Giberto Arrivabene
Giberto Arrivabene was raised by strong female figures in Palazzo Papadopoli, Venice, surrounded by Tiepoli frescoes. The context in which he grew up had a great impact on his unique sense of aesthetics. A love of glass and craftsmanship are at the heart of his work. He creates each piece starting first with a watercolor sketch and handing it second to expert glassmiths from Murano entrusted to engrave designs such as the coat of arms on the Goto piece.

Monument to Virgil, Piazza Virgiliana, Mantua, Lombardy, Italy, Europe
Piazza Virgiliana is a large green area of the city of Mantua, commissioned in 1797 by the French General de Miollis in order to honor the Roman poet Virgil. In Piazza Virgiliana first monument to Virgil was raised at the initiative of General De Miollis who inaugurated March 21, 1801. It consisted of a tall column on top of which was placed a bronze bust of the poet. Its location was at the center of the square Virgiliana as desired by the project architect Pozzo. Round the city under Austrian rule, in order to make possible the military exercises, the column was translocated to the edge, towards Lake Mezzo in the place where there is a monument that currently exists. Finally, in 1821, the column was demolished Virgil to make room Amphitheatre Virgilian designed by architect Joseph Mantua cantons. The bust of Virgil was moved to adorn the Town Hall. The economist and senator of the Kingdom of Italy Giovanni Arrivabene, in 1877, gave impetus to the establishment of a committee to celebrate the upcoming one thousand nine-hundredth anniversary of the death of Virgil. From this association was born the idea to erect a new monument. The Committee, which quote to collect 150,000 pounds in 1883 picked up subscriptions for 26,000 pounds, a figure that enough away in time the initial purpose. Nevertheless, long struggled on the site of construction, until the choice fell on Piazza Virgiliana. In 1919 the amphitheater century that had supplanted the column designed by Paolo Pozzo, was demolished and the space freed the current monument was built in Carrara marble designed by Luca Beltrami on top of which is placed a large bronze statue of work Milanese sculptor Emilio Quadrelli (1863-1925). The final cost over a million lire, obtained by adding the 400,000 pounds collected by the committee consisting of fifty years before, and the contributions of the city of Mantova and the Italian State. Ended work October 16, 1926, the monument to Virgil was officially inaugurated April 21, 1927. At the time of the Gonzaga the current area of the square was invaded by the waters of Lake Mezzo and occupied the harbor of the altarpiece of St. Agnes which derived its name from the monastery, later destroyed, which stood on the bank of the creek . The latter was crossed by an embankment on which was built the church of Santa Maria dell'Argine. By the time the area is impaludò and began to think about making a square of the ancient harbor. During the eighteenth century 's ancona was gradually buried, even using the rubble of buildings citizens subject to demolition and renovation. In order to honor the poet Virgil, the square was named dell'Argine Virgiliana. To complete the work was the French general Sextius Alexandre François de Miollis in 1797, convinced that his project the Municipality. The design of the square was given to the architect Paolo Pozzo who used a French garden squares with four rows of tall trees.

Palazzo Valenti Gonzaga - Mantova

Day FAI-Marathon, October 18, 2015 - Mantua - Visit Palazzo Valenti Gonzaga.
The imposing building was commissioned by Valenti, noble family, think of Lombard, who moved in Mantua already in the fourteenth century and who lived and worked in the city for over 400 years. In 1518 the noble knight Valente Valenti had the honor to bear the insignia and the name of the Marquis Francesco Gonzaga Decree II, Lord of Mantua.
The realization of the historic building was the work of various architects, painters, plasterers, important artists, in particular:
- The facade is the work of Nicholas Sebregondi (1585-1652), who also built Villa La Favorita at the city gates; The masks are a special feature: they are placed under the tables and windows are smaller than those of the eighteenth century. The mask allows you to do away with the subjection to the truth and to escape instead into a dimension of imagination ... agree (masks) in the comedy acting against the normal.
- In 1670 the palace was restored in baroque style by the architect and Flemish painter Frans Geffels (almost contemporary of Rubens 1577-1640) which is depicted twice in the frescoes in the hall of the Prodigal Son in the role of a commoner who, in 'angle on the sidelines, eating and drinking while watching the scene represented there (the Prodigal Son). It 'also interesting to note that, on the set table, there are a beautiful piece of Parmesan cheese and mustard.
- The statue of lust is ascribed to Giovan Battista Barberini, the statue (near a window) has a body of sexuality and indefinable, in his left hand, holding a partridge (then symbol of uncontrollable madness of love) while , with the left foot rests on the head of a crocodile (terrific hunter, also symbol of mating with more females).
The palace was the birthplace Silvio Valenti Gonzaga, the future cardinal and in 1738 and collector of works of art, great uncle Luigi Valenti Gonzaga, another cardinal.
The family Valenti Gonzaga followed the decline of the Gonzaga and the house was eventually abandoned until the nineties, when it underwent a major restoration that brought the building to its former glory. (Source: Web)
I extend a special thank you to the owner Alfonso Rocco Linardi who welcomed us and worked hard to explain the subliminal messages of the frescoes and statues in the hall of the prodigal son.

Piazza Virgiliana is a vast green area of the city of Mantua , commissioned in 1797 by the French general de Miollis in order to honor the Latin poet Virgil. At the time of the Gonzagas the current area of the square was invaded by the waters of Lake Mezzo and occupied by the port of the ancona of Sant'Agnese which derived the name of the homonymous monastery, later destroyed, which stood on the shore of the bay . The latter was crossed by an embankment on which the church of Santa Maria dell'Argine was built .
In time, the area became impaludal and we began to think of making a square in the old port. During the eighteenth century the ancona was gradually buried also using the rubble of the city buildings being demolished and restructured. In order to honor the poet Virgilio , piazza dell'Argine was called Virgiliana. To complete the work was the French general Sextius Alexandre François de Miollis in 1797 , who convinced the Municipality of his project. The design of the square was entrusted to the architect Paolo Pozzo who took as a model the French garden squares with four rows of tall trees.

Places to see in ( Mantova - Italy ) Castello San Giorgio
Places to see in ( Mantova - Italy ) Castello San Giorgio
The castle of San Giorgio is one of the most representative monuments of the city of Mantua and is part of the Reggia dei Gonzaga. Built on the ruins of the church of Santa Maria di Capo di Bove from 1395 and completed in 1406 on commission of Francesco I Gonzaga and designed by Bartolino da Novara , the castle of San Giorgio is a square-shaped building consisting of four corner towers and surrounded by a moat with three doors and relative drawbridges , aimed at defending the city.
The architect Luca Fancelli , in 1459 on the recommendation of the Marquis Ludovico III Gonzaga , who freed the rooms of the Corte Vecchia for the Council promoted by Pius II , restructured the castle that definitively lost its primitive military and defensive function. For many years the manor house was the residence of Isabella d'Este , wife of Francesco II Gonzaga , one of the most famous noblewomen of the Renaissance . Isabella wanted at the court numerous artists and humanists of the time, such as Andrea Mantegna , Perugino , Leonardo da Vinci , Ludovico Ariosto andBaldassarre Castiglione , making Mantua one of the major European courts and artistic and literary center. In the prisons of the castle the condottiere Paolo Vitelli was closed again in 1496 , taken prisoner by Francesco II Gonzaga. The castle, along with other adjacent buildings, remains the prince's residence for about a century, until the time when Guglielmo Gonzaga will move his apartments into the restored Old Court.
In 1810 the Tyrolean patriot Andreas Hofer was imprisoned in the prisons of the manor before being executed. Starting from 1815 with the Austrian occupation of the city, the castle became the maximum security prison in which the opponents were closed. From 1852 in the castle were enclosed the Martyrs of Belfiore and some patriots attached to them ( Ciro Menotti , Teresa Arrivabene ). The earthquake of Emilia in 2012 caused structural damage to the building.
The rooms of the castle :
Sala dei Soli , located on the ground floor and embellished with frescoes of the fifteenth century , was transformed by Giulio Romano in 1531 and then by Giovan Battista Bertani
Sala degli Stemmi , which is accessed by a spiral staircase
Salone degli Affreschi , parallel to the Sala degli Stemmi
Sala delle Sigle , Isabella d'Este's wedding room
Saletta della Grotta , part of the Isabella d'Este apartment in the castle
Sala delle Armi , in which Giulio Romano painted 12 heraldic crests
Chapel of the castle , built by Bertani in 1563
Middle Room
Hall of the Frieze
Sala delle Cappe , with a barrel vault
Sala dello Zodiaco , with traces of paintings by Giulio Romano , where Pietro Frattini , one of the Martyrs of Belfiore and Ciro Menotti , was held prisoner
Camera degli Sposi .
The Camera Picta (Camera degli Sposi), a wonderful room on the main floor of the north-eastern tower of the castle of San Giorgio, is the work of Andrea Mantegna . The Mantegna has made it over a period of nine years, from 1465 (date engraved on the wall) to 1475 (date engraved on the commemorative plaque at the entrance of the hall), and readjusted the narrow space of the cubic room with vaults on lunettes in a succession of reality and fiction giving the environment an en plein air atmosphere (thus giving an idea of being in a false loggia). The space of each wall of the room was divided by the artist into three openingsthat transmit to the spectator, through wide arches, bucolic landscapes and curtains moved by the wind a strong antithesis with the reduced architectural environment. The frescoes have been made either dry (north wall, this technique allows a meticulous care of details) or fresh (south wall, the fresco obliges the painter to opt for a more synthetic taste). There are two painted scenes depicting members of the Gonzaga family , the Scene of the Encounter and the Scene of the Court . With them Mantegna pays tribute to the patrons that so many clients have procured for him. In the room, you can not stand more than 5-10 minutes because (using the technique of dry painting) the humidity and the exhaled air
