1947 following the independence of India, the divided Punjab required a new capital as Lahore was now in Pakistan. Thus Le Corbusier was commissioned by first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru to build a new city of Chandigarh as the capital of Punjab and newly carved state of Haryana. The brief for the design was a city unfettered by the traditions of the past, a symbol of the nation's faith in the future. Subsequently, Corbusier and his team built not just a large assembly and high court building, but all major buildings in the city, and down to the door handles in public offices.
One of Le Corbusier's most prominent buildings from India, the Palace of the Assembly in Chandigarh boasts his major architectural philosophies and style. Le Corbusier's five points of architecture can be found within the design from its open plan to the view of the Himalayan landscape. The program features a circular assembly chamber, a forum for conversation and transactions, and stair-free circulation.
The first of Le Corbusier's architectural ideals is the use of pilotis to lift the structure off of the ground. Reinforced concrete columns are utilized in a grid throughout the Palace of the Assembly and are slightly altered to raise a large swooping concrete form high above the entrance.
This form represents the second point of Le Cobusier's list a free facade. Pilotis allow the form to express the grandiose release of space precisely as Corbusier intended. The other various facades of the building also bestow the free facade via brise-soleil formed from the golden ratio.
Le Corbusier's desire for views is then apparent from all facades. The sun-shading along the offices provides a frame for inhabitants into the surrounding site while the portico opens to the adjacent landscape and the distant Himalayas.
Inside, the Palace of the Assembly houses an open plan structured by the grid of reinforced concrete columns. Again, this structural pattern allows Le Corbusier to manipulated the program freely and place offices and other private programming along the outside of the plan and leave the centre open for public use. Intersecting that open space, is the circular assembly chamber that is contradictory in form to producing good acoustics.
On top of the building lies an accessible roof supported by the pilotis. Providing usable space on the roof of a structure complies with Le Corbusier's fifth ideal of architecture by giving occupants vertical means of connecting to nature and compensating for the habitat removed by the building.
Chandigarh 2 (of 4): The landscape architecture of Le Corbusier's Capitol Complex
See also: Compared to most of the ‘masters of modern architecture’ Corbusier was much more interested in the integration of architecture and landscape. Chandigarh’s Capitol Complex is a major example of abstract modern landscape architecture. But it is also a disaster area.
Chandigarh Assembly Model by UW students in Indian Modernism class of Vikramaditya Prakash
This is a video I made showing the dis-assembly of a model of Le Corbusier's Assembly building in Chandigarh. I have matched it to Sheila Chandra's Om Namah Shiva in which she layers in one additional tracks of her own voice with each rendition of the chant. I felt that the musical concept worked well with the idea of the model. Let me know (hope Sheila Chandra does not mind)! Original photos by Tony Stefan.

High Court Secretariat Tower of Shadow - Chandigarh, India - Le Corbusier
Architect Le Corbusier designed the Capitol Complex, located in Chandigarh, India. It comprises three main buildings — Legislative Assembly, Secretariat and High Court.
The Tower of the Shadows is planned to go between the Palace of Justice and the Parliament building, in the Capitol area. It is a lofty, open-sided hall providing ample shade. In the subdued atmosphere thus created, one can be free to meditate. The building is aligned precisely on the north-south axis, so that it agreeably interrupts the severe symmetry of the enormous square. The north side is entirely open, and the other three faces are furnished with brise-soleil.A ramp leads from this square into the sunken park, the Trench of Consideration.
CAPITOL COMPLEX
The Capitol Complex is Le Corbusier’s most spectacular work. It comprises three buildings :- the Secretariat, the High Court and the Legislative Assembly. the Assembly and the High Court are placed on the opposite ends of the Cross axis, facing each other across a 450 mtrs. Other monuments are Open Hand monument, Martyrs Memoria & Tower of Shadows.
THE HIGH COURT
The building has a rectilinear frame with eight nos. courtrooms located & separated Chief Justice Court Room, and three different colour pillared entrance, extending to the full height of the entrance. The design of the High Court is an embodiment of the climate responsive. This building has a double roof, in which, the upper roof placed over the lower roof was provided, and the space between the two roofs is left open to enable air currents to move. It protection from the sun and monsoon rains.
THE LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY
This structure has a double roof, projecting over an inverted umbrella. and painted in bright colours form the grand entrance to the building. The most impressive part of the Assembly is the Assembly Chamber (Punjab Assembly), which is crowned by a massive hyperbolic tower, extending above the roofline. Similarly, the smaller Council Chamber (Haryana Assembly) conceived in a rectilinear frame is crowned by a pyramidal roof.
THE SECRETARIAT
This is the largest and tallest of the three edifices in the Capitol Complex. It is an eight-storeyed concrete slab.
THE OPEN HAND MONUMENT
One of the most significant monuments planned by Le Corbusier in Chandigarh is the Open Hand. Rising 85 feet high, a giant hand in metal sheets is designed to rotate like a weather cock, and also indicate symbolically the direction of wind. It is also meant to convey a message of peace.
Tower of shadow
The Tower of Shadows is an architectural brilliance intended to demonstrate Le Corbusier’s various theories of sun control.
