Winterset City Park Campground in Winterset Iowa offers full, partial and primitive hookup RV and tent camping in a city run campground. Reasonable nightly rates the sites are available on a first come first served basis unless they have been previously reserved; reservations can be made 5 days in advance by calling the city offices. Located in the small rural town the campground is adjacent to the city park. Sites are large enough for most sized RVs. Gravel roads and pads with backin sites angled smartly to the road and a few pull thrus too.
Winterset City Park Campground is located in the county seat of Madison County made famous by a 90's era book and movie glorifying an extra marital affair by a rural farm wife seduced by a dashing urban journalist. Despite the message of the movie the name is what sticks around, The Bridges of Madison County. One of those bridges is located right in this park as is an old looking stone bridge, a stone lookout tower, a couple miles of hiking and biking trails, playgrounds, ball fields, and a hedge maze.
Guests can easily walk in to the downtown area to visit the National Quilting Museum or the birthplace of John Wayne. Guests can also venture out to tower the other covered bridges in the area.
A grass tent area is available in a shaded setting. Two bath houses are available and do double as storm shelters. An onsite camphost helps manage sites and sell firewood. All the pull thru sites are partial hookups while some of the backins provide full hookups. Sites share a water spigot.

Winterset Iowa trip May 2017
Time for a taste of Holland. We have been there before, in the 70s, so this was a flashback. The Windmill tour is a must, it is very interesting. Go on a day when there is some wind however. Great camping spots at the Fair Grounds.

The Middle River hugs the foundation of Pammel State Park but its one-of-a-kind tunnel tells a historic tale.
Pammel Park Backbone Trail, Madison County, IA
Pammel Park is roughly five miles SW of Winterset in Madison County, Iowa. I've been intending to walk some of the county's trails (learn more about what the county has to offer at for a few years now and, with a few days away from the office decided to give it a start. A map of the trail is available at
Arguably there's not a lot of action here, but that's kind of the point—the trail was quiet save a few birds, squirrels, and deer I happened upon. It was great to get out from behind the desk and out in to the natural world.
The path isn't very kid-friendly (part of my park/trail exploration is to find fun places around the county to take my three boys) with a few steep ascents and drop offs. Not a problem for an aware adult, but I don't know that I'd trust my toddlers to safely traverse!

Original version of a video produced about life here in Madison County, Iowa, home to the Covered Bridges of Madison County. This includes scenes from the annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival, always held on the second full weekend of October. The 2012 Festival will be held on October 13-14, 2012.
Imagine living in a small town of the past, with a courthouse square filled with unique shops, a friendly and safe place where you get to know your neighbors, and folks gather up their lawn chairs for the summer concerts on the courthouse lawn by the community band. Where you can never walk downtown without stopping to talk with the people you meet. Such places do still exist! And access to more great cultural opportunities like the symphony, opera, class AAA minor league baseball, concerts and much more are just a short drive up the road in Des Moines.
Unlike the stereotypical view of Iowa as being all flat, Madison County is nestled in picturesque rolling terrain, blessed with fertile fields, wooded hills, gentle streams, abundant wildlife and majestic limestone bluffs. Besides the world-famous covered bridges, Winterset (the county seat) is also the birthplace of movie legend John Wayne.

Where in Iowa is Jeff?...The Sequel
Here is the 2008 version of Where in Iowa is Jeff? From February to November, I logged 9,850 miles and collected 300 dancing clips. Between the 2007 and 2008 videos, I visited all 99 Iowa counties and drove somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000 miles.
Since last year focused on the top-tier Iowa spots, this years video visits more obscure Iowa places and enabled me to interact more with Iowans along the way. If you think you've seen all of Iowa, you are wrong. Keep looking; you'll be amazed at what you find.

Middle River Madison County Iowa Kayak Canoe - May 5-6-17
Middle River Madison County Iowa Kayak and Canoe Paddle on May 6, 2017. Hosted by Central Iowa Paddlers. Ned and Marcie McPartland organized the trip on the Middle River from the Roseman Bridge to Pammel Park. Water flow and level was great: 483 CFS and a 8.71 gauge. My GPS clocked exactly 8.02 paddling miles and an elevation drop of 45 feet, which made for a nice speed of 4.2 moving mph. Only one easily missed strainer and the high flow kept the broken limestone rock hull-smashers at bay.
