Panoramic Adventure Presents: Kilimanjaro - Episode 5
We are making the jump from private touring to full service safari, trekking and travel planning as a business. The big gap between Episode 3 and Episode 4 was in large part due to that decision, but we are back on track and here is episode 5. The relationships we've made in Tanzania just continue to tell us we have made the right choice. Let us help plan your trip through the Northern Circuit of Tanzania or up to the summit of Kilimanjaro. You will not be disappointed.
This series of five, amateur extended videos covers what we called Serengeti Expedition 2016. While the core focus of the trip was a self-drive overlanding and wildlife photography safari, we also trained for a mountain climb to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. This episode is that video of our Kilimanjaro climb. One of our friends experienced a serious back injury before we left for Tanzania, so they were not able to complete their training, nor the actual climb, with us. Alan and Danielle hung back in Arusha and Moshi for five days while we went for Uhuru Peak.
As the team leader and driver of truck 1, I often took a bit of video with my smartphone as the real photographers were at work. The same was the case while we climbed the mountain. The result . . . 5+ hours of many many short videos that would likely only get deleted or take up valuable storage space on my computer. Instead, the short clips are being assembled into actual episodes (with my own variety of very amateur editing) in-between other tasks and events here at home. While the production value may not be that of something you'll find on the NatGeo channel, we hope you enjoy these nonetheless.
Episode 5 covers days 12 through 16 of our overlanding adventure inside Tanzania. We spend this video climbing the Marangu Route through the Mandara Huts, Horombo Huts, Kibo Hut, Gilman's Point, Stella Point and ultimately arrive to the summit of Kibo, Uhuru Peak . . . the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro and the roof of Africa.

Tanzania 2017 - 4K
This short film features some of the best moments, scenery and wildlife uncovered during a two-week, self-drive tour of North-Eastern Tanzania in June 2017.
Touring the area in an anti-clockwise road trip covering 2,500km, we experienced the coast, mountains, rainforest, savannah and saw numerous mammals, reptiles, birds, fish and insects.
Starting in Dar Es Salaam, we drove North along the Indian Ocean, before turning inland and heading North-West towards Arusha. Along the way we stopped off at the Amani Forest Reserve in the East Usambara Mountains, Irente Farm near Lushoto in the West Usambara Mountains, the Kiliman Coffee Plantation in the foothills of Kilimanjaro itself, the Maserani Snake Park outside Arusha before emerging at the Tarangire National Park for the most incredible 24-hours of observing some of Africa's largest and most iconic mammals in their natural habitat.
After this we stayed at the Panorama Safari Campsite on the Rift Valley Escarpment overlooking Lake Manyara National Park, before embarking on a long road trip South to the capital Dodoma, and then East via Morogoro back to Dar Es Salaam.
I'd like to thank all of the extraordinarily friendly campsite hosts, villagers and locals we met during the trip for their hospitality, as well as James Borrell and Jessica Plumb who invited me along on this leg of their sixth-month overlanding tour of Southern Africa.
All footage used in this film was shot on a GoPro Hero 5 Black camera utilising the GoPro Karma Drone and Grip (my first trip with this set-up and I'm delighted with the results!) and edited using Final Cut Pro X.
The soundtrack is 'Re-arrange' by Biffy Clyro, from their 2016 album 'Ellipsis', used according to the following Youtube Music Policy:
I hope you enjoy the film!

Kilimanjaro - Lemosho Route - Day 8
Day 8 of our climb up the Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro - Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate - September 2015.
After waking up refreshed and sore, we did all of the business of tipping the team, packed up and headed to Mweka Gate. Once we got there we signed out (used a real bathroom) and hopped into our vehicle and headed into town.
We went and had burgers and beer and received our certificates for reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro. And so ends our trek!
The Numbers for the day: we starting at 12,556ft / 3,827m and traveled down 11km ending up at 5,358ft / 1,633m

The summit and approaches to Africa’s highest peak are overwhelmed by thousands of people, threatening its ecological balance. Over 50,000 foreign tourists climb Mount Kilimanjaro every year, accompanied by a support staff exceeding 200,000 people. As the number of visitors grows each year, mountain facilities are increasingly strained. The Park is looking for solutions.

7 Climb Kilimanjaro via Lemosho Route
The Lemosho route is considered the most scenic trail on Kilimanjaro, granting panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain. As one of the newer routes, Lemosho is a superb choice for your climb. It is our preferred route due to its ideal balance of low crowds, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. Topi Adventure specializes in guiding on the Lemosho route. Most of our clients climb Kilimanjaro using this route and they consistently report that they loved it. Thus, Lemosho is highly recommended. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. From there, the first two days are spent trekking through the rain forest to Shira Ridge. The Lemosho route crosses the entire Shira Plateau from west to east in a pleasant, relatively flat hike. Crowds are low until the route joins the Machame route near Lava Tower. Then the route traverses underneath Kilimanjaro's Southern Ice Field on a path known as the Southern Circuit before summiting from Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route. Topi Adventure offers Lemosho as an eight day group climb or as a seven to eight day private climb. The seven day variation combines days five and six, going from Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp without staying at Karanga. A nine day variation that includes an overnight at Crater Camp is available as a private climb by special request.

About Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is actually a dormant volcano (don’t worry, its last major eruption was more than 360,000 years ago!) and is the highest mountain in Africa. You will find the highest free standing mountain in the world in the Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania (‘free standing’ meaning it is not part of a mountain range). It is made up of three volcanos; Shira, Mawnzi and Kibo. The Uhuru summit, located on the Kibo volcano, is the second closest point on the earth to the sun.
There are seven established routes to climb Kilimanjaro, and each route varies in length, difficulty and scenery
Our carefully planned Kilimanjaro itinerary uses the Lemosho route. This is the newest route up the mountain and is favoured because of its beauty, remoteness and success rate. Think beautiful scenery, panoramic vistas, remote landscapes and varied terrain. The route has a great acclimatisation profile; featuring repeated ‘climb high sleep low’ opportunities, maximising the chances that our clients reach the summit and have an amazing overall experience.
