Venice (English /ˈvɛnɪs/; Italian: Venezia [veˈnɛttsia] ( listen)[1] alternative obsolete form: Vinegia; Venetian: Venexia [veˈnɛsja]; Latin: Venetiae; Slovene: Benetke) is a city in northeastern Italy sited on a group of 117 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges.[2] It is located in the marshy Venetian Lagoon which stretches along the shoreline, between the mouths of the Po and the Piave Rivers. Venice is renowned for the beauty of its setting, its architecture, and its artworks.[2] The city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.[2]
Venice is the capital of the Veneto region. In 2009, there were 270,098 people residing in Venice's comune (the population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 60,000[3] in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazioni (roughly equivalent to parishes or wards in other countries) of Mestre and Marghera; 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), with a total population of 1,600,000. PATREVE is only a statistical metropolitan area without any degree of autonomy.
The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who inhabited the region by the 10th century BC.[4][5] The city historically was the capital of the Republic of Venice. Venice has been known as the La Dominante, Serenissima, Queen of the Adriatic, City of Water, City of Masks, City of Bridges, The Floating City, and City of Canals. Luigi Barzini described it in The New York Times as undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man.[6] Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities.[7]
The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain, and spice) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history.[8] It is also known for its several important artistic movements, especially the Renaissance period. Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi.

Francesco Guardi. View of the Giudecca Canal and the Zattere
This canvas is a good example of a genre that became very popular in the eighteenth century, particularly among Venetian artists: the veduta, or view. Paintings of this sort were commissioned or purchased by English travellers or art-lovers. Francesco Guardi, who was strongly influenced by Canaletto's idealised views of the city, generally made preparatory drawings for his paintings; the Museo Correr in Venice holds a large collection of his sketches and notes. Here, Guardi provides a view of the Giudecca Canal, the waterfront promenade of Zattere, the churches of San Biagio and Santa Marta, and the Euganean Hills rising up in the distant background, behind the island of San Giorgio in Alga. The use of light and colour are characteristic of eighteenth-century Venetian painting.

Postcards from Venice: Canaletto paintings on show in London
(18 May 2017) LEADIN:
While contemporary art takes over Venice, as part of the Italian city's Biennale, a new London show is looking back to simpler times.
Buckingham Palace's Queen's Gallery is opening a new exhibit that explores the work of 18th century Venetian painter Canaletto.
STORYLINE:
Busy canals, gliding gondolas and towering architecture, it's unmistakably Venice.
Buckingham Palace's Queen's Gallery is staging a new exhibit dedicated to 18th century Venetian painter Giovanni Antonio Canal - or Canaletto - best known for these dramatic images of his home city.
There are over 200 paintings, drawing and prints.
The exhibit includes a series of 12 paintings of Venice's Grand Canal, which together make almost a complete journey down the bustling waterway.
Canaletto's paintings of Venice have defined the image of Venice for us, says curator Rosie Razzall.
Even today people go to the city and recognise sites from Canaletto's paintings, whether they've seen the paintings or whether they've seen them on reproductions on postcards or tea towels or other tourist souvenirs. And the city is well known to us through Canaletto's paintings.
Canaletto's dramatic works of Venice's busy waterways became particularly popular among wealthy Grand Tourists, groups of mainly wealthy tourists conducting cultural journeys across Europe.
They were drawn to the city by its numerous cultural attractions and often wanted a piece of it to take home.
In a time before postcards or smartphone selfies, Canaletto's paintings and prints became a popular option.
That meant he was allowed to take certain artistic liberties with Venice's geography in order to create prettier pictures.
Canaletto's paintings look like they show real scenes, but the thing about him was that he was always manipulating the reality and bringing together buildings to create a dramatic, almost theatrical painting, explains Razzall.
What he created was something for the tourists to take home, says art critic Estelle Lovatt.
Today you'd buy a postcard, but then there were no postcards. So, you would commission Canaletto to do an oil paintings and if you couldn't afford that, he would also give you the opportunity to purchase a print which was of course much smaller, much cheaper, you could roll it up, put it in your suitcase.
The Venetian painter is long thought to have used a camera obscura to achieve such drawing accuracy.
The device helps artists trace images formed by rays of light passing through a box.
But in preparation for this exhibit, experts used infrared photographs of these six Canaletto drawings to view the preparatory carbon pencil drawings beneath.
They showed how, rather than using the simple device, Canaletto set out the buildings with painstaking accuracy, plotting chimneys, arches and windows.
The use of the camera obscura might be seen as a kind of cheat and Canaletto, he's just recording, just tracing down what he sees in front of him, says Razzall.
But these infrared images show that he was actually very carefully putting together these sheets. So, he's using his creative imagination and expression to make these drawings and paintings.
The exhibit also includes works by Canaletto's contemporaries, exploring how they captured the allure of Venice.
In 1762, a young King George III purchased almost the entire collection of art collector and Canaletto's agent, Joseph Smith.
That acquisition now means Britain's Royal Collection Trust owns what's thought to be the largest collection of works by Canaletto.
It's a demonstration of Canaletto's business sense, but also his background in stage and theatre design.
'Canaletto & the Art of Venice' runs at Buckingham Palace's Queen's Gallery 19 May - 12 November.
