An elegant British-built church with its Gothic style architecture at Pallikunnu near Kuttikanam in Idukki district is all set to celebrate its 150th anniversary this year.
The St. George CSI Church like the British church at Munnar has an European cemetery close to it with the names of those buried engraved on the tombstones.
The Church constructed completely in the European style still attracts people including those descendants of Europeans buried there.
The church was constructed on a 15-acre land provided by the Travancore Maharajah in 1869 for a place of worship for Europeans during the initial period of the tea planting.
Ownership
The ownership of the land was handed over to the Church Mission Society (CMS) missionary Henry Backer (Junior).
All the furniture including the wooden benches were those used during the British-era.
there are 34 tombstones of people from England, Ireland and Scotland.
It is in this cemetery that John Daniel Munroe, who was instrumental in planting tea in Munnar, was also buried. The Church is under the control of the British High Commissioner and the only Indian who is buried there is Nallathampi, who served at the church.
According to Mr. Chacko, the cemetery will be the only one of its kind where a mare was buried and a tombstone erected. The the tomb of the mare Downy stands opposite to the tomb of its owner John Daniel Munroe.
The Jubilee festival of the church will conclude on February 10, 2020, he added.

The PhD candidate jitterbugged in the flickering light of flaming torches in the Bamboo Hall of ‘Uravu.’. Jacki has had the fortune to have had Nelson Mandela twice in the audience. Trained in contemporary dance, she has been influenced by Japanese Butoh contemporary form. Her repertoire of more than 60 original full-length productions performed internationally include ‘Daai za-Lady’, ‘Hectism’, ‘San-nin’, ‘Tango’, ‘Bas Les Masques, ‘The Kiss’ and the widely-acclaimed ‘Of Dreams and Dragons’ in collaboration with Japanese Taketeru Kud.

Graveyard behind 'The Church of Our Lady of Hope'
Behind the Church of Our Lady of Hope their is a graveyard.
The Church of Our Lady of Hope, also known as Nossa Senhora Da Esperança is a Roman Catholic church in the Diocese of Cochin. It is located at the island of Vypeen - the point where the Vembanad Lake merges with the Arabian Sea, with Fort Cochin on the other side.
It happens to be one of the oldest churches in Cochin, built by the Portuguese in 1605 A.D
During the Age of Discovery, the Roman Catholic Church established a number of Missions in the New World in order to spread Christianity. The missionaries of the different orders (Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits, Augustinians, etc.) flocked out and began at once to build churches along the coast districts wherever the Portuguese power made itself felt.
This church was built by the Portuguese missionaries and blessed in 1605 A.D by Bishop Dom Andrea de Santa Maria O.F.M., the then Bishop of Cochin.
The Dutch who conquered Cochin in 1663, destroyed all Catholic buildings in Cochin. Only the St. Francis Church and the Santa Cruz Basilica escaped this fate. The original wooden altar and screen of St Francis church were moved to this church when the Dutch took possession of St Francis church.
This imposing church was renovated in 2005 as part of its fourth centenary celebrations. The fourth centenary of her erection was celebrated on 19 November 2005.
