The archaeological site of Paleopolis | Myth | Corfu
The name “Paleopolis” (first met in medieval sources (17 c.A.D.) refers to the general area between Garitsa Bay and Kanoni peninsula which was the center of Corfu town in Ancient, Roman and Byzantine periods.
The great biographer Plutarch refers that, the area was initially inhabited in the late 8th century B.C., by the Eretrians of Euboea. Shortly, they were expelled by the Corinthians in 734 BC. It was a period which powerful Greek cities organized expedition in order to establish colonies in the West. The area of Paleopolis seems that was the ideal place of residence as it was enclosed by two natural ports. Paleopolis gradual abandonment began in the 6th century A.D. and was followed by the relocation of the settlement to the area of the present Old Fortress.

Ruins of Saint Kerkyra church are situated in the Paleopoli. The Byzantine basilica was built before 450 A.D., on the ruins of a Roman odeum, by Bishop of Corfu, Jovian. The building was a majestic early Christian basilica, with two aisles on each side of the nave and covered by a timber roof. The church was richly decorated with sculptures and a mosaic floor, and was one of the largest basilicas in Greece.
The Basilica is connected with one of the most well known and popular legends of Corfu; the legend of St. Kerkyra, the first Corfiot woman Martyr. She was the daughter of the Roman Governor of the island at that time and was subsequently put to death around the time of 70 A.D, after her father's orders for becoming a Christian. According to the legend St. Kerkyra is the guardian of the fabulous treasures hidden in the catacombs of the church.
Mon Repos is a villa on the island of Corfu, Greece. It lies south of Corfu City in the forest of Palaiopolis. The villa was built as a summer residence for the English Commissioner Thomas Maitland. It housed a school of fine arts, while in 1834, the park was opened to the public. Empress Elisabeth of Austria stayed in the palace in 1863.
The royal family used it as a summer residence up to the end of monarchy in 1967. The palace became derelict, but was restored in the 1990s. The villa and its gardens are the property of the Corfu municipality, now being used as an archeological museum.
Archaeological site of Paleopolis
On the north side of the island, in Paleopolis, near the Archaeological Museum there is the archaeological site of Paleopolis.
It is a remarkable and very important archaeological site since at this at this place the famous Kaviria Mysteries took place.
The religious and public buildings are mainly the ones preserved in ruins till today. The first excavations at the Sanctuary Area, date from 1863.
Most important archaeological finds are Niki of Samothraki, the Palace with the sacred house, Arsinoio in shaped Rotunda, the Temenos, the Temple, the Theatre, the Altar, the house of tributes, the Stoa, the Fountain of Niki, the cemetery, the building of kings Philip III and Alexander IV and Propylon Ptolemy ΙΙ.
Entering the area, you meet the Palace, a rectangular building where the first stage of initiation into the Mysteries took place.
In sacred house, just behind, was the preparation of those who participated in the ceremony.
In the Sanctuary, whose construction began in 325 BC and was completed in 150 BC, was the initiation of the faithful in the second level, which is called Supervision and was the most important point of the ceremony.
Corfu, Greek Island (Moments of Joy)
Corfu, Greek Island (Moments of Joy)
Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. The island is bound with the history of Greece from the beginning of Greek mythology.
The island's history is laden with battles and conquests. The legacy of these struggles is visible in the form of castles punctuating strategic locations across the island. Two of these castles enclose its capital, which is the only city in Greece to be surrounded in such a way. Corfu was long controlled by Venice, which repulsed several Turkish sieges, before falling under British rule following the Napoleonic Wars. Corfu was eventually ceded by the British Empire along with the remaining islands of the United States of the Ionian Islands, and unification with modern Greece was concluded in 1864 under the Treaty of London
The Kanoni peninsula is only 8 km away from Corfu town or a 30-minute walk along the coastline to the south. It is here you will experience amazing views over the green landscape, the azure blue waters of the sea and the two famous islets complementing that world-wide famous scenery. Here you will find those two tiny islands you often see on pictures: one is the islet of Vlaherna and the other one is Pontikonisi or Mouse Island. The view from Kanoni over these two islands with Corfu in the background is so beautiful.
Surrounded by ancient walls, the ruins of ancient Corcyra (Kerkyra, or Corfu) lie just four kilometers south of Corfu town and the site is open to visitors free of charge year-round. A walk around the grounds reveals a number of sites for visitors, including an old open-air theater still used today, and the famed Mon Repos villa - the summer retreat of Greece's former royal family that today hosts the Paleopolis Archaeological Museum - as well as the ruins of a temple dedicated to Hera, a Venetian fountain and what remains of the 5th century BC Doric temple built in honour of Apollo.
Empress of Austria Elisabeth of Bavaria, also known as Sissi in 1890, built a summer palace in the region of Gastouri to the south of the city, with the powerful mythical hero Achilles as its central theme. The palace, with the neoclassical Greek statues that surround it, is a monument to platonic romanticism. It was named Achílleion after the Homeric hero Achilles. The structure is filled with paintings and statues of Achilles, both in the main hall and in the gardens, depicting the scenes of the Trojan War. The Imperial gardens on the hill look over the surrounding green hill crests and valleys and the Ionian sea. The centrepiece of the gardens is a marble statue on a high pedestal, of the mortally wounded Achilles.

The island is bound up with the history of Greece from the beginnings of Greek mythology. Its history is full of battles and conquests. Ancient Korkyra took part in the Battle of Sybota which was a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War, and, according to Thucydides, the largest naval battle between Greek city states until that time. Thucydides also reports that Korkyra was one of the three great naval powers of fifth century BC Greece, along with Athens and Corinth. Ruins of ancient Greek temples and other archaeological sites of the ancient city of Korkyra are found in Palaiopolis. Medieval castles punctuating strategic locations across the island are a legacy of struggles in the Middle Ages against invasions by pirates and the Ottomans. Two of these castles enclose its capital, which is the only city in Greece to be surrounded in such a way. As a result, Corfu's capital has been officially declared a Kastropolis (castle city) by the Greek government. From medieval times and into the 17th century, the island, having successfully repulsed the Ottomans during several sieges, was recognised as a bulwark of the European States against the Ottoman Empire and became one of the most fortified places in Europe. The fortifications of the island were used by the Venetians to defend against Ottoman intrusion into the Adriatic. Corfu eventually fell under British rule following the Napoleonic Wars, and was eventually ceded to Greece by the British Empire along with the remaining islands of the United States of the Ionian Islands. Unification with modern Greece was concluded in 1864 under the Treaty of London. Corfu is the origin of the Ionian Academy, the first university of the modern Greek state, and the Nobile Teatro di San Giacomo di Corfù, the first Greek theatre and opera house of modern Greece. The first governor of independent Greece after the revolution of 1821, founder of the modern Greek state, and distinguished European diplomat Ioannis Kapodistrias was born in Corfu.

Temenos Didymoticho (Beyazit Mosque)
In the central square of Didymoticho, on the base of the hill, where lies the Byzantine Didymoticho, stands the so-called Bayezid mosque, one of the most majestically Ottoman mosques in Greece.
Founded on the road leading to the main gate of the castle was the center of gravity of the ottoman city that grew out of it.
According to traditions dating back to the era of the Turkish traveler Evliyia Tselebi (16th c.), the construction started by the Sultan Bayezid Yildirim (Thunderbolt), but was not completed because of the problems that the invasion of the Mongols in Asia Minor created at the internal state.
According to the dedicatory inscription above the main entrance, the construction of the mosque commissioned by Sultan Mehmed, son of Bayazid.
The mosque was inaugurated in March 1420.
A second inscription above the side entrance informs us that the reconstruction was undertaken by Kadi of Didymoteicho Seyyid Ali, built by Dogan bin Abdullah and the engineer was Ivaz bin Bayezid. It is therefore property of Mehmet I.

Mon Repos | Myth | Corfu
Mon Repos Estate, part of Paleopolis’ archaeological site, is located on top of Analipsis hill in the area of Kanoni. It is probably the area which is mentioned by Thucydides as “the Μeteors”. It was built between the years 1828-1831 by the English architect Sir George Whitmore, as the summer residence of the English Commissioner, Frederic Adam who gave it as a gift to his beloved Corfiot wife, Diamantina Palatianou. It is a typical example of early 19th century neoclassical architecture in Greece or better a typical example of English Classicism, with large openings and the characteristic tripartite structure. In the following years, Mon Repos was the summer residence of British governors of Corfu until 1864 where Ionian Islands were united to Greece and the estate was conceded to King George I of Greece. He is responsible for palace’s name “Mon Repos” – “My rest

Corfu (, also US: ) or Kerkyra (Greek: Κέρκυρα, romanized: Kérkyra, pronounced [ˈcercira] (listen); Ancient Greek: Κόρκυρα, romanized: Kórkyra, pronounced [kórkyra]; Medieval Greek: Κορυφώ, romanized: Koryfó; Latin: Corcyra) is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. It is the second largest of the Ionian Islands, and, including its small satellite islands, forms the margin of the northwestern frontier of Greece. The island is part of the Corfu regional unit, and is administered as a single municipality, which also includes the smaller islands of Ereikoussa, Mathraki and Othonoi. The municipality has an area of 610,9 km2, the island proper 592,8 km2. The principal city of the island and seat of the municipality (pop. 32,095) is also named Corfu. Corfu is home to the Ionian University.
