Kykkos (Cyprus) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kykkos in Cyprus.
In the heart of the mediaeval island of Cyprus are the isolated and unspoiled Troodos Mountains that contain the finest and largest monasteries on the island. Kykkos is located some distance from the nearest village and is situated at an altitude of one thousand one hundred and forty metres above sea level on the mountain of the same name. At the main entrance, golden shining mosaics adorn the walls and religious motifs indicate its holiness. Due to its religious and historic importance the monastery is very popular with both the faithful and tourists alike and in 1998 a splendid museum was inaugurated that exhibits numerous works of precious art. The atmosphere of the museum’s exhibition rooms with their marble floors, ornate wooden ceilings and special illumination. give visitors a strong sense of bygone times. Unique icons and stone reliefs are a reminder of the fame and splendour of Greek culture and the Greek Orthodox religion. The Panagia is entered from a second inner courtyard. The iconastasis of this small monastery church are among the most splendid and precious of the Greek Orthodox world. Each of the monastery’s buildings was re-built following a fire in 1813 but thankfully the ‘miracle’ has survived to the present day.

The murals of The Holy, Royal Monastery of Kykkos Cyprus
The Holy, Royal and Stavropegic Monastery of Kykkos, is the largest & most famous monastery in Cyprus. Founded in AD1100 by the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenus, Kykkos Monastery lies in the heart of the Troodos mountains. Little remains of the original monastic buildings due to devastating fires throughout the centuries. The present abbot, the Most Reverend Fr. Nikiphoros, undertook the restoration of Kykkos Monastery and this has recently been completed.
The recent murals & paintings that adorn the monastery are particularly fine and it is these that I have concentrated on for this film, following a number of visits. The frescoes in the main part of the church were painted by the Cypriot painter Gorge Georgiou & the golden mosaics are the work of the Cypriot artist Philippos Kepolas....

The throne of Panagia of Kykkos lies northwest of the Monastery of Panagia of Kykkos.
The Panagia of Kykkou, during the Venetian domination of the island, 1489-1571, was called the Virgin of the Rain, and so the fathers of the Kykkos monastery used to use the Holy icon of the Virgin of Kykkos during periods of drought. They would climb up through a path to the top of the mountain, where they would place the icon on a wooden throne and ask the drought to be over. From this fact, comes the name of the site, Throni of the Panagia.
This wooden throne today was replaced by the architecture of the architect Philip Loizou, which is characterized by elements of Byzantine and modern architecture. In fact this building is a canopy, supported by four pillars. Additionally there is a road about 2 km long that leads to it.
On the north, in a specially designed square, is the statue of Archbishop Makarios III, the work of sculptor Nikos Kotsiamanis. It was placed there in 2008 after being removed from the precinct of the Archdiocese, where it was originally placed, since a few meters below the Throne is the tomb
of the Archbishop Makarios III (1950-1977).

The Troodos mountain range is the highest mountain range in Cyprus with peaks reaching an altitude of 1952 meters. Troodos is also called the area near the peak of Chionistras. There are three roads that connect the mountain with Nicosia, Limassol and Prodromos, from which the name comes (three streets - Troodos).

CYPRUS: Agios Neophytos Monastery [HD]
Agios Neophytos Monastery lies 10 km outside Paphos, near Tala village. Agios (means Saint) Neophytos was the founder of the monastery in 1159. He lived there (from 1170) and died in 1219 at the age of 85. He is considered to be one of the most significant figures of the Church of Cyprus.
Inside the Engleistra (place of seclusion near the monastery) Saint Neophytos led a hermit’s life until 1170. The Engleistra was initially a natural cave on the eastern side of a hill’s slope, and was carved into a place of seclusion by St. Neophytos. It consisted of two areas. One area was a small chapel dedicated to Timios Stavros ( Holy Cross) and the other was the Saint’s cell, in which he also carved his tomb.
A famous painter, Theodoros Apsevdis, undertook to paint the frescoes in the Engleistra. You can also can see Byzantine icons of exceptional artistic quality in the main church of the monastery. Or in the museum of the monastery, which has exhibits from both the ancient period and Byzantine period.
The main church of the monastery was built around 200 years after the death of St. Neophytos and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Troodos Mountains, Cyprus 2017 ????????
Troodos Mountains are located in the center of the island of Cyprus. The highest peak is snow-covered Mount Olympus (also spelled Mount Olympos) at 1,952 meters above sea level. There are various Byzantine churches and monasteries in the region, including the most well-known Kykkos Monastery. Troodos Mountains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and definitely worth visiting.
In this fourth part of my Cyprus Road Trip VLOG series, join me as I discover Mount Olympus, the High Cross and the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross above Pedoulas village, Kykkos Monastery and the beautiful Cedar Valley. The drive through Cedar Valley was one of the most breathtaking road trips I have ever done and the video footage doesn't do this epic part of the island any justice.
Follow me on my one-week road trip across the island of CYPRUS in February 2017 - visiting Larnaca, Cape Greko, Ayia Napa, Nissi Beach, Nicosia (Lefkosia/Lefkoşa), Troodos Mountains, Paphos, Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock), Kourion, Limassol and Governor's Beach.
