U.S. Special Representative Marc Grossman at the Palace of the Nation, Tajikistan

Palace of Nations
Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Please first of all let me say good evening to all of you and thank you for coming. I had the honor to call this evening on the president. I think we had an excellent discussion about Afghanistan and the region. I first wanted to come and thank the President for all of the support that he and Tajikistan and the people of Tajikistan have given to the international effort in Afghanistan. Second, I wanted to report to the president on the activities I have undertaken to create and to try to follow up on Secretary Clinton's speech on February 18 to promote an Afghan-led reconciliation process to bring peace to Afghanistan. And third I wanted to seek the president's advice as we go forward with this effort to promote Afghan-led reconciliation. He was very generous with his time; I thank him for his hospitality and I look forward to your questions.

Navruz Palace&Komsomol Lake:
There is no shortage of high-level meetings and conferences taking place in Dushanbe. During 2014 it was nicknamed “The Diplomatic Capital of Central Asia” based on the high tempo of such events. The spectacular Kohi Navruz (Navruz Palace) hosted the 2014 Shanghai Cooperation Organization Heads of State Summit, which was attended by the presidents of Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Iran.
The incredible building has been designed to reflect Tajik culture and diversity. Its various event halls are incredible to behold. Some have been painted in the ancient Persian manner with murals. Others are hand carved out of wood to reflect national symbols, while another is set with precious stones found across the republic. Murals of the nation’s heroes and poets have been set in a serious of domes around the outside of the building amongst gardens and fountains. The facility has been opened to the general public and even includes a bowling alley.
Dushanbe, Tajikistan - Choikhona Kokhi Navruz Billed as the largest teahouse in the world, the Choikhana Kokhi Navruz contains a cinema, nightclub, and various other venues and is decorated in traditional motifs.
In adjacent Komsomol Park, where Dushanbintsi can enjoy a swim or a game of billiards before tucking into some shashlik and beer, passersby generally say they think the structure is beautiful, though several expect it will not be open to the public, much like the $300-million Palace of the Nation across the lake, or a storied tea house in Dangara, President Imomali Rahmon’s hometown.

It is located near the presidential palace and is visible from afar. It looks very nice and dignified. People usually always come up, look.
DUSHANBE, August 26, 2011, Asia-Plus -- An official opening of a sign showing the national emblem of Tajikistan took place near the newly built Palace of Nation in downtown Dushanbe yesterday evening.
This is one of those monuments that would be common if they are able to maintain themselves in a remote part of goroda. Being near the presidential palace and is visible from afar. Very nice and decent looks.
President Emomali Rahmon and other high-ranking Tajik state officials attended the ceremony of opening of the sign installed on a 45-meter pedestal. Construction of the sign commenced in November last year.
We will recall that a new flagpole erected in Dushanbe in May looks set to enter the Guinness Book of Records. On May 24, residents of the Tajik capital were witnesses of the national flag of Tajikistan rising to the top of a 165-meter flagpole. It was a test flag hoisting, while the flagpole will officially hoist the country's three-color flag, measuring 60 meters by 30 meters, at the end of this month.
Construction of the flagpole began on November 24, 2010, Tajikistan's National Flag Day. The Dushanbe Flagpole is considered to be the tallest flagpole in the world, beating the formerly record holding the National Flagpole in Azerbaijan (162 meters).

But the future leader of Afghanistan is not Mohammad Zaher Shah, it should be the council and the council will decide about the future of Afghanistan.

STORYLINE:
Exiled Afghan leader Burhanuddin Rabbani met Tajik President Emomali Rakhmonov on Wednesday to discuss the US operation against the Taliban, the Islamic militia that rules Afghanistan.
A Tajik government spokesman said Rabbani was feeling slightly ill after the flight.
But he still went ahead with meeting the president in Rakhmonov's residence in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, a poor former Soviet republic that borders northern Afghanistan.
Rabbani is still recognised by the United Nations as the president of Afghanistan.
The exiled leader had a number of issues to discuss with Rakhmonov, including fighting between the Northern Alliance and the Taliban, as well as the growing number of Afghan refugees moving toward the Tajik border.
Rabbani and Rakhmonov are both ethnic Tajiks.
But Tajikistan is in no position to provide much concrete help for the Alliance.
Rakhmonov is wary of any upheaval that could threaten his presidency and has said he does not want Afghan refugees entering Tajik territory.
Rabbani, 61, was driven from Kabul in 1996 and has largely lived in exile since.
Rabbani's government was a collection of warring groups.
The former enemies have united under the banner of the Alliance.

FIFA President Blatter opens Year of Grassroots in Tajikistan
Football development was at the core of the two-day visit of FIFA President Blatter to Dushanbe. There, he officially opened Tajikistan's Year of Grassroots, inaugurated Goal project II -- an artificial turf in Dushanbe Central Stadium -- and laid the first stone of Goal project III, another artificial turf pitch.
A meeting with Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon in Dushanbe's Palace of Nations and a visit to the Super Cup final between FC Ravshan Kulob and FC Istiklol on Tuesday evening kick-started the visit.
We are proud to support activities like Tajikistan's Year of Grassroots, since they make a concrete contribution to further enhancing the popularity of football across the world, said FIFA President Blatter. It's important that such initiatives also make a positive impact on the development of women's football.
When I first visited Tajikistan in 2004, the country was recovering from civil war. Nowadays I'm proud to see how football has played an important role in bringing hope and education to thousands of Tajiks.
A total of 6,000 coaches and 50,000 children are set to benefit from about 100 grassroots courses and 150 festivals that FIFA is set to organise during 2014.

SUMMARY
=======
Tajikistan ( (listen), ; Tajik: Тоҷикистон [tɔdʒikisˈtɔn]), officially the Republic of Tajikistan (Tajik: Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон, Jumhuriyi Tojikiston), is a mountainous, landlocked country in Central Asia with an area of 143,100 km2 (55,300 sq mi) and an estimated population of 8.7 million people as of 2016. It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. The traditional homelands of the Tajik people include present-day Tajikistan as well as parts of Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
The territory that now constitutes Tajikistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the city of Sarazm of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including the Oxus civilisation, Andronovo culture, Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism and Islam. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Achaemenid Empire, Sasanian Empire, Hephthalite Empire, Samanid Empire, Mongol Empire, Timurid dynasty, the Russian Empire, and subsequently the Soviet Union. Within the Soviet Union, the country's modern borders were drawn when it was part of Uzbekistan as an autonomous republic before becoming a full-fledged Soviet republic in 1929.On 9 September 1991, Tajikistan became an independent sovereign nation when the Soviet Union disintegrated. A civil war was fought almost immediately after independence, lasting from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow. Like all other Central Asian neighbouring states, the country, led by President Emomali Rahmon since 1994, has been criticised by a number of non-governmental organizations for authoritarian leadership, lack of religious freedom, corruption and widespread violations of human rights.
Tajikistan is a presidential republic consisting of four provinces. Most of Tajikistan's 8.7 million people belong to the Tajik ethnic group, who speak Tajik (a dialect of Persian). Many Tajiks also speak Russian as their second language. While the state is constitutionally secular, Islam is practiced by 98% of the population. In the Gorno-Badakhshan Oblast of Tajikistan, despite its sparse population, there is large linguistic diversity where Rushani, Shughni, Ishkashimi, Wakhi and Tajik are some of the languages spoken. Mountains cover more than 90% of the country. It has a transition economy that is highly dependent on remittances, aluminium and cotton production. Tajikistan is a member of the United Nations, CIS, OSCE, OIC, ECO, SCO and CSTO as well as an NATO PfP partner.
