Matheran – A Trek in the Clouds -
Matheran hill station is a popular gateway destination for a lot of people from Mumbai and Pune, the best time to visit here is during monsoon because that’s the time you can witness different flora and fauna and of course the pleasant weather, away from the scorching heat of the city.
Apparently, Matheran has around 38 sightseeing points, for our travel vlog we visited Panorama Point. What I really love about Panorama point is that not many people visit here, which is good because you can enjoy nature quietly and at the same time when you reach the very end of the trail, there is this magnificent 360 Degree view.
One can witness both Sunrise and Sunset from Panorama Point.
Matheran comes under Raigad district in the state of Maharashtra, India.
Standing at the elevation of 2,625 Feet above sea level, it’s the smallest hill station in India, located on the mountain ranges of Western Ghats.
How to Reach Matheran Hill Station:
By Train: Large number of people visiting Matheran prefer to come by train as it is the most convenient mode of transportation, from Mumbai one can board train from a Central Line going to Karjat or Khopoli, after getting down at Neral Station, there are share cabs which can take you to Dasturi Parking Lot, after getting the entry tickets, one has to either walk or take a horse to wherever they would like to go since vehicles are not allowed inside, we prefer walking, it’s a therapy in itself and a great stress buster.
By Road: Matheran is about 90 Kms from Mumbai and 120 Kms from Pune, If you are planning to stay in Matheran for 4 to 5 days or more, a private car is the best option.
By Toy Train: Toy trains are available from Neral Station, however, in the monsoon season, it is closed as a precautionary measure from landslides. It takes Toy train two and half hours to reach Matheran from Neral, it’s a bit of a long trip, but it’s definitely a joy ride.

Matheran was identified by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The British developed Matheran as a popular resort to beat the summer heat in the region. Matheran is birthplace of famous freedom fighter Veer Bhai Kotwal. He was born on 1 December 1912 in a barber family. State Govt. has built a monument in his memory. The Matheran Hill Railway was built in 1907 by Sir Adamjee Peerbhoy and covers a distance of 20 km (12 mi), over large swathes of forest territory. The Matheran hill railway, also known as Matheran Light Railway (MLR), was inspected by UNESCO world heritage site officials but failed to make it to the list as a World Heritage Site. India's other Hill Railways like the Darjeeling Railway, the Kangra Valley Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway are already on the list.
Matheran has been declared an ecosensitive region by the Union Environment Ministry and can be called a Health Sanatorium in itself. A good collection of the dried plants is deposited in Blatter Herbarium, St. Xavier's College, Bombay, Mumbai. The only form of automobile allowed in Matheran is an ambulance operated by the Municipality. No private automobiles are allowed. Within Matheran transport facilities available are horses and hand-pulled rickshaws. Matheran has a huge number of medicinal plants and herbs. The town also has a large monkey population, including bonnet macaques and Hanuman langurs. The nearby Lake Charlotte is the main source of Matheran's drinking water. Inside the forest animals like leopard, barking deer, Malabar giant squirrel, fox, wild boar, mongoose are found. travel tourism trip trek track tracking

It is one of the few places in the world where vehicles are not allowed, which makes the place different from others. Matheran takes you over a hundred years back in time when there were no vehicles. Because of vehicles being banned in Matheran, the place is quite peaceful despite the thousands of visitors coming to visit throughout the year. There are lots of lookout points that provide spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys. It is well connected by rail both, from Mumbai and Pune upto Neral Junction Station, a station at the bottom of the hill. This point is a very beautiful one, for you can see a panoramic view of the hills on the left and a beautiful Ulhas River to the right. This point is too far from Matheran, and only one road leads to it, but you get a good price for your travel.
