Panagia tou Sinti - Venetian Period Monastery in Cyprus
Panagia tou Sinti is an ancient abandoned Orthodox Monastery in Cyprus. It is located 35 km from Paphos near the village Pentalia. The Monastery was built in the 16th century and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The Monastery was in use until 1927. In 1994 Restoration of the Monastery began which was completed in 1997 and earned the Europa Nostra Award. It is considered the most important structure from the Venetian Period in Cyprus.

Ayia -Thekla Chapel - Greek orthodox church in Ayia Napa, Cyprus
The small cave chapel of St. Thekla west of Ayia Napa is right next to the sea. A small white and blue church with the same name is also close to the site. Ayia Thecla (Ayia Thekla Church) is much venerated on the island of Cyprus as is shown by the numerous icons and candles in the small dark cave.
Thecla was engaged to Thamyris, but after hearing Paul preach, she decided to remain a virgin and follow the missionary from place to place. Her parents were outraged and turned her over to the authorities. She would be burned as an example to other young girls who went against their parents’ wishes, but a storm put out the flames.

Twice Thekla escaped from being eaten by lions, and finally she became a recluse in a cave near the town of Maaloula, Syria living a life of pepetual prayer and fasting.
For the next seventy-two years, she lived the life of a hermitess and died there in Maaloula though legend says she was miraculously transported to Rome to be buried beside Paul.
The story of Thekla comes from the apocryphal work Acts of Paul and Thekla which was written before 190AD and was very popular in the early church.
Referred to as a ‘Religious Romance’, there were Greek, Coptic, Latin, and Ethiopia versions; the work was disapproved by Tertrullian and lost popularity in the early 3rd century.
Up until early December 2013, her tomb had been a popular place of pilgrimage, but Syrian rebels led by Abu Jafar ransacked all of the monasteries in the vicinity, digging up the bones of Ayia Thekla and desecrating the tomb. The twelves nuns of the convent were thought to have been kidnapped when they disappeared, but they had been taken to safety and hidden from the rebels.
Panagia Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery, Cyprus 2014
By the way, the name of the monastery means in the translation, the monastery is dedicated to Our Lady of the Golden Pomegranate.
As usual with photographers, you try to reach the destination before sunrise to use the best light of the day. So I arrived at the large entrance gate at about 6:00 a.m. In the monastery courtyard I heard the chant of the pre-prayers from the church, the Holy Mass had already begun. So I looked around in the monastery courtyard and took some photos of the buildings.
Then I noticed a monk coming up to me from the church. After a short presentation on my part as a photographer, the monk invited me for a coffee after the Mass and went back to the church. What I did not know, the monk was Father Dionysus, the abbot of the monastery and at the same time the only monk who has lived in this monastery for 45 years.
Father Dionysus later told me at a Cyprus Coffee that the good condition of the whole monastery is due to the support with the AG Leventis Foundation and he is very grateful for this cooperation.
The Village Panagia next to the Monastery is the place where former Archbishop Makarios was born and lived with the family.
The Historical Monastery is a very small and quiet place. The daily tourist flow starts around 9:00 a.m. and lasts until late afternoon. The central point of contact for many Orthodox Christians is the historic church. Many interesting details that the monastery has to offer are unfortunately hidden from tourists due to the narrow time windows of their guides.
My recommendation, therefore, take the time to visit and enjoy all the nooks and crannies of the monastery. The abbot father Dionysus is very open to interested visitors and is happy to answer your questions personally.
Don't miss the visit of the monastery's own wine production with wine cellar, the large library with countless icons, a conference center with picture exhibition, the private room for prayer of the late Archbishop Makarios, who is from the village of Panagia Comes.
Twice a week there are also workshops for icon painting, with one of the best icon painters in Cyprus. And if you just want to have something contemplative and enjoy the silence, you are also in good hands there. In front of the monastery there is a restaurant with a viewing platform, but only in summer.

Throni Hill - Archbishop Makarios III Tomb - Kykkos - Cyprus
older video 2018
The throne of Panagia of Kykkos lies northwest of the Monastery of Panagia of Kykkos.
The Panagia of Kykkou, during the Venetian domination of the island, 1489-1571, was called the Virgin of the Rain, and so the fathers of the Kykkos monastery used to use the Holy icon of the Virgin of Kykkos during periods of drought. They would climb up through a path to the top of the mountain, where they would place the icon on a wooden throne and ask the drought to be over. From this fact, comes the name of the site, Throni of the Panagia.
This wooden throne today was replaced by the architecture of the architect Philip Loizou, which is characterized by elements of Byzantine and modern architecture. In fact this building is a canopy, supported by four pillars. Additionally there is a road about 2 km long that leads to it.
On the north, in a specially designed square, is the statue of Archbishop Makarios III, the work of sculptor Nikos Kotsiamanis. It was placed there in 2008 after being removed from the precinct of the Archdiocese, where it was originally placed, since a few meters below the Throne is the tomb
of the Archbishop Makarios III (1950-1977).

Ayia Napa Monastery, Cyprus
Ayia Napa Monastery is the best known landmark of the Ayia Napa area. It has a charm that represents a time when Ayia Napa was a sleepy fishing village. It seems that in ancient times, the location where the monastery and the village exists today, was covered by thick forest, visited only by hunters from the neighbouring villages. There is not sufficient evidence as to when the Monastery was originally founded. The cave, the hiding place and the well, all testify to the existence of the Christian community, from the time of the Byzantine era. According to local tradition, in the cave that has now become a church, the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary was found by a hunter. The hunter’s dog was first to see the glowing icon and began barking, insistently calling over his master.
