Native American Dance at the Moon Palace in Cancun, Mexico
This film features a traditional Mayan dance performance live at the Moon Palace in Cancun, Mexico.
The Maya maintain a strong link to the past through rituals, folklore and family. Fiestas, dancing and traditional music remain important as several festivals and celebrations occur throughout the year. On these special occasions, masks and elaborate costumes are worn by dancers, singers, and musicians.
The Feast of San Luis is celebrated during Easter. Traditional dances such as the Cortes Dance and the Deer Dance are held. The Cortes Dance uses drums, flutes, and rattles to dramatize the combined forces of the church and army during the European conquest. The Deer Dance is accompanied by the marimbas and symbolizes the important relationship between humanity and nature.
Ancient Maya dance is characterized by transformations of human beings into supernatural beings by means of visionary trance. Some think that hallucinogenic drugs or entheogenic medicines were used to put the performer into an altered state of mind. Once in this state of mind the participants were transformed into their wayob or soul companions. These soul companions were depicted through the masks and the costumes people wore in the dance. Some scenes are painted on pottery such as that from the myriad ritual meals of Classic festivals. These vessels depict humans, both kings and nobles, dressed in costumes. Their human faces are shown in cutaway view inside the costumes of the fantastic creatures they have become through the transformation of the dance. Some of these wayob are recognizable as animals like jaguars and birds of prey, but others just look like strange monsters.
For the Maya, dance was a very public affair. It induced visionary trances where either individuals or groups went into an altered state of mind that allowed them to communicate with the other world. Those who were strong enough to travel there, told stories about how the land had things like rivers and trees in this world. Some of the great Maya lords even depicted themselves dancing out over the abyss that leads into the otherworld.
One of the problems researchers have encountered is that the boundaries between humans dancing as supernatural beings and supernatural beings materializing in human rituals. The distinction between the two was never sharply made. Through dance, people became gods and gods became people even if it were only for a moment. It is important to note that these were more than just acts of civic pride or piety. They were considered to be direct connections to the otherworld.

Mexico de mis amores Time Lapse GoPro
Compartan porfa !
This is a little tribute of my lovely Mexico. The entire video has made it with photos I took with a GoPro in time-lapse mode for al least 3 years. Also this is a compilation of places like Mexico City,
Morelos, Queretaro, Hidalgo, and Oaxaca. Everyone in the world know that Mexico is having a really bad time but I think Mexican people always will have something to be proud of. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I did. Please share :)

Barry Bergdoll will present a short lecture on Walter Gropius and Marcel Breuer, arguing that the Bauhaus emigrés did not only have an impact at Harvard; they were types and models for the New World in general, with considerable attention from Latin America in particular. With responses by Michael Hays, Eliot Noyes Professor of Architectural Theory, and Mohsen Mostafavi, Dean and Alexander and Victoria Wiley Professor of Design.
Barry Bergdoll is the Meyer Schapiro Professor of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University and Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at the Museum of Modern Art.

Guadalajara
Guadalajara is the capital and largest city of the Mexican state of Jalisco, and the seat of the municipality of Guadalajara. The city is located in the central region of Jalisco in the Western-Pacific area of Mexico. With a population of 1,495,189 it is Mexico's fourth most populous municipality. The Guadalajara Metropolitan Area includes seven adjacent municipalities with a reported population of 4,328,584 in 2009, making it the second most populous metropolitan area in Mexico, behind Mexico City. The municipality is the second most densely populated one in Mexico; the first being Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl in State of Mexico.
Guadalajara is the 10th largest city in Latin America in terms of population, urban area and gross domestic product. The city is named after the Spanish city of Guadalajara, the name of which came from the Andalusian Arabic wād(i) l-ḥijāra, meaning river/valley of stones. The city's economy is based on industry, especially information technology, with a large number of international firms having manufacturing facilities in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. Other, more traditional industries, such as shoes, textiles and food processing are also important contributing factors.

***
The exhibition «Polyhedral Universe: Women / Perspectives / Proposals» brings together 22 artists of different generations, nationalities and creative sensibilities, who freely show us their means of expression and their particular vision of the world, and their own world. Their works reflect the interests, preoccupations, yearnings and fears of modern-day women in both the private and public spheres. The range and heterogeneous nature of the works on display invite us to ponder the complexity of defining what has come to be known as the «female universe», and warn us against hastily confining art made by women to any one discourse -- of femininity, feminism or identity. It's an exhibition with room for a myriad of theoretical stances and aesthetic practices that reveal the existence of as many women as there are perspectives, and as many perspectives as there are creative approaches.
