Scuba diving: wreck dive, Pamir, Barbados
Wreck dive with Reefers and Wreckers, a scuba shop with a great bunch of people based in Speightstown, Barbados. The wreck is the Pamir, which is lying in less than 20m water, and easy even for inexperienced divers. This was in July 2008, following some storms and heavy rain, which explains why the water was somewhat murky, not exactly the crystal clear blue diving one would hope to have in the Caribbean. The camera was a GBP 80.- Traveler underwater camera, hence the somewhat poor quality.

The Barbados Historic Railway Story
The video was taken on the St. Nicholas Abbey Historic Railway {SNAHR) Tour. It's an amazing story of the vintage trains and railways the operated in Barbados many years ago, The SNAHR tour is a step back in time. There is something enchanting about those old steam engines and the story telling and tour brings it all to life.

THE TRAGEDY OF THE PAMIR
THE TRAGEDY OF THE PAMIR
The Tragedy of the Pamir
Summer 1957. Since the death of his wife, boatman Acki Lüders has lived with his daughter at his mother-in-laws - distraught and torn between a longing for life at sea and the responsibility for his child. His friend Ewald pays him a visit on his way to Hamburg Harbour, from where he will be travelling to Buenos Aires as chief mate on the cargo-carrier and school sailing ship PAMIR to load 4000 tons of barley deemed for Germany. Ewald manages to persuade his friend to join him and secures him a job as boatman on the PAMIR. Captain Lewerenz awaits them on board. Major differences of opinion during the outward journey regarding the training of the 45 young cadets consistently lead to disputes between the two friends and the captain.
Upon their arrival in Buenos Aires, the local harbour workers are on strike. The PAMIR cannot be loaded. Every day the ship has to stay anchored costs money. Finally, the captain yields to the shipping companys pressure. In order to save time and money, he allows his own men to load the PAMIR with the barley as bulk cargo - including even the deep tank, which is normally filled with ballast water. Acki and Ewald are in doubt regarding the stability of the ship with this dangerous ballast allocation. But they are unable to prevent the PAMIR putting to sea.
During the return voyage they receive an alarming radio message: a hurricane is heading directly for their ship. Shortly afterwards, the PAMIR pitches heavily to one side, causing the 4000 tons of barley below deck to shift alarmingly. The German four-master is in imminent danger of sinking, taking the 86 seamen down to the depths with it. Acki and some of the cadets manage to reach the wreck of one of the lifeboats, but only a few of the young apprentices can endure the lengthy physical and mental exertion. Just six survivors return to the port of Hamburg.
Based on a true story
On September 21st, 1957, the PAMIR, a school ship belonging to the German Merchant Navy on its way from Buenos Aires to Hamburg, was hit by hurricane Carrie and sank.
79 ships and 20 aircraft from 15 different countries searched for nine days for survivors.
Of the 86 seamen on board, 80 perished.
International sympathy and media interest was overwhelming: 180 reporters from all corners of the globe and even the Pope were there to greet the return of the handful of survivors.
The PAMIRs accident at sea could presumably have been avoidable.
The PAMIR catastrophe brought down the final curtain on the era of cargo-carrying, school sailing ships.
Making of
Production work on the TRAGEDY OF THE PAMIR took 72 days. 82 actors, 2000 extras and a 160-strong production team travelled around the world to the original scenes of the film in order to present the story of the PAMIR as authentically as possible.
The four-master SEDOV doubled as the PAMIR in the harbours of Hamburg and Buenos Aires, as well a in the open sea. For this, the hull of the SEDOV was painted black and red and the superstructure altered accordingly.
The sinking took place in a shallow water basin belonging to the Mediterranean Film Studios on Malta. Here, several different constructions were necessary: a 1:6 scale model of the PAMIR, a 1:1 scale model of the hull section (80 metres) and a 1:1 scaled section of the main mast.
A special studio construction was built for shooting the inrush of water in the interior of the PAMIR (flooding of the corridors and the wireless operation room etc.).
The below deck scenes were shot on board the PAMIRs sister ship, the PASSAT, which is in the museum harbour of North Germanys Travemünde.
