The Palo Verde National Park, in Spanish Parque Nacional Palo Verde is a National Park of Costa Rica, part of the Tempisque Conservation Area, that contains much of the area of the valley of the Tempisque River and covers an area of 45,492 acres in Guanacaste Province, 30 km west of Canas. The surrounding region is mostly tropical dry forests, and the Park concentrates on conserving vital floodplain, marshes, limestone ridges, and seasonal pools from the encroachment of civilization which was putting the ecology of the area at risk.

Palo Verde National Park
Palo Verde is located in the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica and part of Area Conservation Tempisque (can take if you need ride), with more than 71 square miles of spectacular scenery, all kinds of wildlife and great warmth by the inhabitants of the surrounding towns, Palo Verde is a dream to be visited.
You can reach the park on your own, through a tour operator or hire a shuttle service. Once there you can enjoy the great variety of birds, including the huge Roseate Spoonbill, Wood Stork and Great curassow (the last one in a state of vulnerability for man), among many others. During the dry season water is scarce in other parts of the Costa Rica. Due to this, many birds flock to the park and its river basin. Parajos Island, which is located in the middle of the Tempisque River, is usually a great place to spot birds. This island is the largest nesting site for the black-crowned night-herons in Costa Rica. It says there are over 280 species of birds, migratory and resident, making Palo Verde one of the best places to see birds in Costa Rica and around the world.
Also you will see mammals of all sizes, from small white-faced monkeys (please do not feed the monkeys with bananas, as these are not in their natural diet and high in potassium is harmful to their health.), to big deers, coyotes, ocelots, and huge pumas. Want to see some happy monkeys? This video was taken at one of our special transport service, enjoy !!
To be wetland area the park also has a variety of amphibians, with huge populations of toads and frogs and reptiles of all sizes and colors, including snakes, iguanas, snakes lethal and large as Bequer (Boa constrictor) and Coral and Cascabel (rattle) snake. And of course the king of rivers: the crocodile, with the incredible stats of adults average a length of 2.5 to 3 m and weigh 100 to 270 kg. The largest males can reach 6 or 7 m, making this one of the largest species of crocodile in the world, very impressive, rigth !?
Here’s a video of one of our tours and shuttle transportation service with this intimidating yet beautiful creature.

PALO VERDE Tour - SWEET Costa Rica
The Palo Verde Biological Research Station is located in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica, and is one of the three research stations operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS). The Biological Research Station is located inside Palo Verde National Park. Palo Verde Biological Research Station is one of the foremost sites for ecological research on tropical dry forests, which constitute one of the most endangered forest types in the world.
Palo Verde National Park was declared a Wildlife Refuge during the 1970s; over 60 different species of birds used the Laguna, or wetland, as a migratory stop. However, the introduction of Typha domingensis has interfered with bird migration. The OTS, an advisor to the Ministry of the Environment and Energy, has been researching the restoration of the wetlands. In the 1990s, the park was put on the RAMSAR list of wetlands of International Importance and also on the Montreux Record
Mammals found near the station include the mantled howler monkey, the white-throated capuchin, and the collared peccary. American crocodiles can be observed in the Rio Tempisque.
The station includes a library, herbarium, and weather station. Professors from the United States and the University of Costa Rica offer courses at the station, and ecologists give tours for visitors.
You can book a tour to palo verde, with SWEET Costa Rica.
