Treasure of Panjshir, the Afghan emeralds
Dear all,
I'm happy to invite you to discover a new field video on Field Gemology by Vincent Pardieu. During a field expedition in September 2018 we visited the Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan to collect samples for the Bahrain Institute for Pearls & Gemstones (DANAT).
Emeralds were discovered in Panjsher during the 20th century and became famous after 1979, during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan as its emeralds helped to finance Mujahideen under Massoud, The Lion of Panjshir in their fight against the Soviets and later against the Talibans. Since that period the deposit located at more than 3,000 meters altitude is worked all year long by the local people from either Khenj, Mukeni or Darch te Rivaat villages.

Panjshir (Persian: پنجشیر, literally Five Lions, also spelled as Panjsher) is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan, located in the northeastern part of the country. The province is divided into seven districts and contains 512 villages. As of 2018, the population of Panjshir province is about 371,902.[1][2] Bazarak serves as the provincial capital. A report says more than 700,000 people of Panjshir province living outside of this province, particularly located in Kabul city of Afghanistan.
Panjshir became an independent province from neighboring Parwan Province in 2004. It is surrounded by Baghlan and Takhar in the north, Badakhshan and Nuristan in the east, Laghman and Kapisa in the south, and Parwan in the west.
ولایت پنجشیر در شمال افغانستان واقع است. مرکز این ولایت شهر بازارک است.
مناطق این ولایت تا سال ۱۳۸۳ خورشیدی بخشی از ولایت (استان) پروان بودند و ولسوالیهای پنجشیر، حصه اول پنجشیر و حصه دوم پنجشیر را در پروان تشکیل می‌دادند. ولسوالیهای اضافی عبارتند از: عنابه، بازارک، پریان، خِنج، دَره، روخه، شُتُل.

معرفى ولايت پنجشير
پنجشیر يکى از ولايات جديد ايجاد شده در کشور است ، اين ولايت به فاصله ۱۲۰ کیلومتری به طرف شمالشرق کابل در بین دو شاخه جنوبی هندوکش، از شمالشرق به جنوب غرب موازی به امتداد هندوکش واقع است و دره‌های فرعی آن از شمال به جنوب و از جنوب به شمال امتداد داشته وبه دره عمومی پنجشیر وصل می شود.

The word Panjshir is a combination of two words from the persian language: Panj and Shir. In parsi, “panj” means five and “shir” means Lion. Thus, the name literally comes to mean, Five Lions. Legend has it that the valley was named after five brothers who created a dam for the Sultan, Mahmud of Ghazni, in the early 11th century; the foundations of which, are still being used for a modern reservoir.
Panjshir Valley is located 150 KM North of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan and is divided by the Panjshir River. The valley lies at the foothills of the Hindu Kush Mountain, which forms part of the Himalayan Mountain System. Panjshir Valley is known for its scenic landscape; lush green valley, rich apricot orchards and river charging through the valley flanked by some of the tallest peaks in the world. The Valley is often referred to as the Tranquil Valley and is one of the most peaceful regions in Afghanistan.
In the Spring of 329 BC Alexander the Great crossed the Hindu Kush Mountains into Bactria, which includes present day Afghanistan and Iran, in pursuit of the Satrap of Bactria, Artaxerxes V. Under the Greek rule, Bactrian emeralds were widely traded throughout the Greek and later the Roman Empire. It is now believed that these “Bactrian emeralds”, as they were known, most likely came from Panjshir Valley. Pilny the Elder would later describe them as “greener than green.” These emeralds were highly prized and valued for their calming and soothing effects in ancient Rome. Nero watched the Roman games in the coliseum through a pair of emerald encrusted glasses.
Panjshir Valley has the potential to become a major hub of emerald mining. Recent studies conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey stated that Afghanistan has mineral reserves worth over one trillion dollars. Although emerald mining in Panjshir Valley dates back to at least 2000 years, it is only recently that the valley is beginning to emerge as an important source of emeralds. Aria Gems is the first and the largest company to legally export emeralds from Panjshir.

در تاریخ ۲۱ سرطان ۱۳۹۷ بر اثر شکستن یکی از حوضهای حوزهء یخچالی کنج، سیلی عظیم پشغور، یکی از دهکده های مربوط به ولسوالی حصهء اول پنجشیر را برد و خسارات جانی و مالی زیادی به اهالی وارد نمود.
در تاریخ ۱۷ اسد ۱۳۹۷/ ۸ آگست ۲۰۱۸ به قصد بازدید از حوض کنج که منشاء سیل اخیر بوده است راهی کوه های مشرف برپشغور شدیم.
کوهنوردی در کوه پشکندا(پسکندا) کمی سخت بود، مخصوصاً برای ما که آمادگی قبلی نداشتیم.
قبل از ما تعدادی از هموطنان برای دیدن این حوضها رفته بودند، گروهی از انجینران وزارت انرژی و آب نیز با رسیدن ما به دامنهء کوه پشکندا کار تهیهء گزارش از حوضها را تکمیل کرده منطقه را ترک نموده بودند.
