Cycling Pamir Highway: Dushanbe (Tajikistan) to Osh (Kyrgyzstan) - 2017
Two Dutch guys cycling the Pamir Highway in July 2017 within 2 weeks crossing Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Day by day schedule in the description. Leave a comment if you are interested in any other specific information about the trip.
Day 1: Dushanbe - Obigarm (paved, ascending gently)
Day 2: Obigarm - Tavildara (mostly unpaved road, bad condition, 10 km/h possible in descent, some water streams )
Day 3: Tavildara - Qal'ai Khumb (mostly unpaved road, bad condition, some water streams, first pass over 3000 m)
Day 4: Qal'ai Khumb - Dashtak (mostly unpaved road, bad condition)
Day 5: Dashtak - Khorog (we hitchhiked because we both fell sick (throwing up and diarrhea), be cautious with food)
Day 6: Khorog - Jelondy (paved road, good condition, gently uphill)
Day 7: Jelondy - Alichur (mostly paved, unpaved at higher altitudes, steep climb, one of the hardest because its the 1st above 4000 m)
Day 8: Alichur - Murghab (mostly paved, easiest stage of them all)
Day 9: Murghab - Aikbaital pass (not very far, mostly paved, again easy ride)
Day 10: Aikbaital pass - Karakul (several very bad unpaved sections, desending towards Karakul)
Day 11: Karakul - Sary Tash (Brutal winds between Karakul and the border, unpaved downhill, paved again from the Kyrgyz border station)
Day 12: Sary Tash - Gulcha (starting with an uphill section, then its smoothly going downhill, Max speed: 70 km/h)
Day 13: Gulcha - Osh (starting with an uphill section again, then smoothly downhill, traffic in Osh can be chaotic)
VLOG | Tajikistan | The Pamir Highway, Osh to Dushambe
Two thirty-somethings have quit their jobs to travel the world.
The Pamir mountains towered around us as we crossed into Tajikistan and climbed mountain passes over 4500M and into the most inspiring high altitude landscape. As far as the eye could see, we were the only car in sight along the Pamir Highway and through the Wakhan corridor, bordering Afghanistan. This was our most rugged and epic road trip.

Pamir Highway in Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Pamir Highway in Dushanbe, Tajikistan
The M41, known informally and more commonly as the Pamir Highway is a road traversing the Pamir Mountains through Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. It is the only continuous route through the difficult terrain of the mountains and serves as the main supply route to Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region. The route has been in use for millennia, as there are a limited number of viable routes through the high Pamir Mountains. The road formed one link of the ancient Silk Road trade route. M41 is the Soviet road number, but no road number is generally signposted along the road today, only destinations.
The ultimate guide to taking a road trip on the “roof of the world” – the Pamir Highway.
Basketball-sized stones rained down on us from the roadside cliffs above. The earth shook violently, and the sound of exploding dynamite echoed down the valley.
We stopped in our tracks and stared fearfully across the narrow Pamir River. 30m from us was Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, which was currently under the attack of Taliban rebels.
We looked at Mohammed and waited for his instructions. Our guide simply laughed. “The Afghans are building a road.”
The Pamir Highway is one of the world’s greatest road trips. Unofficially starting in Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan and unofficially ending in Osh in Kyrgyzstan, this captivating route was once part of the historic Silk Road.
Weaving between soaring mountains and along sprawling desert, the trek that today makes up the majority of people’s exploration connects Osh to Khorog, a small town in the heart of the Pamir Mountains.
Highway M41 rises over the second highest border crossing in the world and hits the border of Tajikstan and Afghanistan before cutting in on a direct route to Khorog.
At this point most people continue along the border and into the infamous Wakhan Valley, flanked by the Pamir Mountains on one side, and the Hindu Kush on the other.
No images or stories can prepare you for just how beautiful the Wakhan Corridor is. For as many days as you care to take you traverse the fine line between two misunderstood nations. T
ajikistan is more remembered for its civil war and as a major heroin trade route than anything else. The problems of Afghanistan are well-documented and often overstated.
Still in this narrow passage all one can think about is how surreal its scenery is.

I crossed the Pacific Ocean on sailing boats as crew and visited The Unites States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, The Marquesas Islands, Tahiti, The Kingdom Of Niue, Rarotonga, Tonga, Fiji, some other small islands and ended up in New Zealand. In New Zealand I cycled 3.000km from the northernmost point to the southernmost point. After that I rode a motorbike from Vietnam to Laos and Cambodia. Recently I converted a Rusian 4x4 UAZ Buhanka oldtimer into a campervan and am driving around Central Asia with my puppy dog.
Pamir Highway (Dushanbe - Osh) by bicycle / July 2015
A one-month bicycle tour from Dushanbe (Tajikistan) to Osh (Kyrgyzstan). Two brothers from Switzerland with no previous bicycle experience but with a good sense of humor and a bit of 'calculated pessimism'. The roads were sometimes bumpy and sandy, the saddles hard, but the food delicious and the views breathtaking. More info on

Complete Pamir Highway Guide
????
15 Day Alternative Pamir Highway Itinerary
????
Travelling through the GBAO in Tajikistan to Kyrgyzstan, following The Pamir Highway, with a few detours along the way. We hired a Landcruiser and driver in Dushanbe and spent 16 days journeying to Osh in the second half of August. We planned in plenty of hikes and side trips off the main M41 route, including Jizeu village in the Bartang Valley, the Wakhan, Peak Engels Meadow, Zorkul Lake, Jarty Gumbez, the Pshart and Madian Valleys, Rangkul, and Tulparkul. We stayed in homestays, guesthouses and camped along the way. The scenery in this remote region is truly outstanding.

TAJIKISTAN (Dushanbe, Fann Mountains, Pamir Highway)
Jeep tours on the Pamir Highway (Tajikistan) .
Travelling in jeeps in the high-altitude areas of the Pamirs!
A trip filled with enormous breathtaking spaces and the cold beauty of the high Pamir Mountains.
The famous Pamir Highway, M 41, is a high-altitude car road over 700 km long connecting Dushanbe, Khorog (Tajikistan) and Osh (Kyrgyzstan). The Pamir Highway is unpredictable and usually empty, featuring several passes over 4,000 m high. Along the whole length of the road there are very few car service centres and petrol stations. Currently, it is one of the most elevated paved roads having such length. M 41 forms the only vital artery connecting the isolated alpine regions of the Pamir Mountains with the rest of the civilised world.

7 Tajikistan - Driving the Pamir Highway and Wakhan
Driving the Pamir Highway felt like a real challenge to cope with a Euro VI vehicle. The Iveco Daily 4x4 tackled the job flawlessly. Thanks to its long range (350 liters of diesel on board), we easily spanned the route between Dushanbe in Tajikistan and the next fuel station with European standard Euro V diesel in Gulcha (Kirgistan).
And the adventure on itself? Just watch te film ;-)
Amazmaz is a guelta in Mauritania. A remote and beautiful spot, a source of water and life in the middle of the desert. Chances are low that we will ever visit it. But the mere idea reminds us to keep dreaming about distant places.

Moto Kirghizstan Tadjikistan & Pamir Highway 2019
