Palazzo dei Diamanti, Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy
Palazzo dei Diamanti is a palace located on Corso Ercole I d'Este 21 in Ferrara, northern Italy. It is one of the most famous palaces in Italy, as well one of the most influential examples of European Renaissance architecture. Designed by Biagio Rossetti upon commission by Sigismondo d'Este, brother of Duke Ercole I d'Este, in 1492, it was built between 1493 and 1503. Used as a residential home by the Este family and then, starting in 1641, by the Villa marquees, in 1832 the palace was acquired by the municipality of Ferrara to house the National Gallery of Art and the Civic University. The most striking feature is the bugnato of the exterior walls: it consists of some 8,500 white (with pink veins) marble blocks carved to represent diamonds, hence its name. The positioning of the diamonds varies in order to maximize the light reflected off the building, creating quite the visual effect. The palace is also well known for its candelabras and the phytomorphic corner motifs. Inside, it has a typical Renaissance courtyard with a cloister and a marble well; the latter is a particular characteristic typical of gardens in Ferrara. The main floor of the Palace houses the National Art Gallery of Ferrara, with paintings from the Ferrara school from the Middle Ages up to the 18th century. The oldest paintings are large frescoes (Triumph of sant'Agostino by Serafino da Modena) and wooden panels with gold-leaf backgrounds, such as the Madonna and Child by Gentile da Fabriano. The main artists from the 15th century are Cosmè Tura (Giudizio and the Martyrdom of san Maurelio), Ercole de' Roberti, Vicino da Ferrara and Michele Pannonio, who each have several works here. From the Este family collections, there are works by various artists, one of whom is Andrea Mantegna (Cristo con l'animula della Madonna). There are also two works by unidentified artists from the collection of the Marquee Leonello d'Este at the Belfiore Palace. The 16th century is represented by the master of classicism Garofalo; there are many works here by this artist, one of the most noteworthy being Pala Costabili, done in collaboration with Dosso Dossi. The period of mannerism is represented by Bastianino, who uses a technique similar to that of Michelangelo in his works. Other artists present are Vittore Carpaccio, Ortolano, Manieri, Panetti, Coltellini, Maestro degli Occhi Spalancati and many more. From September 11, 2011 to January 8, 2012, Palazzo dei Diamanti will host The Crazy Years dedicated to the extraordinary artistic work that characterized Paris from the end of the Great War to the 1930s. There will be works by, among others, Monet, Matisse, Mondrian, Picasso, Braque, Modigliani, Chagall, Duchamp, De Chirico, Miró, Magritte and Dalí. There will be paintings on display as well as sculptures, theatre costumes, photographs, ready made art, and sketches from the most important museums and private collections in the world. From October 13th 2012 to January 13th 2013, visitors will have the opportunity to discover the masterpieces from the collections of the Museo Boldini and the other modern and contemporary art galleries of Palazzo Massari.

The park takes its name from the adjoining building erected at the end of the sixteenth century and is the largest of the public gardens within the city walls. The surface is about 4 hectares. Designed in 1780 by the Ferrara architect Luigi Bertelli for the Marquis Camillo Bevilacqua, this important garden was remembered for the numerous sculptures that adorned it and for the great variety of citrus and flowering plants that perfumed its magnificent paths.
In the mid-nineteenth century the Counts Massari acquired the building by modifying the whole complex as an English park. The design of the flower beds is that of the nineteenth century and many trees are more than centuries old: in addition to the two Cedars of Lebanon at the entrance, there are some yews, an imposing ginkgo and the gigantic oaks at the entrance to Corso Ercole I d'Este. Since 1936 it has been owned by the Municipality of Ferrara, which has turned it into a public park.

Places to see in ( Ferrara - Italy ) Castello Estense
The Castello Estense or castello di San Michele is a moated medieval castle in the center of Ferrara, northern Italy. It consists of a large block with four corner towers. On 3 May 1385, the Ferrarese people, driven to desperation by taxes and flooding that had brought ruin upon them, took themselves to the Marquis Niccolò II d'Este’s palace to ask the advice of Tommaso da Tortona, the high official held to be responsible for this grave situation. Nicolò tried to calm the revolt all day, but by the evening it was clear that the people's spirits were getting more and more angry and that the very safety of the Estensi was endangered. The order was therefore given to summon the disgraced Tommaso, who was given confession and communion and then given to the crowd, who literally tore him to pieces.
This episode, which resulted later in the death of the leaders of the revolt, convinced the Marquis that the family’s palace (which is now the Palazzo Comunale) was insufficient to guarantee the security of the nobility in the event of riots. He therefore ordered the construction of a defensive fortress on the north side of the Palazzo, entrusting the project to the architect Bartolino da Novara. He used a pre-existing tower (the Torre dei Leoni), which was part of the defensive walls, at that period very much to the south of the present ones, running, roughly speaking, along the line of the present Corso Giovecca and Viale Cavour. The tower was joined by curtain walls to another three newly built for this project. Between the Este residence and the new fortress was built an aerial passageway (perhaps in wood) to allow people to flee from one to the other.
As the city grew the city walls were moved, so the defensive function of the castle became less important and apartments began to be built in its interior, which was by now considered an annex to the court palace. From the time of Ercole I d'Este on, there are many records of construction of apartments, and of their enlargement and enhancement. The definitive transformation works were ordered by Ercole II after a fire in 1544, which had damaged the previous accommodation. The architect Girolamo da Carpi gave the castle the external appearance which can be still seen today, although the interior has been remodelled several times across the ages. After the departure of the Este to Modena, the castle became the residence of the Papal Legate who administered the Ferrarese territory as civil governor (for a maximum term of four years). There were few changes made to the structure of the building, the most obvious being the increase in height of the north ravelin (the room which currently houses the cafeteria).
In 1860 Ferrara was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. The castle, now state-owned, was bought for 70,000 liras in 1874 by the Province of Ferrara that utilized the structure as headquarters of the Prefecture. In the subsequent decades, the castle underwent many small restoration projects, especially between 1910 and 1930, when some very questionable attempts were done. During World War II it was severly damaged by Allied aerial bombing, thus it was partially reconstructed in 1946.
On the outside, the castle essentially presents the appearance given to it by Girolamo da Carpi in the second half of the 16th century. Surrounded by a moat, it has three entrances with drawbridges fronted by brickwork ravelins. The fourth entrance, to the east, was sacrificed to make room for the kitchens.
At the bottom, the appearance of the building still recalls a mediaeval fortress, but higher up, da Carpi replaced the battlements with elegant balconies in white stone (resting on series of corbels), making it higher again by constructing a higher storey, covered by a skew roof. The towers were improved and made more graceful with roof terraces.
The Ducal Chapel is a little room with elegant geometric lines, destinated to private praying. An old tradition argued that Renée de France - wife of Duke Ercole II of Este who had Calvinist sympathies - ordered this particular decoration, without sacred images. On the walls, coated all over with precious polychrome marbles, no sacred image - either painted or in mosaic - is actually represented, as one would at least expect in the small niches.

Places to see in ( Ferrara - Italy ) Corso Ercole I dEste
Places to see in ( Ferrara - Italy ) Corso Ercole I dEste
Corso Ercole I d'Este is a historic street in Ferrara and one of the most important in the city. It is the main artery of the Addizione Erculea , commissioned by the Duke of Ferrara Ercole I d'Este and commissioned by Biagio Rossetti . It presents an admirable perspective for the alternation of facades of palaces, mostly Renaissance with curtains of gardens; ends in two rows of poplars, from which the ancient name of corso dei Piopponi. It was in ancient times also called Via degli Angeli, from the church dedicated to S. Maria degli Angeli that was along its course.
The works of the urban planning work began in 1492 and finished around 1510 and provided for the direct unification between the southern part of the historic center where the Estense Castle is located with the northern part of the walls up to the Porta degli Angeli. The long avenue that was thus created took the name of Viale degli Angeli and at the crossroads with a transversal street coming from the east it formed the Quadrivio degli Angeli formed by the Palazzo dei Diamanti , Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati and Palazzo Turchi di Bathroom.
The Quadrivio degli Angeli is still present today and the ancient Viale degli Angeli has been renamed Corso Ercole I d'Este. Today the avenue is entirely pedestrian except for a very short stretch that goes from via Arianuova to corso Biagio Rossetti.
In addition to the Palazzo dei Diamanti, there are Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati and Palazzo Turchi di Bagno, the Monte di Pietà palace , the Viale della Certosa leading to the Certosa di Ferrara , the Liceo Scientifico citizen A. Roiti, the Trotti palaces Mosti Estense and Giordani, at the intersection with via Arianuova and via Guarini, offices of the Department of Law of the University of Ferrara and of the Center for documentation and studies on the European Communities, and an entrance to the Massari Park. Palazzo Gulinelli is located in the upper part of the Corso, in the part towards the Castle.
The street has lent itself as a film set for several important productions. Here were made some shots of the film The Garden of Finzi-Contini by Vittorio De Sica , and some sequences of the episode included in Beyond the clouds , by Michelangelo Antonioni , codirect with Wim Wenders . It then appears in films by Florestano Vancini , Giuliano Montaldo and Gianfranco Mingozzi

Restauro e ampliamento Diamanti e Massari
