Panchakki also known as the water mill, takes its name from the mill which used to grind grain for the pilgrims. This monument located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, displays the scientific thought process put in medieval Indian architecture. It was designed to generate energy via water brought down from a spring on a mountain. The building, attached to the dargah of Baba Shah Musafir a Sufi saint is located in a garden near the Mahmud Darvaza and consist of a mosque, a madrissa, a kacheri, a minister's house, a sarai and houses for zananas
Most of the buildings in the dargah complex (including Panchakki) were erected by Turktaz Khan, a noble on the staff of Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah in about 1695 A. D. The oblong reservoir in front of the mosque and fountains were added 20 years later by Jamil Beg Khan. Dating back to the 17th century, this ingenious water mill was designed to use the energy generated by flowing water from a nearby spring to turn the large grinding stones of the flour mill. Shah Mosafar died . This water mill was used to grind grain for the pilgrims and disciples of saints as well as for the troops of the garrison.

The complex of Panchakki had been a place of external abode of the great Sufi Saints who gathered to India in 12th Cent A.D. The Panchakki, is a calm and peaceful place that visualizes the life that existed in the medieval period. Visitors having sensitive imagination may hear the beats of drum and the humming noise of the people moving around the complex.
The water flows down through clay pipes based on the Siphon System from the distance of 11 km. This marvelous water mill wax designated to generate energy to turn the large grinding stone, serving as a flour mill.
The Panchakki with all its glories and enchantments has a unique place in the history.In fact it was the residance of populer saint “Baba Shah Musafir . The panchakki has its own underground water channel, having the source some where towards the North of the city about 8 Kms. away in the mountains. The construction of this water channel from the main source to the Panchakki was started during the life time of saint “Baba Shah Musafir some time in the year 1624 A.D.
The complete water channel is made up of earthen pipes finely lined up and at appropriate distances, masonry pillars are erected which serve as natural suction pumps to make the water flow through the pipes with force through the distance of 8 Kms. Finely, the water rises syhonically to a huge elevated masonry pillar from where it falls down into the main tank to make an attractive Water Fall.

PANCHAKKI - the water mill (Aurangabad)
Panchakki is a major attraction of Aurangabad and its literal meaning is water mill. This mill receives its share of water that travels through an underground channel from a source which is 6 km away in the mountains. The water is then discharged on to the wheel creating a fascinating waterfall. There is also a garden and fountains with fish-filled tanks adding to the charm of the entire area.
Panchakki also has a tomb of Baba Shah Muzaffar, a Sufi Saint who was spiritual adviser to Aurangzeb.

Panchakki water mill Aurangabad | tourist attraction near bibi ka maqbara
Panchakki is a watermill in Aurangabad which shows the scientific thought process of the medieval Indian architecture. It is a tourist attraction located close to Bibi ka maqbara, distance only 2 kms away. It has a water reservoir with lots of fishes. A small water fall , a mosque and a minister's house are located in this complex. I visited this place after visiting Bibi ka maqbara aurangabad. I made a road trip from pune to aurangabad and reached aurangabad in 5 hrs the same day. I visited bibi ka maqbara and panchakki on the same day. I spent some 45 minutes here. I visited ajanta ellora caves on day 2 and by evening drove back to Pune.
Aurangabad - Pan Chakki and Bibi ka Maqbara
Aurangabad is a city in Maharashtra, India named after the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The city is a tourist hub, surrounded with many historical monuments, including the Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as other attractions like Bibi Ka Maqbara and Pan Chakki.
Situated about 3 km from the city is Bibi Ka Maqbara, the burial place of Aurangzeb's wife, Rabia-ud-Durrani alias Dilras Banu Begum. It is an imitation of the Taj at Agra and due to its similar design, it is popularly known as the Mini Taj of the Deccan.
Panchakki(water mill) is a 17th century water mill situated at a distance of 1 km from the city. An intriguing water mill, the Panchakki is famous for its underground water channel, which traverses more than 8 km. to its source away in the mountains. The channel culminates in a mesmerising 'artificial' waterfall that powers the mill. A mosque also is situated inside the structure.
