Geneva (German: Genf; 375 m above sea level) lies at the Lac de Genève, the southwestern arm of Lake Geneva (French: Lac Léman, German: Genfersee). The Calvin city, as Geneva is also named after the reformer Jean Calvin (1509--1564), lies at the outlet of the Rhone from the lake, which is the second largest lake of Central Europe in terms of surface area. This world city is an important financial center and the home of many international organizations, such as the UNO (United Nations Organization), which has its European headquarters here.
The Palais des Nations (Palace of Nations) or Palais de l'ONU used to be the headquarters of the League of Nations until its closure in 1946. Today, this impressive building houses 34 conference rooms and approx. 2,800 offices.

FACES of GENEVA
The U.S. Mission sponsored the exhibit of Faces of Geneva/Visages de Geneve by Swiss-American photographer Josh Fassbind. The collection celebrates the multiculturalism of Geneva. Josh Fassbind set a goal to picture one individual from each of the 193 United Nations Member States, each person selected their favorite location in Geneva for their portrait. The project, started in October 2010, now includes more than 155 photographs. These portraits are exhibited with the individual's name, country of origin and one word that characterizes the participant's perception of Geneva. The exhibit will be on display for three weeks at the United Nations Palais des Nations 'Mezzanine' in building E. The opening, co-sponsored by the Swiss Mission to the United Nations, attracted a crowd of around 250, many of whom had never previously visited UN Geneva premises.
