Isola Bella: the story
In 1632 Carlo III Borromeo decided to start building a palace for his wife Isabella d'Adda, chose a nude island placed in front of Stresa, Verbano where it flows into the Gulf of the river Toce. The work suffered a setback in mid-seventeenth century because of the plague developed in the duchy of Milan, but were resumed with renewed vigor by the sons of Charles III: Cardinal Giberto III (1615-1672) and especially V italiano VI ( 1620-1690). This had the merit to entrust the completion of the work of the famous Roman architect Carlo Fontana.
The opening of the gardens instead of 1671, with Charles IV (1657-1734) scholar and art lover himself. In the late eighteenth / early nineteenth century, the palace was visited by Napoleon and Josephine de Beauharnais and Princess of Wales, Caroline Amelia of Brunswick.

Lago Maggiore - Isola Bella

The Borromeo palace is a building seventeenth-century site in ' Isola Bella on Lake Maggiore (municipality of Stresa , province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola ), whose gardens stretching down to the southern tip of the islet. It still belongs to the Borromeo family. Some land was purchased on Isola Bella (then Lower Island) by Julius Caesar III Borromeo in the sixteenth century .
The Count and Marquis Carlo III Borromeo gave the island the name of his wife, Isabella d'Adda . I will buy other land and began construction of the building in 1632 . At the same time, between 1631 and 1634 , by the architect Giovanni Angelo Crivelli, the general layout of the gardens was created, with the idea of giving the island the shape of a ship. To make the terraces, a large amount of land was transported with the boats, which covered the rocky soil of the island. On the west side, the Torre della Noria was erected, site of the hydraulic systems necessary for irrigation. The garden housed oranges, lemons, boxwoods and cypresses, to which crops of useful plants were mixed.
Between 1652 and 1690 the son of Charles III, Vitaliano VI , with the support of his brother, Cardinal Giberto Borromeo , had the addition by his architect, Francesco Castelli , the stone decorations: balustrades, statues, obelisks, vases . The works in the building were also followed by the builders Francesco Maria Richini and Carlo Fontana . On the ground floor a series of rooms open to the garden were decorated in grotto.
In the garden it was renounced to the construction of the central Casino that had been planned and the San Rocco oratory was demolished, building in its place a system of underground chambers. In 1675 the Diana's atrium, with two slightly staggered curved stairways, was built to solve the axial lack of alignment between the building and the garden.
With Vitaliano VIII ( 1792 - 1874 ), an expert in botany , species of exotic plants, greenhouses and a new water pumping system were introduced in the gardens. The palace was completed by prince Vitaliano X ( 1892 - 1982 ) who finished the north façade and the connected pier and built the large hall on the basis of the original design.

Italie Invisibili | CLIP Arcipelago Borromeo e Isola Bella
