Pandav Caves || Pachmarhi
pandav caves in pachmarhi. The picturesque Satpura ranges around Panchmarhi town hide countless natural and historical marvels. One of them is right inside the town - five rock-cut temples known as Pandav Caves.
These rock-cut caves have been made in low hill and in front of this exciting monument there has been developed wonderful garden. Such garden is rather common sight of many Indian landmarks - beautiful tradition which would not harm visitor attractions in other countries as well.
BUDDHIST TEMPLES
Caves have been hewn by Buddhist monks. Different sources mention different time of their creation - some name that caves have been created as early as in the 1st century AD, others - that caves were shaped in the 6th - 7th century AD or in the 9th - 10th century AD. When looking at the architecture of the facades, one of the later times seems more credible.
The facade of each cave is adorned with several columns and pilasters with simple adornments.
Caves are roughly carved but they are attractive. One of caves served for meditation - it has got beautiful echo effect. One more cave was devoted to Buddhist god of wealth often named Kubera.
In earlier times caves were adorned with paintings but this adornment unfortunately is gone now.
On the top of hill there have been found remnants of brick structure - Buddhist stupa. Here was found a statue of Buddha which is in Bhopal now.
ADVENTURES OF PANDAVAS
Temples though have been named after Pandavas - adventurous brothers from the Hindu epic Mahābhārata.
Caves have even given the name to the town - Panchmarhi can be translated like five caves or also five huts.
According to the local mythology Pandavas were living in these caves for 12 - 13 years while hiding away from their enemy relatives. There are several more Pandava Caves in India where reportedly have been hiding these same Pandavas - like Pandav Leni Caves in Nashik, Maharashtra.
One of brothers, Arjuna, taught music to Nagpati, he wedded daughter of Nagraj Vasu who lived in Nagdwari some 15 km from Panchmarhi.
According to the legend five caves were made for each of the brothers - Yudhishthira, Arjuna, Nakul, Sahdeo, Bhima and for their wife - Draupadi.
Draupadi Cave (Draupadi Kuti) is the most spacious and best ventilated one. Bhima's Cave (Bhim Kothari) is the darkest of them all - Bhima was the toughest of all five brothers.
ANCIENT PAINTINGS
Sometimes it is mentioned that Pandav Caves in Panchmarhi contain valuable paintings. This is not exactly true - Pandav Caves contained medieval paintings which unfortunately are lost now.
Satpura ranges though contain many other, more ancient rock shelters. Some of these caves contain paintings left by Stone Age people - like Dhuandar Caves, Bharat Neer (Dorothy Deep), Chieftain's Cave, Hearer's Cave (Harper's Cave), shelters in Kites Crag.

Pandav Caves, Pachmarhi
Pachmarhi is a combination of the two words 'Panch' and 'Marhi', which translates to 'Five Caves' or 'Five Huts' in Hindi. This reiterates the lore that the caves were home to the five Pandava brothers. These 1,000-year-old rock-cut caves also overlook an attractive garden. Thus, the scenic beauty of the backdrop and their mythological significance makes these caves one of the most famous tourist attractions of the state.
Though Pandava caves proudly associate with Mahabharata, many archaeologists contradict the fact. They believe that these caves belong to the Gupta period (9th or 10th century AD) and even predict their construction by Buddhist monks. Traces of an ancient brick-built stupa have been unearthed on top of the caves, which dates back these caves to the Buddhist period. Archeologists believe the stupa is a remnant of the regime of King Ashoka.

Reechgarh Caves Pachmarhi || Ashoka movie shooting place || pachmarhi trip #13
Reechgarh is also the place where some scenes of ashoka movie shoot with kareena kapoor. Reechgarh has two meaning. One in English which actually Ridgegarh because of the natural ridge formed at the spot
The Hindi name of the the place is Reechgarh, Reech in Hindi is for a Bear. And the place is where bears were seen. It's a natural beauty where the rocks are carved naturally
A must visit place, it's got a small climb but the place is mesmerizing.
Reechgarh - one of the biggest natural cave in Pachmarhi. Reech stands for Bear and the cave is said be the place for bears. Quite a massive cave and very interesting inside. The place is very picturesque and a rough terrain. The cavern looks like a canyon inside with lot of water scars running for centuries inside. We spent close to 30 minutes here and it was really a worth time to spend.

While there are several sites within 5-6 km radius, the best way of getting around is to hire a four-wheeler, Maruti Gypsy being the norm in Pachmarhi. Gypsy can be hired through open market or hotel can arrange with Gypsy operators. It gets comfortable if one visits places of heart-attraction in Pachmarhi in their own vehicle.
One excellent and economic option is to share a Gypsy for sightseeing. They make shared tour keeping in mind the preferences of tourists (for example families or couples are not mixed with group of boys). You would really need to look around for providers of shared tours because everyone tries to promote full hire of vehicles.
