Foligno is an ancient town of Italy in the province of Perugia in east central Umbria, on the Topino river where it leaves the Apennines and enters the wide plain of the Clitunno river system. It is located 40 kilometres (25 miles) south-east of Perugia, 10 km (6 mi) north-north-west of Trevi and 6 km (4 mi) south of Spello. While Foligno is an active bishopric, one of its civil parishes, San Giovanni Profiamma, is the historical site of the former bishopric of Foro Flaminio, which remains a Latin Catholic titular see.
Foligno railway station forms part of the main line from Rome to Ancona, and is the junction for Perugia; it is thus an important rail centre, with repair and maintenance yards for the trains of central Italy, and was therefore subjected to severe Allied aerial bombing in World War II, responsible for its relatively modern aspect, although it retains some medieval monuments.
Of its Roman past no significant trace remains, with the exception of the regular street plan of the centre. Other resources include sugar refineries and metallurgical, textile, building materials and paper and timber industries. After the war, the city's position in the plain and again its rail connections have led to a considerable suburban spread with the attendant problems of traffic and air pollution, as well as a severe encroachment on the Umbrian wetlands. Foligno is on an important interchange road junction in central Italy and 2 km (1 mi) away from the centre of the city there is the Foligno Airport.

Adjacent to the palace is located Palazzo Orfini, former home of Emiliano Orfini , the printer who printed the first edition of the Divine Comedy in Italian. The Cathedral, dedicated to San Feliciano, the patron saint of the city, is neo-baroque style. Do not miss inside the Diocesan Cathedral Museum and Crypt of San Feliciano.
One of the best things to do in Foligno is visit the Municipal Library in the Piazza del Grano. The church of San Giacomo, made in the Gothic style in 1402 and placed in the square, is characterized by red and white stripes , a portal and a cloister. LA FASCIA OLIVETATA CONVEGNO - ROTARY INTERCLUB
il 31 ottobre alle ore 16,00, a Foligno, presso la Sala Rossa di Palazzo Trinci si è tenuto il convegno che ha visto protagonisti i comuni di Trevi, Assisi, Spoleto, Spello, Foligno e Campello sul Clitunno.
Un lavoro di squadra che ha permesso ai comuni in questione l’ingresso del territorio umbro nel prestigioso registro nato per “certificare” e tutelare i paesaggi rurali più belli e preziosi d’Italia. (Fascia Olivetata Pedemontana di Assisi-Spoleto al Registro nazionale dei Paesaggi Rurali Storici del Mipaaf).
La candidatura, presentata 2 anni fa, è stata accolta dal Ministero per le Politiche Agricole ed oggi i comuni possono festeggiare questo importante traguardo.
Il convegno su FASCIA OLIVETATA PEDEMONTANA ASSISI-FOLIGNO-SPOLETO si è tenuto il 31 Ottobre e presieduto dai Sindaci dei comuni interessati e i Presidenti dei Rotary Clubs organizzatori.
Più nello specifico erano presenti:
Introduzione: Dott. Bernardino Sperandio, Sindaco di Trevi e coordinatore dei 6 comuni interessati: “Prospettive per la conservazione e sviluppo del paesaggio olivato”.
Prof. Primo Proietti – Università degli Studi di Perugia : “Funzioni ambientali dell’olivicoltura produttiva umbra”
Prof. Antonio Boggia – Università degli Studi di Perugia : “Servizi ecosistemici della fascia olivetata”
Arch. Diego Zurli – Regione Umbria – Assessorato all’assetto del territorio: “Il paesaggio della fascia olivata come palinsesto”
Pof. Mauro Agnoletti – Università di Firenze: “I temi di riconoscimento all’interno del sistema agricolturale FAO – Prospettive e benefici”
Prof. Massimo Massi Benedetti : “Olio come toccasana della salute”.
Hanno seguito interventi di giovani produttori e dei rappresentanti delle categorie interessate.
E' stato predisposto anche un banco per l’oil tasting della fascia olivetata.

Si parte dal parcheggio del paese e nei pressi della magnifica rocca dei Trinci,
da poco restaurata, si incomincia a salire decisamente dapprima tra uliveti e poi immersi nei boschi.
Giunti a quota 700 si piega decisamente verso est e costeggiando la valle di Rio si arriva all’omonimo
paesino, da qui si continua a salire fino ad incrociare la carrareccia per Afrile che, dopo qualche decina
di metri, si lascia per salire sui monti che sovrastano il paese (altezze intorno ai 1000 mt.). Si
ridiscende fino ad arrivare a Fondi e da qui risalire al monte Burano, mt. 1129 altitudine massima del
percorso. Lasciata la cima si ridiscende a Capodacqua percorrendo il sentiero VUT che ci permetterà,
anche, di toccare il castello di Gallano, altro bell’esempio di ristrutturazione di un borgo medievale.
