Places to see in ( Gorizia - Italy )
Gorizia is a town and comune in northeastern Italy, in the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is located at the foot of the Julian Alps, bordering Slovenia. It is the capital of the Province of Gorizia and a local center of tourism, industry, and commerce. Since 1947, a twin town of Nova Gorica has developed on the other side of the modern-day Italian–Slovenian border.
The entire region was subject to territorial dispute between Italy and Yugoslavia after World War II: after the new boundaries were established in 1947 and the old town was left to Italy, Nova Gorica was built on the Yugoslav side. Taken together, the two towns constitute a conurbation, which also includes the Slovenian municipality of Šempeter-Vrtojba. Since May 2011, these three towns are joined in a common trans-border metropolitan zone, administered by a joint administration board.
Gorizia is located at the confluence of the Isonzo and Vipava Valleys. It lies on a plain overlooked by the Gorizia Hills. Sheltered from the north by a mountain ridge, Gorizia is protected from the cold bora wind, which affects most of the neighbouring areas. The town thus enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate throughout the year, making it a popular resort. The name of the town comes from the Slovene word gorica 'little hill', which is a very common toponym in Slovene-inhabited areas.
Alot to see in Gorizia such as :
The castle, built within the medieval walls, was once the seat of the administrative and judiciary power of the county. It is divided into the Corte dei Lanzi (with foundings of a high tower demolished in the 16th century), the Palazzetto dei Conti (13th century) and the Palazzetto Veneto. The Lanzi were the armed guards, the term being an Italian form of Landsknecht. The palatine chapel, entitled to Saint Bartholomew houses canvases of the Venetian school of painting and traces of Renaissance frescoes. There is also a Museum of the Goritian Middle Ages.
The Cathedral (originally erected in the 14th century), like many of the city's buildings, was almost entirely destroyed during World War I. It has been rebuilt following the forms of the 1682 edifice, a Baroque church with splendid stucco decoration. A Gothic chapel of San Acatius is annexed to the nave.
The church of Gorizia of St. Ignatius of Loyola, built by the Jesuits in 1680–1725. It has a single nave with precious sculptures at the altars of the side chapels. In the presbytery Christoph Tausch painted a Glory of St. Ignatius in 1721.
The Palazzo Attems Petzenstein (19th century), designed by Nicolò Pacassi.
Saint Roch's Church.
Palazzo Cobenzl, today seat of the archbishops.
The Counts of Lantieri's house, which housed emperors and popes in its history.
The Palazzo Coronini Cronberg, including an art gallery.

Gorizia is a small city with a great history where you can breathe the Habsburg Mitteleuropean atmosphere.
You can start your trip from Victory Square, the city centre.
After visiting the historic center, Piazza della Vittoria and the Castle by foot, I suggest to use the car to visit the rest of the city.
Thanks to its special geographical location, it has always been culturally influenced by a combination of different civilisations: Latin, Slavic and Germanic.
I loved its timeless atmosphere typical of border regions.
In Gorizia you will breathe the suspended atmosphere typical of a border city: in the Piazza Transalpina, which until 2004 was physically divided by a wall, you will walk with one foot in Italy and one foot in Slovenia. Thanks to its special geographical location, it has always been culturally influenced by a combination of different civilizations: Latin, Slavic and Germanic. Situated on the eastern border, it has always played a major role in Central Europe. Today its streets, architecture and parks are evidence of the important history of this town.
The medieval castle is the heart and symbol of the town. From here, the view sweeps over gentle expanses of hills and all of Gorizia, where medieval, Baroque and 19th century architectures harmoniously co-exist. The Hapsburg bourgeoisie loved to stroll through the streets of the town centre, not surprisingly the town was called the Nice of the Hapsburgs.
Among enchanting parks, such as the Piuma Park on the Isonzo river, the Park of Palazzo Coronini Cronberg (with trees from all over the world) and the Viatori Park, culture is very important too: many museums worth visiting, some of which are peculiar and curious, such as the Province Museums with the Museum of Fashion and of Applied Arts, the First World War Museum and the Archaeological Collection, the Museum of the Middle Ages in Gorizia inside the Castle. Among the city's many historical buildings Palazzo della Torre, Palazzo Attems Petzenstein and Palazzo Werdenberg - Biblioteca Statale Isontina (State Library) stand out.
The history of Gorizia's Jewish community is told at the Synagogue Museum Gerusalemme sull'Isonzo of Via Ascoli.
On the city's hills, in the hamlet of Oslavia, you will find the imposing Ossuary of Oslavia, which contains the mortal remains of Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers who died during the First World War

Vipava Cross (castle)
Vipava Cross (castle) Kreutz 16. century Vipava Cross, formerly of Sv. The cross is as naseldbina for the first time in writing mentioned in the year 1030, due to the then existing church of st. anne. Of the cross. The hill on which lies the village was inhabited already in the predrimskih times. In the year 1482 are naseldbino because of the threatening Turkish danger enhanced with a ring of defensive walls. The castle is first directly mentioned in the year 1535, although you can sometimes found information that has been pozidan already at the end of 15. century, along with a walls - utrjenim Taborom. The subsequent hardening of the settlement will accelerate the war between the Habsburžani and the Venetians. Habsburžani, who succeeded included house, set grofu Vitu della Torre, son of the first svetokriškega of count Ivan Feba. Vitov son of Franc, the German nickname of the count of Thurn from the Sv. The cross, then, when it became the goriška provincial district governor, in 1547 sold the gospoščino its preferably to a relative't from pliberške branch of the counts of Thurnov. In 1589 enters the castle again in the possession of svetokriških Torrejev - Thurnov, they were founded in 1605 sold grofom Attemsom that they keep it in nasledjih centuries. When in 1809 the Vipava valley, occupied by the French, are Attemsi Cross for some time left and later again returned. Soon after returning they started the estate odprodajati. Last graščak Kristijan Karel Nikolai Attems in the year 1842, when he moved to Friuli, a building left. The year 1885 is only about one sixth of the redeemed of the then school of stocks - the fund and prezidal in the school, which still operates. Svetokriški castle is pozidan after the Italian vzorih that they take their initiative directly from the ancient traditions. It is designed as a low, someren renaissance kastel with four one-storey residential tracts and the four mighty round towers - rondelami at the corners, which with its height not exceeding the height of the rest of the construction. Such a design of the net and in sorazmerjih consistent renaissance kastelne building does not meet more anywhere in Slovenia. The castle, which is given to us in the wake of its solid towers - on the ground floor have a thickness of about two metres - shows on the outside as the typical fortress at the entrance in the courtyard look like a mansion, since the wings with the classification and character of its windows and other openings does not utrdbenega character; on the contrary, all the talk about the comfort and splendor of life of its former inhabitants.
