Discover Rapa Nui, Easter Island - Chile
Few places in the world have a more magical appeal than this tiny speck of land, which also happens to be one of the most isolated places on Earth. Situated just over 3700km to the east of Chile, the island is set aside from the rest of the world and is home to the most surreal statues in the world. The stone figures are an icon of the island and add to the mysterious and magical vibe that reverberates through its land.
Go diving, snorkeling and surfing or if you fancy keeping your feet dry then head off on bike, saddle or on horseback and explore the islands hidden secrets. If the relaxing is your priority, then the superb expanses of white sand should take care of all your needs.

Puna Pau on Easter Island
Puna Pau which is the topknot quarry where the red scoria was extracted, carved and transported. There are a number of abandoned topknots around the quarry and some even have petroglyphs carved into them.
Pukao are the hats or topknots formerly placed on top of some moai statues on Easter Island. They were all carved from a very light red volcanic stone scoria, which was quarried from a single source at Puna Pau.
Pukao are cylindrical in shape with a dent on the underside to fit on the head of the moai and a boss or knot on top. They fitted onto the moai in such a way that the pukao protruded forwards. Their size varies in proportion to the moai they were on but they can be up to 8 feet tall and 8 feet in diameter.
The pukao was balanced as a separate piece on top of the head of a moai. It is not known how they were raised and placed but theories include them being raised with the statue or placed after the statue was erected. Pukao may have represented dressed hair or headdresses of red feathers worn by chiefs throughout Polynesia.
To date, about 100 pukao have been documented archaeologically, but only at Ahu with fallen statues or at the source quarry

Tour Easter Island: Moai, Petroglyphs and a Meteorite
The entire island is basically one huge archaeological sight and the highlights are divided into the Western Circuit and the Southeastern Circuit. The major sites line the southeastern coast and include: Tongariki, and Rano Rarku Quarry.
Ahu Tongariki has 15 moai, standing side-by-side on a 200-foot long Ahu - the longest ever made. Destroyed by a massive Tsunami in 1960, the moai have been painstakingly restored. From there, the tour continued to Papa Vaka where the largest remaining petroglyphs are slowly eroding. It was very difficult to film, or see, them in a blinding sun.
Last sight of the day was a perfectly round stone that is now thought to be a meteorite. Weighing 1-1/2 TONS, it was brought as ballast in one of their canoes ... can you imagine?
EASTER ISLAND, EXPLORING the volcanic site of PUNA PAU, the origin of the the red MOAI (statues) ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go the mysterious island of Easter Island in the Pacific Ocean and let's visit Puna Pau which is a quarry in a small crater or cinder cone on the outskirts of Hanga Roa in the south west of the Island.
Puna Pau was the sole source of the red scoria that the Rapa Nui people used to carve the pukao (topknots) that they put on the heads of some of their iconic moai statues. The stone from Puna Pau was also used for a few non-standard moai including Tukuturi and also for some petroglyphs.
Easter Island, a Chilean territory, is a remote volcanic island in Polynesia. Its native name is Rapa Nui. It’s famed for archaeological sites, including nearly 900 monumental statues called moai, created by inhabitants during the 13th–16th centuries. The moai are carved human figures with oversize heads, often resting on massive stone pedestals called ahus. Ahu Tongariki has the largest group of upright moai.

Easter Island - Day Six
19th June 2018 - The last full day in Easter Island. Back to Anakena beach. We had breakfast there and took some shots of the Moai on this sacred location. Walking towards Papa Vaka where we left off from the second day we continued up the Poike Volcano where we risked the strong rains and wild cows to find ourselves on a red surface volcanic edge. After a quick lunch we headed on to Ahu Tongariki to camp out and take pictures of the Moai under the starlight. A great trek through what felt like a collection of environments all wrapped up into one island. Amazing view of Ahu Tongariki from the top of the volcano and the change of landscape was quite impressive.

Mama Lola, Matriarch of Rapa Nui, Easter Island; 1925 - 2017
John Kahn has written this memorial which we received today:
To all my family .The matriarch of the RAPU clan has gathered up her ninety two years and taken her last breath here ......on Rapa Nui. ANA LOLA TUKI CHAVEZ leaves behind in excess of ninety descendants including great great grand kids! More than sixty live here on the island in a stonesthrow proximity, so the clan evolved around MAMA, who was bed ridden for the last eight years. She lived right next door to Anita and I , so we would keep regular company, and for this I am forever grateful as she shared so many interesting stories with us. The times of Ana Lola are truly unique as she was a major part in the preparation of her people for the world intervening on her fragile culture. Mama was known as the mother of the poor along with taking care of half the islands inhabitants she worked the lepresary, cleaned the hospital , assisted Thor Heyerdahl ,Kitin Munio, as well as Kevin Reynolds. She was a friend to all dignitaries who came to the island including PInochet! Her concerns were never for herself, always for the less fortunate, she prayed for everyone and everything .....day and night.......,candles ever burning , like her smile.

Neat magnetic rock that, similar to everything else on the island, is somewhat of a mystery in origin. If you watch the needle on the compass, you'll see it go haywire on the rock.
