Places to see in ( Volterra - Italy ) Palazzo dei Priori
The Palazzo dei Priori is located in the historic center of Volterra , in the homonymous square, in the province of Pisa . This is the oldest Tuscan municipal building. The palace was also the primitive seat of the city art gallery , as in its rooms many paintings were admitted during the nineteenth century , until all the works were moved to the current location of Palazzo Minucci-Solaini .
The construction of the building was begun by the will of Ildebrando Pannocchieschi , count palatine of the Empire and the task was entrusted to the maestro Riccardo da Como in 1208 ; the construction progressed a bit slowly, even if the ground floor and part of the first floor were used around 1234; however, the factory had to be completed in 1257, as an epigraph in leonini hexameters walled in the building reminds us. The municipal building was built in the most important town square, close to the Duomo , which also overlooks the Palazzo Pretorio , the bishop's palace , Palazzo Inghirami and other homes of the most influential families of the city.
The original name of the building was Domus Communis , that is, Palazzo del Comune and was used by the Elders as a residence. The original twenty-four elders in 1283 were transformed into the eighteen Priori del Popolo and then reduced to the twelve People's Defenders in 1289. The current name of the palace, of the Priors , is due precisely to the title that the Elders later assumed, following the example of similar offices of the municipality of Florence.
The palace is built entirely of stone and the façade is embellished with stringcourse cornices and is crowned with semi-circle merlons probably made in the sixteenth century . The façade, then, is decorated with enamelled terracotta plaques that represent coats of arms of Florentine families: from the fifteenth century , Volterra was governed by Florentine Commissaries having entered the orbit of the lily city .
The building has undergone changes over the centuries: the ground floor was open thanks to the three portals that can still be seen on the facade (the only one remaining is the current entrance) and accessed by a short staircase. Also on the ground floor there was a large atrium that served for meetings and meetings. On the first floor there was the most representative room of the Palace, the Council Hall for the official meetings of the Municipality. Also on this floor there was a small room for smaller meetings and a small chapel.

Places to see in ( Volterra - Italy ) Piazza dei Priori
This Tuscan town is said to be one of the prettiest in Italy with its narrow streets, alleys, and arches and the warm, honey-colored stone of its buildings. At its heart is the Piazza dei Priori, considered to be an almost perfect example of an Italian medieval square and an excellent stopping point for coffee and a spot of people watching. The square is lined with beautiful medieval buildings that give visitors a sense of the town's history.
This Piazza has always been at the center of town life and was originally known as the Bishop's Prato or civic area from which the bishop ruled the citizens. As the town gathered its own identity a commune of townspeople gradually took over the bishop's role and the first of the grand houses and palaces that line the square began to be erected. The focus of the square was always an elm tree in the center around which the consuls and elders held meetings and formulated new laws. Several of these grand palaces are still standing and in use around the Piazza dei Priori.
The Palazzo Vescovile was originally built as a grain store, later becoming the bishop's residence in the late XV century when the Florentines destroyed the Palazzo Vescovi to make way for the city's fort. The imposing arches of this palazzo are thought to be the work of Antonio da San Gallo the Elder.
The town's local bank, Cassa di Risparmio, is housed in the old Palazzo Incontri, once belonging to the notable family of the same name. Recent renovation work has revealed that the building combines elements from both the medieval and Renaissance periods. Following the Council of Trent that saw the cathedral's reformation, the Palazzo Incontri became a seminary, remaining so until the end of the XVIII century.
The XIII century Palazzo del Monte Pio has recently been given a XXI century makeover allowing it to blend more seamlessly into the prevailing style of the Piazzo dei Priori. From Vicolo Mazzoni at the back of this palazzo, visitors can still see parts of the building's original construction. The most important building on the Piazza dei Priori and the one from which the square takes its name is the Palazzo dei Priori, dating from the early XIII century.

In Volterra on Piazza dei Priori (Tuscany, Italy)
Volterra is one of those towns in the Tuscany region of Italy which were built on a hill. The town's history goes back to the 5th century and it is regarded as one of the most beautiful towns of Tuscany.
The day we were visiting Volterra on 13th September 2010 was a bit cloudy and rainy - which is the reason why I was taking the video in Sepia colours - but nevertheless the town revealed its beauty in its full depth.
The video shows the Piazza dei Priori, the main square of Volterra. The Piazza is surrounded by impressive buildings, e.g. the Palazzo dei Priori (build around 1208), said to be the oldest town hall in Tuscany. It looks quite similar to the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, for which it was taken as a model.
If you visit Tuscany in Italy, Volterra is for sure one of the places which is worth seeing.

Volterra is a walled town southwest of Florence, in Italy. The central Palazzo dei Priori has medieval frescoes and a bell tower with expansive views. Volterra Cathedral has a marble entrance and a gilded coffered ceiling. Nearby are the remains of the Etruscan Acropolis. The Guarnacci Etrurian Museum has a rich collection of archaeological artifacts. The Roman Theater complex includes the ruins of 3rd-century baths.
Volterra is a charming town situated in the province of Pisa, not far from Florence, Siena and the coast as well. It is well known for its Etruscan origins and for the many remains belonging to this era.
Velathri, the Etruscan name of the town, was one of the twelve main towns that belonged to the Etruscan confederation; at the end of the 4th century BC, the 7300 meters long fortification walls were built up to protect not only the urban center, but also the surrounding fountains, cultivated fields and pastures from foreign invasions. After the Frankish and Lombard dominions, Volterra passed under Roman control and changed its name into Volaterrae (where the modern name comes from); later, it fell under Florentine supremacy until the town passed under the Grand Duchy of Tuscany before finally becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860.
Today, Volterra is particularly renowned for its peculiar urban layout that reminds us of its Etruscan origins: people can still visit part of the majestic protective walls built during the 5th to 4th centuries BC - including the well-preserved Porta dell'Arco and Porta Diana, two gates for entering the city - as well as the Acropolis that houses several buildings and the foundations of two ancient temples. There are many Roman remains to visit as well, like the Roman Theater, dating back to the end of the first century AC, built in a natural amphiteatheater shape area. Stroll down the historical center, step back in time and enjoy the timeless atmopsphere that surrounds the town: taste its typical products and visit the handicraft workshops, where you'll find many ideas for souvenirs from Tuscany, especially alabaster hand-made objects, which Volterra is famous worldwide for.
Volterra's well-preserved medieval ramparts give the windswept town a proud, forbidding air that author Stephenie Meyer deemed ideal for the discriminating tastes of the planet's principal vampire coven in her wildly popular Twilight series. Fortunately, the reality is considerably more welcoming, as a wander through the winding cobbled streets attests.

Places to see in ( Perugia - Italy ) Palazzo dei Priori
The Palazzo dei Priori is a historical building in Perugia, Umbria, central Italy. As in other Italian medieval communes, it was the seat of the priori. This magistrature was established in Perugia in 1303: the palazzo had been called the Palazzo Nuovo del Popolo (New Palace of the People) to that point. During intractable civic quarrels, a podestà might be established, housed in a separate structure, the Palazzo del Podestà, of which only the Loggia added by Braccio da Montone flanking the Cathedral of San Lorenzo e San Ercolano remains. When the palazzo of this rival to the power of the Priori burned in 1534, significantly, it was not replaced, but fragments from it were incorporated into the archbishop's palace, also fronting the main piazza.
The Magistratura dei Priori that was housed in the structure consisted of ten representatives of each of Perugia's main guilds from among the forty-four that existed, permitted a tenure of only two months. The money-changers, who were housed in their own adjoining quarters in the fifteenth century, had the privilege of always being represented among the Priori, and the merchants' guild was represented by two members instead of one. After the Salt War of 1540 with Pope Paul III, the Priori were renamed “Conservatori dell’Ecclesiastica Obbedienza” (Keepers of Ecclesiastical Obedience) and, the Palazzo del Podestà having been destroyed, the Palazzo dei Priori became the seat of the Papal Legate, the new governor of Perugia. When Pope Julius III restored the Priori, the grateful Perugini commemorated him with the bronze statue next to the Cathedral.
The structure commands the corner where the main artery of medieval Perugia, Corso Vannucci, enters the city's main square; a first section was constructed in 1293-97, at first as the Palatium Novum Populi, the new Palace of the People, with ten bays along the Corso and three facing the piazza. Two more bays and a grand entrance portal were added to the piazza façade in 1333-37, together with the arcaded loggia, where decrees were publicly read. Later in the fourteenth century the palazzo was extended along the Corso, with six bays and a richly carved entrance doorway worthy of a cathedral. Rising above, a tower surmounts and controls the arched access to Via dei Priori, the ancient way that descends to the Etruscan gateway, the Roman Porta Trasimena, which was Christianized as the Arca di S. Luca. A further section down the Corso was built in 1429-43, still keeping to the Gothic tripartite fenestration, to house the Collegio del Cambio, the money exchange that was the financial center of Perugia.
The perimeter of the roof was originally crenellated all around, less for actual defensive purposes than as a symbol of Perugia's independence. Significantly, the crenellations were removed in 1610, when Perugia had submitted at last to papal armies. When Perugia was joined to a united Italy, the crenellations were triumphantly restored.
The grand portal in the Piazza is surmounted by the city's symbols, the griffin of Perugia and the Imperial Guelf lion, in bronze; the originals were probably cast in the Arsenal of Venice, in 1274, the first European bronze castings in the round achieved since Antiquity. Above the door, strung on a bar hanging from chains the keys to the gates of Siena were triumphantly displayed, following the victory of Perugia at the battle of Torrita, 1358.
