The Atom - Wycoller - England
Just a little video on visiting the Wycoller 'Atom'. The Atom is a panopticon situated close to the Haworth Road Car Park above Wycoller in Lancashire.
A panopticon is a structure, space or device providing a comprehensive or panoramic view; in this case, of the beautiful countryside of The Forest of Trawden.
The driving force of this project was ELEAN (East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network) and the Atom is a result of 3 years work by designers Peter Meacock with Katarina Novomestska and Architects WCW.
The music accompanying the video was produced by myself.

A visit on sunday the 27 May 2012 to the beautiful picturesque village of Wycoller in north east Lancashire, near Colne in England. Wycoller Hall was built in Tudor times of the 1600s but fell into disrepair a few centuries later after which its stones were plundered to make other buildings nearby.
The Atom Panopticon in Wycoller Country Park
The Atom is a panopticon situated close to the Haworth Road Car Park above Wycoller country park in Lancashire. But, what actually is a Panopticon? Go on Wikipedia and you might be forgiven for thinking a Panopticon is the famous circular prison invented by the 18th Century pholisopher and social theorist Jeremy Bentham. His idealized prison had all the the inmates living in cells round he outer ring of the prison, so they could all be observed by a single guard in a central inspection house.
However, a bit more investigation will reveal that there are a series of Lancashire Panopticons - each being a creatively-designed structure, space or device which provides a comprehensive or panoramic view. The Lancashire Panopticons scheme (which ran from 2003 to 2007) was a creative project to erect a series of 21st century landmarks across North East Lancashire to symbolise the renaissance of this fabulous part of the world.
The Panopticon chosen for the borough of Pendle is called The Atom and was designed by Peter Meacock and Katrina Novomestska and the Architecture Central Workshop. It is constructed in ferro-cement with a surface coating of metal-based paint.
It is an intriguing and beautiful object which really enhances the landscape and acts as both a viewing point and a shelter. It is situated on the hill above Wycoller village overlooking the beautiful countryside of The Forest of Trawden.
From inside, its circular viewing spaces frame spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, and an initially hidden, polished steel ball reflects back those views to the visitor.
Wycoller, of course, is a historic settlement dating back before 1000BC. It has close links with the Brontes, and Charlotte Bronte is thought to have been a frequent visitor. In 1973 the village was declared a conservation area and the surrounding 350 acres of farmland were designated a Country Park. Wycoller has several unusual architectural features, including seven small bridges that cross Wycoller Beck, and an 18th-century five-aisled barn, now converted into a visitor centre.
There is also an Atom Trail this being a short circular walking trail around the country park. The views are great all along this trail, and you also have the great advantage that you can stop off in Wycoller village to get refreshed at the lovely Tea Room, see Wycoller's collection of ancient bridges, including the Clapper, Clam and Packhorse, and see the Wicker sculptures, and the ruins of Wycoller Hall, which the Brontes made famous. There is a small car park up on the old Haworth road or a larger car park Trawden road. Overall, Wycoller is a great place to visit for the history, the architecture and so the kids can paddle in the river.
With many thanks

A Great days test flying this newly built electrical flying contraption high up and along this wonderful and magical valley. Would of been better without the interference on the video signal, so this will have to do for now !
Pendle Hill can be seen far to the west, standing proud of the otherwise near flat horizon.
The Atom Panopticon used to Have a central Stainless huge ball in the centre on a 2ft pedestal, this got rolled down the hill by people lacking intelligence and has never since been replaced.
The Halo & The Singing Ringing Tree are other works of art in this Lancashire Panopticon Series. Well worth checking out !
